Two-and-a-half months after releasing its 2016 data, the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has released violent crime statistics for 2017 – the most recent year for which data is available.
According to the statewide law enforcement agency, rates for overall violent crimes in the Palmetto State “dropped slightly” in 2017 while property crimes “also dropped when compared to 2016.”
SLED’s annual uniform crime report showed a 0.8 percent decrease in violent crime – including a 5.9 percent dip in robberies – however the state’s murder rate ticked up by 1.7 percent. Meanwhile, domestic violence assaults declined by 3 percent and property crimes declined by 2.6 percent.
In 2016, overall violent crimes climbed by 1.5 percent.
“The crime rates are based on crimes per 10,000 residents of our fast growing state,” SLED chief Mark Keel said in a statement. “While the overall rates for both violent and property crimes decreased, what is troubling are increases in the number of murders, sexual battery, aggravated assaults and law enforcement officers assaulted in the state during 2017.”
