WITH YOUR MONEY …

A day after three bureaucrats at the S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) were indicted on corruption charges, there’s another scandal involving the misappropriation of infrastructure resources in the Palmetto State.

According to reporter Larry Hilliard of The Gaffney Ledger, more than $50,000 in taxpayer money was spent to turn a “nearly half-mile-long private, no-name, gated, dead-end, dirt and gravel road in Blacksburg, S.C.” into a “freshly paved public road.”

In addition to being paved, the road was rechristened “Big Rock Road.”

Here’s a look at the area via Google Earth …

The only state lawmaker currently living in Blacksburg, S.C. is liberal “Republican” Stephen V. Moss – who was among those voting to raise your gas taxes last year.

Moss listed 104 Rains Road as his home address in the most recent print edition of the S.C. General Assembly’s legislative manual, although the updated online version of his legislative biography lists 210 Big Rock Road as his home address.  The Rains Road address is consistent with the location and description of the paved road discussed in The Gaffney Ledger report.

This website has been writing extensively in recent weeks about the culture of corruption that exists with regard to infrastructure funding in South Carolina.  This culture continues to put taxpayers in untenable positions (even as their government pushes non-essential projects and complains about its funding).

For those of you keeping score at home, SCDOT has seen its base budget more than double over the last six years – and lawmakers approved a constitutionally-dubious borrowing scheme on top of that this year.
