Catherine Templeton will bring her surprisingly competitive gubernatorial campaign to South Carolina’s state capital next week.
The 47-year-old Lowcountry labor attorney – who is giving incumbent “Republican” governor Henry McMaster a run for his money ahead of this spring’s vote – will address the First Tuesday Republican Club of the Midlands this coming Tuesday.
A two-time appointee of former S.C. governor Nikki Haley, Templeton has turned the 2018 race on its ear – turning what should have been a coronation for the 70-year-old McMaster into a pitched battle for the GOP gubernatorial nod.
Of course much of Templeton’s momentum can be attributed to McMaster’s multiple missteps …
Anyway, as this group’s name suggests, its monthly gathering will be held on Tuesday, February 6 at the The Hall at Senate’s End (300 Senate Street – Columbia, S.C. 29201). Doors open at 11:30 a.m. EDT for a media availability with Templeton, with a lunch program beginning at noon and the candidate’s remarks scheduled to begin shortly thereafter.

[/timed-content-server]Templeton will be the third of four announced GOP gubernatorial candidates to address the group, as current lieutenant governor Kevin Bryant and former lieutenant governor Yancey McGill made appearances last fall.
What about McMaster?
“We are currently working with Governor Henry McMaster’s office to schedule his appearance later this spring,” club president Dino Teppera wrote in announcing Templeton’s appearance.
Hmmm …
McMaster has already failed to appear at the only scheduled forum for the candidates, prompting additional speculation regarding his health.
Next in line to address this group? Embattled S.C. attorney general Alan Wilson, who like McMaster is hoping to overcome his proximity to an ongoing anti-corruption investigation to win the GOP nomination for his office in June.
Wilson will appear before the club’s members on March 6, Teppera announced.
