REPORT: S.C. GOVERNOR UNDER CONSIDERATION FOR TOP CABINET APPOINTMENT …
In keeping with the “Keep Your Friends Close and Your Republicans Closer,” U.S. president-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering S.C. governor Nikki Haley as a candidate for secretary of state.
That’s according to a tweet from MSNBC host Joe Scarborough.
“Trump has spent the past several days reaching out to political figures who opposed him in the Republican primary to fill major positions,” Scarborough tweeted shortly after floating the Haley speculation.
Appointing Haley to arguably the most important position in his cabinet would be “brilliant for Trump,” one top Palmetto political advisor told us.
Really?
Hmmm …
Haley spent months attacking Trump during the GOP primary election, and was decidedly cool towards him during the general election (selfishly so, we’d like to add).
It remains to be seen whether Scarborough’s sources are reliable, but he is absolutely correct when he says that Trump is making overtures to the GOP establishment that mere weeks ago was still attempting to cut him off at the knees.
Hell, arguably the most important post in the new White House went to the chairman of the Republican National Committee, Reince Priebus.
There’s also another angle to consider here …
If Trump were to appoint Haley to a cabinet post, he would clear a path for S.C. lieutenant governor Henry McMaster to ascend to the office he covets – the governorship of South Carolina.
Not only that, McMaster – one of Trump’s most influential Palmetto State supporters – would have the power of incumbency on his side in the upcoming 2018 campaign for this office.
“This is a sop to Henry,” one Palmetto political observer told us, noting McMaster’s recent comments about eschewing a Washington, D.C. job in favor of running for governor in 2018.
