The South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (SCDJJ) relocated dozens of its juvenile inmates this week as “a safety precaution” related to Hurricane Irma.
According to a news release from the agency, a convoy of vans, buses and SCDJJ public safety vehicles left early Friday morning to bring “juveniles to sites preselected to best protect (them) during the storm and possible flooding.”
“I am proud of our staff and juveniles as we were able to safely, quickly and without incident become better prepared for this potential upcoming storm,” said Freddie Pough, acting director of the agency.
Pough has been leading SCDJJ on an interim basis ever since the agency’s former director, Sylvia Murray, was forced to resign in late January. Murray stepped down less than 24 hours after the S.C. Legislative Audit Council (SCLAC) released a scathing report detailing various security and financial issues at the agency.

Is Pough doing a good job on an interim basis? We don’t know … although the agency has certainly stopped the bleeding when it comes to negative press. In fact, SCDJJ has done a remarkable job of accentuating its positives lately.
