BREAKING NEWS IN S.C. JUDICIAL BRANCH POWER STRUGGLE

The race for chief justice of the S.C. Supreme Court took a bizarre turn this week when its top candidate abruptly bowed out.

John W. Kittredge, elected to the court in 2008, reportedly notified legislative leaders of his intention to remove his name from consideration late Friday.   That means liberal justice Donald Beatty is currently unopposed in the race to replace current chief justice Costa Pleicones, whose term expires at the end of the year.
