GOVERNOR CONSIDERING WHETHER TO CALL ON ATTORNEY GENERAL TO STEP DOWN

Earlier this week we did a post discussing how the ongoing scandal enveloping S.C. attorney general Alan Wilson could wind up hurting governor Nikki Haley.

That’s right … even though Haley has taken the right position on the issue, it could still create political headaches because most people in the Palmetto State are ignorant of how their government works and believe Haley has some measure of control over Wilson, a fellow “Republican.”

Apparently Haley sees the potential for problems, too, and has been holding high-level meetings regarding her next steps related to the scandal.

Among the options?  Echoing our call for Wilson to resign his office.

“It’s on the table,” a source close to Haley’s office told us.

Wait … what?

Political operatives said Haley calling for Wilson’s resignation would be smart politics.

“It resolves her perception problem and showcases that independent streak she’s got going on,” one told us.

So far Haley has merely backed the decision of her top law enforcement official – S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) chief Mark Keel – to pursue the empaneling of a grand jury in the corruption case Wilson is attempting to obstruct.

She’s also recently referred to Wilson’s scandal as an “embarrassing mess,” although so far she has declined to weigh in on the merits of the case.
