MLK’s stated goals were admirable, regardless of whether or not his personal morals were. There was so much hate against him that it is nearly impossible to weed the fiction from the facts.

My understanding is that MLK was working on a “basic income guarantee” policy for government, which personally I find deplorable-

But MLK, like most of us, was a complex individual trying to rectify the injustices of slavery while at the same time operating under a paradigm in which the same government that was partially responsible for crimes against blacks would ultimately somehow be the black man’s savior-

It’s a fool hardy notion, but MLK was a voice of hope that the black community needed even if at times he was off base/wrong.

The fact he was spied on by the FBI(and possibly threatened by them) shows that he couldn’t be all bad.

“I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” – Martin Luther King, Jr

That is to me the best quote of his lifetime. We need that still to this day, as our disappointing POTUS is first to defend color and ignore content of character, the Dr’s quote works both ways. We will always struggle until we can look only at good men or bad, and leave color out.

Taz….Brings up color when talking about leaving color out.
You can’t help but be a racist, can you?

Reading? I do it just fine. Being hopelessly racist? You did it just fine.

No, you show tremendous ignorance about the man. You don’t come here much, do you?
That’s okay. It’s really probably a good thing that you don’t.

Thanks for providing more proof. You guys just can’t help it. You’ve been racist for so long you can’t even see it. It ‘colors’ everything you say or do.

I don’t think knowing more about me personally would make him less of a race baiter, it is what losers do when their arguments are weak.

True that, Taz!

The military is a good option for everyone. It transformed me from a wide eyed kid to conservative. I wasn’t racist or from SC at the time. Although I didn’t find the military life to my liking it was a great education.

Mark January 18, 2016 at 5:16 pm

Of course I think Dr. King would see the editor of this site for what he is; someone who points out people’s race whenever he thinks it will benefit his position and ignores when he does not. Whether he is a true racist, or someone like Lee Atwater who uses the racism of others for political gain, is unclear, but in that regard pointing out Mr. Quinn’s hypocrisy is the pot calling the kettle black, literally. Maybe one day SC will evolve to the point a minority’s race cannot be used against him or her, but we are not there yet. The southern strategy is still alive and well in this state; and this site and the Republican party use it very efficiently.

Today I read some of the hate mail Dr. King received when he was alive. Identical to a lot of what I read on the internet or is dog whistled by RW media & politicians today…down to complaining about his Nobel Peace Prize.

Well said, Mark. There is no question that Will Folks is a racist bigot. He tries to come across as otherwise but his articles and views say otherwise. Will panders to the lowest life form who routinely (hourly/daily) troll this site.

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’

We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.

“Whenever the government provides opportunities and privileges for white people and rich people they call it ‘subsidies.’ When they do it for Negro and poor people they call it ‘welfare.’ The fact is that everybody in this country lives on welfare. Suburbia was built with federally subsidized credit. And highways that take our white brothers out to the suburbs were built with federally subsidized money to the tune of ninety percent. Everybody is on welfare in this country. The problem is that we all too often have socialism for the rich and rugged free enterprise capitalism for the poor. That’s the problem.”

MLK Jr.

If he were alive today, he might add ‘ and incentives’ after the word ‘subsidies’

There have been a few comments about the racist “Southern Strategy” and bigoted South Carolina. A look at the statistics reveal that racism isn’t just a Southern thing. I have also noticed southern civil rights leaders like Dr. King exhibited more faithful allegiance to non violence and Christian principles than their Northern counterparts. I believe this also lead to the following statistical differences between the North and South.

Often people change, and hopefully for the better. For instance, Fits tells us he used to be a drunk and a drug addict, now he’s changed, no longer an addict and is an upstanding, responsible businessman toiling away, working hard, raising a family. Quinn used to be a racist bastard, now he’s only mildly bigoted. Meanwhile, little Ricky Quinn runs around with Ed Givens, someone far more militant than MLK. Maybe little Ricky (by age not girth) will someday see the error of his ways too.

Bible Thumper January 19, 2016 at 10:11 am

Rick Quinn got closer to Nikki Haley at the Confederate Flag bill signing ceremony than Will Folks ever did.

Back when Sic was a drunk, I frequently saw he, Trikki, Ricky, and often others imbibing in the Points, and Vista. Sic was usually at least that close to her in plain view, what else transpired I don’t know. When Trikki was a lowly House member, they were all thick as thieves.

MLK was your classical Uncle Tom. His legacy has legitimized the likes of Jim Clyburn, I.S. Leevy Johnson, Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, Armstrong Williams, etc. Malcolm X was the true messiah for Black folks.
