The race for the Republican nomination in South Carolina’s competitive first congressional district is getting crowded.
What looked like it might be a two-woman contest has officially drawn six challengers – and another prospective entrant could be just days away from declaring his intentions.
Will it matter in a district that seems to be trending toward Democrats? That remains to be seen, but the GOP is clearly going to have a fight on its hands as it picks a nominee for the district representing its top national target.
According to our sources, a physician in Mount Pleasant, S.C. named Sam McCown (below) is doing his “due diligence” on a possible first district congressional bid – meeting with Republican activists and elected officials in the Lowcountry to hear their thoughts on the current GOP field.

What are those thoughts? That there is no clear frontrunner for the nomination – and that national Republicans view the battle for their party’s nomination as wide open.
Is that true? Eh … we would argue incumbent Democrat Joe Cunningham probably considers state representative Nancy Mace to be his top challenger, but Mount Pleasant town councilwoman Kathy Landing has been successful on the fundraising front – and appears poised to give Mace a run for her money.
Landing (below) is also working hard on the campaign trail – picking up significant support in the GOP stronghold of Beaufort County, local sources tell us.

Beaufort county councilman Michael Covert, “Bikers for Trump” activist Chris Cox of Mount Pleasant and school teacher Logan Cunningham of Bluffton, S.C. are also running, but so far their campaigns have yet to establish any real momentum.
Will McCown join this field? And if so, would he be a credible candidate?
“Very credible,” one GOP elected official who recently met with the physician told us, although they declined to speculate as to whether he would enter the race.
We have no insight as to McCown’s thinking … but the GOP race for this seat does have a decidedly open feel to it. And if McCown is able to compete with Mace and Landing on the fundraising front, anything can happen.
Stay tuned … we will keep our eyes peeled in the event McCown or any other would-be candidates decide to jump into this contest.
