THE LATEST FROM RICHLAND COUNTY …

A student at Spring Valley High School who took one of the eyewitness videos of this week’s violent arrest of a black female student by a white male police officer is … defending the deputy?

The anonymous student told local television station WLTX TV 19 (CBS – Columbia, S.C.) that the school’s resource officer – Richland County senior deputy Ben Fields – was just “trying to do his job” during the graphic incident, which has drawn more negative national attention to the Palmetto State.

Cell phone videos taken Monday by students at Spring Valley High School showed Fields grabbing the female student, flipping her out of her chair and dragging her across the floor as other students sat in stunned silence.

Yet according to the student’s interview with WLTX, the cell phone cameras – including his own camera – didn’t capture the whole story.

“I honestly think that it was a two way thing and the officer was wrong, but also the girl was wrong,” the student told WLTX’s Loren Thomas.

The student added that he “wanted to at least take some of the pressure off of (Fields).”

“I’m shocked that something like this happened with students disrespecting elders and law enforcement,” the student told Thomas.  “They are a higher power, the least you could do is respect them and follow orders.”

As we originally reported, the dispute began when the female student refused to put away her cell phone.

Fields – who was previously honored by Richland County School District Two as an “exceptional role model” – has been banned from setting foot on district property pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident.

The student who spoke up in class to ask the teachers to stop Deputy Slam, was on MSNBC last night. The Slam name is what she stated students at SVHS call Fields. Nothing could be more telling.

Hmmm, and the narrative begins to unravel. Next you’re going to learn some troubling things about the YLIQ that might help to explain why the incident went down like it did.

Bottom Line – the YLIQ caused the event.

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 10:29 am

The girl did not cause Deputy Slam to act like an unprofessional jack booted thug. There were SO many ways he could have properly arrested her. What he did was not based on any LE training at all.

Reply
Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 10:32 am

It’s actually almost exactly what LE training is for dealing with those refusing to comply and resisting. I guess the cop should have just walked away, huh?

Reply
Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 10:35 am

You people have only two settings, all or nothing at all. Proper LE training in that scenario of “dead weight” would be to place pressure points on the girl to make her stand, handcuff her to the desk until she agreed to leave, move the desk with her in it out of the room, even telling her to move or he would tase her would have been in line with LE training-not grabbing her by her arm, then her throat and slamming her and desk to the ground. Then flinging her to the front of the room. Geez!

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 10:40 am

Yes, I prefer all and, in this case, nothing would have been done at all except what was done. That doesn’t mean the toss wasn’t a little over the top, but that’s only a minor technical issue with the whole situation. Pressure points would be nice if they were always effective but they’re not and you don’t want to use something ineffective in that classroom because there is little room for things to get out of control. Handcuffing her to the desk until she agrees to leave? OK, maybe, but that doesn’t accomplish what was always asked (to get the student to leave). I think you’re parsing this too much and trying too hard to find something wrong that therefore makes everything the cop did wrong.

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 10:41 am

I think you are parsing this too much, to make everything the 16 year old GIRL’s fault. We will agree to disagree.

nitrat October 28, 2015 at 10:50 am

This is not happening on a street corner. It’s in a school classroom.
You don’t seem to think that calls for a different approach.
And, since we now know the SC LE SRO programs are not members of the National SRO Association and don’t get their specialized training, our SROs might not know the difference either.
You don’t traumatize a class full of kids because one of them won’t put up her cell phone.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 11:02 am

I don’t know if it calls for a different approach or not. Give me a somewhat reasonable solution that is better. For the most part, in dealing with situations like this, it’s to come up with a reasonable solution to diffuse the situation when you literally have someone that won’t budge and is a possible ticking time bomb. If you want to debate the policies or the training of SROs then that’s fine, but those questions don’t detract from the fact that this whole thing is an overblown media feeding frenzy. That’s my only point. We can hack this up to pieces and try to come up with something better, but just because it wasn’t perfect doesn’t mean we need to crucify the guy and absolve this girl. I don’t know that there was any way to not traumatize the class of kids. That was up to the girl. She didn’t want to not be a menace. She wanted to play a stupid and she won a stupid prize.

blueyescrying October 28, 2015 at 11:26 am

Honestly those kids didn’t look traumatized at all. It looked as if they were used to this kind of behavior which they probably are. And you are correct, this is a school not a street corner. Therefore the students should know how to behave in a learning environment by not pulling out phones and showing respect to the adults/authority figures. If the students would behave better we wouldn’t need officers in the school to police the students as they would police a street corner.

today's youngins October 28, 2015 at 11:39 am

Why do they have phones in the classrooms anyway? Previous generations got along just fine without them at school.

Denozitall October 29, 2015 at 6:25 am

Yes, lets stop a whole class to cater to one probably A+ student who was probably just having her period and needed a group hug that day. The whole class should have stopped to do a trust exercise so she could have fallen backwards into their arms to feel supported and loved because the whole class was really just about her needs. Then, the teacher could have gone around the room to ask each student how they were feeling and how this situation made them fell that day using “I feel” statements. For God’s sake. No wonder people want to homeschooling their kids.

Fecal Matters October 28, 2015 at 10:59 am

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 10:36 am

I’d challeneg anyone to try to force someone else to stand up in similar conditions. I was never a cop but as part of basic training a billion years ago we had “riot control training” Dealing with a standing person is fairly simple and there are a number of techniques you can use to subdue them. Dealing with someone lying down is also fairly simple for the same reasons once you control an arm – dealing with “sit ins” was by far the most difficult technique to learn because of all the things that can go wrong.

stumpknocker October 28, 2015 at 10:39 am

yeah like police brutality caught on film, that is why they are so effective, a point gets made and no one is hurt.

nitrat October 28, 2015 at 10:55 am

“I’d challeneg anyone to try to force someone else to stand up in similar conditions. ”
That’s why everything about this was a bad idea. It was simply not a rational, thought out way by teacher, administrator or cop to resolve the problem.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 10:59 am

One of the tings I’ve learned in the last thirty or so years is “you fight the battle you’re given, not the one you’d like to fight”.

Today, I’m sure the sane amongst us could come up with 3-4 excellent ways to deescalate the situation and handle it differently. In the classroom that day after numerous attempts to force the YLIQ into compliance with multiple directives to leave the classroom Deputy Fields fought the battle he was handed.

Rocky Verdad October 28, 2015 at 11:05 am

And thus the sane next step is to review policies, determine if they need to be revised, and move forward. The past deals with itself, using with the help of lawyers and E&O / LIability insurance.

flip October 28, 2015 at 11:07 am

All you liberals want to do is protect criminals and illegals (same).

Rocky Verdad October 28, 2015 at 11:18 am

Si, mi amigo.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 11:12 am

Yeah, Ol’Leon said something about “reviewing policies” and “how he didn’t write that law” while he was shoving his deputy under the bus.

The truth is that there is a state law that prohibits disrupting a classroom (any classroom, colleges included). The YLIQ was trespassing from the moment she was told to leave the classroom.

And with that note, my conference call has ended and y’all are on your own…

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 11:50 am

Let’s say I agree with everything you said. What we see in that video, does she deserve that? Why is that not excessive and warranting of some kind of punishment of the deputy. Sure, punish her too i.e. expulsion or disturbing school charge. Why is her offense the ONLY thing that matters and not how the trained professional should have handled it.

nitrat October 28, 2015 at 11:06 am

The adults were not thinking any more clearly than the kid.
That’s an issue they need to think about and get better before the next time if they want the kids to respect them.
And, respect is something that is earned.

blueyescrying October 28, 2015 at 11:23 am

Respect is also something that is taught, which apparently this student never learned, otherwise she would have shown respect by: 1. not pulling out a cell phone during class; 2. putting the cell phone away when asked to do so or 3. leaving the premises when asked the first time. If she had done any of those three things none of this would have happened in the first place. There is a cause and effect in every situation.

today's youngins October 28, 2015 at 11:34 am

What happened to calling the parents when kids refused to obey? And telling them to come down and straighten out your kid. Do they skip that step in today’s schools? Throw that back in their court to discipline. When I was young I’d rather faced the wrath of the principal than my dad.

CorruptionInColumbia October 28, 2015 at 2:10 pm

What good when the “parent” will likely uphold snd support their undisciplined brat? The parent is likely the root cause of this problem.

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 2:52 pm

No her parents didn’t cause the SRO to use excessive force.
Out of control violent cops are the problem.
Who will you try to blame next? You guys are running out of people and things.

Rocky Verdad October 28, 2015 at 10:59 am

Didn’t we agree yesterday he should have just pulled the chair / desk out of the room with Tequanna in it? That she’d probably then have gotten out. I saw some BFF of the “victim” on CNN last night all lawyered up. Let’s just say we’ll revise the procedures, the officer is free to return, and Tequanna and her Mom and Dad get a check for a new Crown Vic.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 11:01 am

Yes, the “desk pull” technique had near universal approval.

By the way, in order to remain PC, I am now referring to the “Young Lady” In Question as the YLIQ – pronounced “why lick”.

Rocky Verdad October 28, 2015 at 11:04 am

Oh, I thought it stood for Yo Liquid.
They should get the upgrade on the used Crown Vic with the leather seats.

The national media was all over it last night, but Donald and crew will send this story to the bottom of the well. I’m more offended by the kid getting shot for 10 grams of weed.

And for every poor decision in LE, we never seed the thousdans of good decisions. Like how they arrested Dalyn in NC. I’d say the incident rate for conflict in LE encounters remains extremely low.

lawyered October 28, 2015 at 11:14 am

They’re looking for more than a Crown Vic. They have lawyered up with Todd Rutherford and on GMA he had this to say-

“She now has a cast on her arm, she has neck and back injuries. She has a Band-Aid on her forehead where she suffered rug burn on her forehead,” Rutherford told the network.

Rocky Verdad October 28, 2015 at 11:17 am

Weak. They should have put a cast on her leg too.

Meh, we’ve been in a downward trend for thirty years. Bush had an unusual spike in his first year (72 killed in one day on 9/11) and Obama had an unusually low number in his 5th year. Take a look at it graphically: http://s22.postimg.org/55q8bokog/LEO_Deaths.jpg

Well, we know Deputy Fields is not being held back by the so-called Ferguson Effect.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 10:33 am

I’ve got to partially agree with you there Nitrat. It seems to me that educators and administrators have lost ability to control their students. My school in suburban Atlanta had 1,200 or so and no police officers. We did have a giant for an Assistant Principal (who was in charge of discipline) and a bunch of coaches who got involved when necessary.

As for the flipping over backwards, her attempt to kick out combined with Deputy Fields attempt to stand her up resulted in the back flip.

Reply
nitrat October 28, 2015 at 10:37 am

One of the 2 videos I saw yesterday clearly showed the cop grabbing her left leg, bringing it up to the bottom of the desktop and use that as the leverage to overturn the desk. The other video angle did not. In the first video, he kept hold of the left pants leg after the desk overturned and had it in his hand when he threw/slid her to the front of the class, as he can be seen ‘shaking out’ his arms to walk up front and cuff her.

Reply
The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 10:41 am

Watch her other leg, she is flailing arms and legs the entire time.

What would have happened had she complied with any one of the four orders he gave her to “stand up”? You can clearly hear him telling her to stand up in a non threatening manner four separate times, then he calmly tells her that he is going to stand her up.

nitrat October 28, 2015 at 10:45 am

I imagine she’s trying to get her feet on the ground because she can feel what he’s doing and knows her head will be hitting the floor shortly.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 11:15 am

And yet, even without “proper technique” no injuries, sounds like he must have done something right (or got real lucky..)

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 11:12 am

What would have happened if Fields would have used proper LE technique to remove her, as I described in an earlier post on this thread. Why is everyone completely blaming a 16 year old girl. Why doesn’t the LE trained adult professional, who has been a SRO for several years, not at least share in the blame for this totally escalated incident that started because of a cell phone.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 11:14 am

According to a number of officers who have reviewed the video, he did.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 11:19 am

I think you are just arguing something different. Most are not arguing that there couldn’t possibly could have been something different done, but the immediate jump to crucify the cop and absolve the girl kind of flipped the script. It’s all about the narrative, not necessarily about the technicalities and you are trying to argue the technicalities. Whether or not the officer followed proper procedure and training is up for debate. I have heard from different officers varying opinions, but none have said he was completely out of line and rogue in what he did. This was not police brutality and the girl absolutely had every opportunity in the book to keep this from escalating the way that it did. She didn’t want to go that route. That’s really the only point. All the other arguments are just noise, whether someone wants the officer burned at the stake or the girl burned at the stake. Those people just have their presumptions and are staking their claim on one side of the other. I think it’s pretty clear, however, that this is not a big story the way it has been made out to be.

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 11:44 am

Every officer I have talked to says Fields was out of line and force was excessive for situation. The girl having every opportunity to comply is not the ONLY point. The point for Lott and Solicitor Johnson, is whether the force in that situation was excessive or not. The girl’s compliance is relevant only to know if the force used to make her compliant was appropriate. The girl being dead weight as I described earlier would not warrant the force Fields used.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 11:51 am

Ok, let’s put aside the technicality regarding “appropriateness” and “excessive”. Do you really think that what the officer did was all that bad? Not asking whether it COULD have been done differently, but whether you think it was really that big of a deal considering the circumstances.

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 11:55 am

Yes, I do. I appreciate your civil comment. The matter involved her not putting away her phone and not leaving the class because of that. To grab her by the arm, and her throat to lift her and then thrown her down. Then that fling to the front of the class. Yes, honestly it was a big deal for the circumstances. She was not being violent at all, she was not yelling or cussing or acting wildly. She was dead weight at her desk. A phone “issue” does not deserve that.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 12:07 pm

I’ve seen you say “deserve” several times. To me, it’s not about what the girl deserved or didn’t deserve. I think it’s irrelevant and unfair to frame it that way. It simply boils down to whether or not her rights were violated in any way. I don’t see how that can be argued and yes, her actions do have to be taken into consideration to determine that. Her actions are not irrelevant. While I understand your thoughts that we are taking the actions of the officer lightly, it seems like you are taking the girl’s lightly. It was not just about her phone, it was about the totality of behavior and her refusal to abide simple orders of those in authority over her at a place of public education. For a 17 year old senior, nothing should even have to be escalated in the manner it was. Also, I don’t see dead weight, nor do I see an intentional grabbing of the throat by the cop. The fling may be over the top, but again, that’s just a minor issue with the whole incident. You can’t say she was not being violent. She was determined to stand her ground and even tried to hit the officer’s face. That may very well have been a natural reaction to being toppled over, but that’s another reason she should have complied to begin with. We’re never going to know if it was just reactionary or not because she was in the wrong to begin with and therefore it’s impossible to assess motives within the scuffle.

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 12:25 pm

The word deserve is appropriate and I did not say her actions were irrelevant. The amount of force used is based on what the person is or is not doing. If she is not doing anything, once again, dead weight-then what she should get is not a WWF wrestling attack. I am not taking the girl’s action or inaction lightly. I have said repeatedly that she should be expelled and I have no problem with the disturbing school charge. The totality of the situation as you reference, includes the one thing you do think was inappropriate i.e. the fling. SO she gets punished as she should AND so does Fields for his inappropriate action which I believe was the ENTIRE way he engaged her not just the fling. He absolutely did not follow LE training or protocol for that situation.

It does not matter if his girlfriend is as back and beautiful as Lupita Nyongo. Blacks can be prejudiced against each other and convey stereotypes to each other. Certainly, a white guy who may date black women could see his girlfriend as the “exception” and still convey biases toward other blacks. Bottom line, regardless of his girlfriend’s race, he would have never physically engaged a white teen girl in that way. Period. The point is how he executes his public duties in a predominantly black school, regardless of who he dates.

If anyone is a racist, it is you for assuming that it “must be racism” simply based on the color of the people involved and nothing else.

Are you trying to say that he would have “never” physically engaged a white girl because a white girl would “never” have acted in such an outrageously stupid manner toward authorities who were making reasonable requests or demands of her?

If so, I disagree. Whites have their share of total idiots among their ranks, too. The deceased drug dealer in the Upstate is an example of duch, whether or not you agree with the officer’s actions. Unfortunately, this type of behavior seems to be encouraged, even lauded, in some segments of Black community and culture, which may explain the disproportionate number of Black children who are suspended or expelled.

Reply
Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 11:29 am

Bullshit. Black children are taught from a young age to comply, obey and do whatever is needed to not be killed by cops. It is the infamous “talk’ that black parents have with their children about LE regularly. Other than members of a rap group, not one black kid, young or old adult thinks that behaving badly in the presence of LE is a good idea. Black children are suspended/expelled at a higher rate because of stereotypes like the ones you believe. A sassy black girl is a threat and needs to be dealt with. A sassy white girl is independent. The SVHS student was obviously going through something yesterday, to not recall that “talk.” and unfortunately, Deputy Slam proved that the talk is necessary.

You would not believe how much this dominated the news this morning. In the end, all that has been accomplished is further destruction of an already weak learning environment.

Turn discipline/control back over to the professionals who run the school

For those administrators/teachers who do not want to carry make you crap in your pants tasers on their belt either give them a snub nose 38 loaded with hollow points for their pocket or a short double barreled shotgun loaded with double aught buckshot with a sling to wear over their shoulder(like in the movie Godfather)

Any student who bitches and moans when instructed to do something gets zapped, plugged, blasted or all three if it is a clear sunny day

For those students who survive such encounters ship them over to Broad River Road to the multi million dollar private school run by the State

If any parent bitches and moans about discipline/control, tell them to home school their rug rat

“Who’s delegating rights?”

You are.

“Cops have things they are lawfully permitted to do that the average citizenry are not.”

Officer should not have “extra rights” that citizens don’t if one is to be logically consistent, which also yields justice.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 11:42 am

Alright, then let’s apply that logic. An officer lawfully apprehends a suspect and places them in their car for questioning. Can a non-official citizen do the same?

TroubleBaby October 28, 2015 at 11:45 am

” Can a non-official citizen do the same?”

Theoretically, yes- hence the ‘citizens arrest’.

There’s a whole circumstance of law surrounding that, but in principle yes.

Just so I’m clear, I’m not denying that cops are “super citizens” today with extra rights, I’m just saying it shouldn’t be that way.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 11:47 am

My only point was that parental actions with the home eliciting a DSS investigation and an officer apprehending a student on school grounds aren’t the same thing. There are too many variables and it doesn’t make sense to use it as an argument to discredit what the cop did.

TroubleBaby October 28, 2015 at 11:48 am

The cop was specifically directed to remove the student, that was his job in this situation. There was zero compliance from student and yet there were no injuries. He no longer has a job because of “public relations”, not because he “wasn’t doing his job”.

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 12:27 pm

The job to remove does not include doing it whatever the hell way he wanted to. LE have specific training on removing persons based on that person’s position. She was dead weight and what he did to “remove’ her violated all LE training for that situation.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 12:32 pm

I would dispute that she was merely “dead weight”. The more video we see, the more it becomes apparent that she was trying to stand her ground. She was not passive. Also, I don’t know what LE training and protocol would be for a perfectly similar situation. I’ve heard varying accounts, so to just give a blanket “he violated his training” statement seems too presumptuous at this point.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 12:27 pm

It’s amazing how some people find such a skewed lens through which to view things. All of a sudden a girl, after refusing to comply with orders to remove herself by a teach and then asst principal becomes just a “bratty young girl”. Completely ignoring the fact that she also refused the officer’s order, then tried to pull back when he attempted to pick her up by her arm and then flailed wildly (including hitting him in the face) when he pulled her to the ground to apprehend her. Yep, he should have just walked away.

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 12:32 pm

You can believe any fantasy you want, but he got fired because HE acted unproffesionally.
Not because she refused to follow his orders or because of any of her behavior.
Those are the facts. He could preform his job like an adult, so he lost it.
If it was in anyway her fault. He would still have a job. Simple as that. Even his boss could understand that. You realize the only reason we’re even talking about this is because of his behavior. Not hers.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 2:10 pm

In torts, you have to prove that you didn’t cause the situation that you’re suing over. For instance, if you drown in a pool with no fence, you family could make the reasonable claim that you were walking along, minding your own business and fell in. However, if you drown in a pool behind a six foot fence with keep out signs and motion detectors, your family would have a hard time proving that you didn’t create your own demise by climbing the fence, ignoring the alarms and warning signs.

Rakkasan October 28, 2015 at 2:46 pm

I know the situation did. Did he get a pass?

Rakkasan October 28, 2015 at 3:52 pm

That article discussed the lawfulness of the order to get out of the car. I was asking about a possible situation during which the officer went all Dirty Harry on her in the process.

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 2:48 pm

He’ll be sued on use of excessive force. She had no part in him deciding to use it.
Just because he had to enter the room doesn’t mean he is justified in using excessive force.
Pretty simple.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 2:49 pm

Not nearly as simple as you think. Why do you think we have so many damn lawyers?

TroubleBaby October 28, 2015 at 1:52 pm

I have to admit I’d take that ride(though it’s gonna have to be a brute to toss my 230# ass) for $300k.

lol

Mom October 28, 2015 at 12:37 pm

And Sherriff Lott made this decision based on video from a kid.

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 12:40 pm

Thank god that kid made the video. Otherwise that unemployed thug would continue abusing students. Funny how people here are embracing a jacked boot police state mentality. You want the USA to be like East Germany?

Mom October 28, 2015 at 12:42 pm

How do we know the video was not “edited”?

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 12:44 pm

Because he got fired. Now, why are you embracing a police state mentality?
This is a conservative, freedom loving website, right?

stumpknocker October 28, 2015 at 12:46 pm

because there is no “the video” there are at least 3 taken by 3 different people and they all jibe

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 1:07 pm

No answer, Mom? I guess she waiting for a dictator to tell her when and what to type.
Like a good police state loving citizen.

Mom October 28, 2015 at 1:18 pm

I’m just wondering how this will affect the discipline and order of the classroom in the future at SVHS. Obviously, the principal and administrator are impotent and lack power and authority over the students. Now the authority of all future SROs has been emasculated.

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 1:29 pm

Good. SROs shouldn’t be there to being with. But you whiney, police state loving fools want police everywhere, and armed like the military, because you’re scared of the world.
You want the state taking total care of your child. Thanks a lot, mom.

Mom October 28, 2015 at 1:58 pm

Nope. I want the schools to have the authority to discipline the OTHER children so that MY child can be safe and learn.

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 2:03 pm

Classic fearful, apologist answer. With suck ups like you, martial law will be a breeze.
Now, let the state raise your child. You’re gonna love democratic socialism.

TroubleBaby October 28, 2015 at 2:07 pm

“You’re gonna love democratic socialism.”

lulz

I can’t wait to hear that one. I’ll bet every other sentence is a contradiction. Something tells me he won’t be addressing who he thinks should own the means of production.

Rakkasan October 28, 2015 at 2:30 pm

Tell me you know there is no East Germany. Please

Derp October 28, 2015 at 2:32 pm

Umm, you can make comparisons to historical entities. If he’d said “You want the USA to be like Nazi Germany?” would your response be “Hurr, durr, you know there is no Nazi Germany”?

Rakkasan October 28, 2015 at 2:38 pm

Please remember what board this is. I have read LOTS of crazier things here

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 2:44 pm

Yes. You do know there WAS an East Germany and they had an abusive and pervasive police force. What other East Germany would I be talking about?

Rakkasan October 28, 2015 at 2:52 pm

Sound of big sigh of relief.

If you want to see a great movie about the Stasi, watch “The Lives of Others”

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 12:42 pm

You do know the videos are real and have been substantiated, even if they were taken by a kid. Geez.

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 12:45 pm

No, he made his decision based on the cop’s actions.
Just that.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 12:52 pm

Not according to Lott, he mad his decision in consultatation with his “constituents”.

TroubleBaby October 28, 2015 at 2:05 pm

Lott is a horrendous double talker/liar…lol…remember the other day he said the officer told the girl she was under arrest before the shenanigans started?

He’ll probably weasel out of that with a “I was misinformed” disclaimer, but it smacks of a Dan “It’s a clean shoot” Johnson type move to me; the usual circling of the wagons.

I’ve always felt there should be citizen review boards with teeth and that they should be filled by lottery/sortition until one day people hopefully wake up and privatize police.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 12:37 pm

While I agree with that, it seemed like the officer was trying to get her completely out of the chair and more to open space. In hindsight, it ended up looking much worse than he may have intended it to be. It was a spur of the moment action, but I agree Lott was right to reference it. It’s still a bit too much hindsight for me.

stumpknocker October 28, 2015 at 12:56 pm

literally the whole world was watching him, the BBC is carrying this story, i don’t think he could have done a better job representing the sheriff’s office and the people of columbia.

Rakkasan October 28, 2015 at 2:49 pm

Yup. It was it the major British papers. In Norway when somebody or something was very crazy, they’d say, “Wow, that’s really Texas”. I’m thinking we’re going to see the shift to, Wow, that’s totally SC”.

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 1:41 pm

Not impressed with Lott’s statement. He tried to play both sides of the fence. To appease those who thought it was all the girl’s fault, he brings up her interference with other student’s education-what business is it of LE, in their official duties, to worry about that. For those who thought Fields was an unprofessional brut thug, he fired him. What the girl did has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the deputy going OUTSIDE of his training and protocol. She did not cause him to NOT follow procedure.

TroubleBaby October 28, 2015 at 1:43 pm

What I find interesting about Lott’s speech was this quote:

““Clearly the video that surfaced depicts the actions of this officer and has revealed a history of these types of activities by him in the past.”

How is it that the PD was not aware that this officer had a “history”?

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 1:46 pm

He then walked that back saying that the campus wanted him there, administration and faculty liked and respected him and the students liked him. The students and admin folks present supported Fields.

TroubleBaby October 28, 2015 at 1:49 pm

I’m missing how that’s relevant. Are you saying, that Lott’s saying, because some students and admin supported the officer that other instances of excessive violence were overlooked?

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 2:10 pm

Excellent point.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 2:36 pm

No, I don’t think he meant what it sounded like he meant. I don’t think he meant to say that they had uncovered a long line of wrongdoing.

TroubleBaby October 28, 2015 at 2:42 pm

Oh, that’s a pretty big gaffe on his part if he didn’t mean it.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 2:45 pm

With Leon Lott it’s kind of hard to figure out what he’s talking about sometimes. What I suspect he was referring to was the three cases in which former Deputy Fields was named. At least that was my take on it in context.

Rakkasan October 28, 2015 at 2:29 pm

Until they didn’t. Now, nobody knows him except the folks bitching about how he’s a victim of PC or politics

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 2:31 pm

Who were we talking about again?

Rakkasan October 28, 2015 at 3:47 pm

“The students and admin folks present supported Fields.”

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 4:13 pm

Fields, football fields?

Rakkasan October 28, 2015 at 4:41 pm

Dunno. It was YOUR post

Wrap it up COL. Almost time for retreat. …..

Sarah Toenin October 29, 2015 at 9:20 am

History is irrelevant absent a finding of guilt in a court of law except when mob justice rules. Cops are easy targets for disenfranchised criminals upset about being arrested or charged with a crime. If you find a veteran cop without a complaint on file.. be concerned.

TroubleBaby October 29, 2015 at 11:07 am

That’s what’s interesting. Leon is suggesting that a history unknown to the PD just “sprang up”. Do you buy that?

Rakkasan October 29, 2015 at 12:21 pm

Do you like your doctor’s to all have a record of lawsuits too? You wouldn’t want them practicing too defensively, would you?

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 1:44 pm

You don’t like Lott’s statement because you think the fact that she got “rodeo clowned” gives her a pass on breaking the law. (yes, she broke the law, disrupting a class is a violation of SC Code 59:63 http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t59c063.php)

There is a back story on the YLIQ.

Rocky Verdad October 28, 2015 at 1:47 pm

Good, YLIQ, keepin’ it PC. Sucks the fired the guy, should have chalked it up to a bad event, reprimanded the officer and suspended the girl.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 1:51 pm

She was suspended and will likely go to the alternative school, as I said, there’s a back story.

I figured Lott would have to can him, he’s a Democrat and needs the minority vote to win in Richland County – that’s my cynical view. That said, I think he did a good job walking the line between “my officer did wrong” but “that doesn’t excise what the YLIQ did”

Rocky Verdad October 28, 2015 at 1:54 pm

Yeah, but I don’t think firing the officer was right either. Usually I might agree like the guy shooting the black dude in the back in No Chas, but in this case, even my wife, at first horrified at the video on TV, said she figured that girl was pushing his buttons. And she probably was. I’d have re-assigned him for a couple of years, maybe take him from the coaching job for now, and then address through policy adjustments. It’s not like he stuck his gun into a car and went all Wyatt Earp behind a Hardees over a sack of weed.

Sarah Toenin October 29, 2015 at 9:16 am

Despite what he SAID, the deputy was fired. It sends a clear message to all the Obama voters that the YLIQ was an innocent victim, guilty only of being black. The officer didn’t ‘do wrong’. Anyone with a pair of eyes & a brain cell can clearly see he didn’t toss her ‘like a rag doll’ or ‘attack her’. Removing someone by force is never a pretty sight, yet it’s the only way when they refuse to leave. Doesn’t matter what this girl’s background story is… nothing gives anyone the inherent right to disrupt a classroom & refuse a lawful order. Lott is a slimeball, as are the rest of Richland County politicians.

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 1:49 pm

BS. I have said on this thread and yesterday’s thread that the girl should be expelled and charged with disturbing schools AND the deputy fired and charged with A/B. Unlike you, I can comprehend that finding fault with both is not contradictory.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 1:52 pm

We’re strangely in agreement then (except about charging the deputy) – I never saw you comments about suspending the YLIQ.

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 1:57 pm

My comments about expulsion, which is worse, were on this thread and definitely many times on yesterday’s stories about this incident.

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 2:00 pm

When there’s more than a 1,000 comments on the three threads, I usually only have time to read/respond to my debates.

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 2:03 pm

No problem, just letting you know I have felt that way from the beginning.

let me out of the closet MOM October 28, 2015 at 2:26 pm

The babbling bitch SYNTwist is back.

CorruptionInColumbia October 28, 2015 at 2:00 pm

He’s kissing ass, as usual, as expected. Please see my lengthy comment to Outta There, above ( or below, depending on how your comments are ordered).

The Colonel October 28, 2015 at 2:01 pm

Don’t disagree that he’s sucking up to his voters, just admiring how well he did it – “style over content”.

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 2:42 pm

He doing his job and firing an abusive cop who’s behavior interferes with the duties of the whole department. Pretty simple. No conspiracies.

Rakkasan October 28, 2015 at 2:26 pm

Which was a the clearest, but not only, excessive use of force. I wish I could say that that was abundantly clear from the beginning; but, I would have to add the qualifier “to most people”. I shouldn’t be totally surprised. For 13 years I heard Commanders say, “But she poked him in the chest, had an affair, disrespected him in front of his friends, shoved him too (pick one or more choices). How can I punish just the Soldier?” Easy answer CDR: because he broke the law by committing assault and battery. Sentence according to known extenuation and mitigation, but don’t skip adjudicating. I know you’ve heard of suspending punishment.

Bad work memories triggered. Dark clouds looming. Wait, I got it!! He was just confused. He thought he was back at dwarf bowling with his buddies at the bachelor party. It was his PTSD that did it. No wait. Doesn’t Fields have diabetes. Over to Lonny Randolph at the scene. Lonnie, what can you tell us about diabetes and psychotic behavior? What? You’ve heard the Former Officer Fields has announced he’s entering rehab? He admits he is powerless over steroids and is ready to make amends to the dwarfs he has harmed.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 12:35 pm

His getting fired has nothing to do with the girl per se and everything to do with PR. It’s incredible how you are still saying the girl is blameless. That’s obviously not true and her actions dictate what steps the officer has to take. You can keep deflecting from the point by making claims about whether he was an “adult” or not, but that doesn’t make a case for whether or not what he did was wrong.

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 12:37 pm

Lott made my case when he fired that thug. It doesn’t need validation from you.
I’m not even sure why you’re even trying to argue otherwise?

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 12:40 pm

The argument I’m having with you has nothing to do with Lott. It wouldn’t change my point even if he didn’t fire him.

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 12:42 pm

It has to do with Lott’s decision to fire the SRO.
The POS SRO’s behavior caused him to get fired.
Stay on point.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 12:44 pm

I never disagreed with that. It was his “behavior” that got him fired. But it was that coupled with the media frenzy, not his behavior alone. The optics driven by the media made it blow up. I’m done with you. Your childish remarks about the SRO show you don’t care about rational debate.

Otta There October 28, 2015 at 12:47 pm

Media? First, it was the kid’s fault, now it’s the media?
Wow, you’re trying really hard. lol
I bet you’re done. You can even stay with your own arguement.
Later.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 12:49 pm

Try to keep up. We were first talking about the actual incident. Then you started talking about the firing. Thus the pivot from the incident (and the blame to the student) to the media (the partial blame for the firing). You changed the argument, not me. But who cares anyways, right? The officer is just a POS thug.

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 12:52 pm

Thought you were done?
lol.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 12:52 pm

I changed the argument this time :)

Outta There October 28, 2015 at 12:55 pm

Damn, you’re sad.
Bye.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 12:57 pm

That’s all you’ve got left? And over a tongue in cheek comment? Yeah, I’m the sad one…and the officer is just a POS thug.

grasan October 28, 2015 at 2:15 pm

You know the media has a habit of only telling part of the story.

grasan October 28, 2015 at 2:14 pm

If he’s a POS, then there are two in this story.

flip October 28, 2015 at 2:38 pm

Funny, never saw you mentioned.

CorruptionInColumbia October 28, 2015 at 1:49 pm

Lot did this because of his philosophy of kissing ass to stay elected. His self righteousness knows no bounds.

This is but one more deputy sacrificed at the altar of Leon’s need for political expediency. Never mind the many times the deputy did a great job. It is all about this one incident when his actions didn’t align with policy. Anyone who has ever worked the job on the street and had to physically engage suspects knows that the stuff in training is mostly bullshit. It works perfectly in the choreographed, magical, world of make-believe, also known as “Training” or “DT”, where your parter doesn’t want to hurt you.

Leon has fired a lot of good deputies when they didn’t align perfectly with his policies, when it was politically expedient.

What Leon would like to forget, and would like others to forget, are the times when he has violated his own policies, sometimes placing the public in unnecessary danger.

I guess he has forgotten the time he had weapons stored improperly and against policy in his vehicle at home and someone stole them. Rumor has it that at least one was an automatic/ select fire weapon.

How about the time he was speaking at a public function and left his sidearm there, where a (fortunately) honest visitor found it?

Hasn’t he fired deputies for similar policy violations? I guess it’s good to be king.

Tazmaniac October 28, 2015 at 2:03 pm

With the political atmosphere of an SO, you would think he would already have had a mutiny. Any deputies oppose him last election?

CorruptionInColumbia October 28, 2015 at 2:18 pm

They wouldn’t dare. He is God and would smite them. Seriously, he has such a powerful political machine backing him, like Metts, it would be a waste of time, money, and effort, to try. Not only that, he will support his deputies in their bid to run for Sheriff in surrounding counties in an effort to expand his control and domain. The Sheriff in Kershaw County is an AH buddy of his. The Sheriff in Fairfield County was a deputy of his until he was elected. He tried to get another deputy elected as Sheriff in Lexington County but fortunately, that didn’t go through. Leon has to be content that our coroner is another of his former deputies.

If I were Sheriff Dennis of Sumter County, I would keep my eyes open.

Leon sucks October 28, 2015 at 8:53 pm

Leon “Shorty” Lott has been attempting to build his own little SLED by surrounding himself with his cronies that would bow to him. Hell, his wife works there!

CorruptionInColumbia October 29, 2015 at 1:49 am

I had forgotten about that!

Sarah Toenin October 28, 2015 at 2:44 pm

Leon ‘Kristallnacht’ Lott is appeasing folks on the plantation as not to jeopardize his ability to purchase military equipment from the feds.  It also allows him to continue his mock home invasions (ostensibly touted for military training) on the very demographic he’s catering to. The guy is nothing more than a 4 ft poverty pimp in every sense of the word. In Richland County you can’t find an honest politician or public official anywhere. I hope  RCSD deputies protest the Firing of Deputy Fields. Unless you want to give unruly thugs unfettered access to commandeer the classroom indefinitely, there is no way to remove someone refusing to leave their chair except by force.  And the next time there’s a school stabbing or shooting in Richland County, don’t expect force to be used in order to protect citizens & restore order.  You better pray ‘talk reasoning’ works because that’s all our officers are allowed to do, evidently. Anyone who thinks the problem is with the deputy instead of the teen’s unacceptable behavior should be forced to send their own kids to SV.  ?It’s because of this type of behavior I spend four hours a day driving my kids to another school as opposed to the one we’re zoned for, SV. If I was a parent who had kids at SV and I wanted anything better for them other than a future on welfare, I’d yank them out of that school asap. ?

CorruptionInColumbia October 28, 2015 at 2:56 pm

WOW!!!! That was a “SLAM DUNK”!!!!

Well said !

Sarah Toenin October 28, 2015 at 3:18 pm

The fate of Ben Fields was determined the second Lott called the corrupt DOJ & FBI. He called the DOJ before he spoke to his department or the school. He wasn’t even in town. Yet, they conducted the fastest, most ‘impartial’ & thorough investigation man has ever known. Thugette has been deemed an innocent victim & the vicious white cop lost his job. He was fired before Obama could even invite Thugette to the White House to celebrate her feral behavior.

Big Pharm October 29, 2015 at 12:15 pm

Jay Z October 29, 2015 at 12:38 pm

Leon “Kristallnacht” Lott? Whoa! You must have gone to the Glenn Beck School of Public Commentary. Don’t they also have a course on selling gold in that program?

Anyway, everyone knows Cristal is spelled with a C and one L. And yes, you drink it at night, except when you have it at breakfast the morning after.

Thus, the firing. Nothing to dispute.

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 12:40 pm

No, he should not have walked away. What a dumb comment. He should have used appropriate LE techniques. Not hard, very simple to understand what he SHOULD have done.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 12:42 pm

But I keep asking what that would be in this situation. I don’t believe I’ve heard anything.

Journey Bell October 28, 2015 at 12:48 pm

I have been posting a list of techniques that LE are allowed to use, and will be happy to cite again here. He could have placed pressure points on her to make her stand up, or handcuffed her to the desk and/or remove her and desk at same time into the hall, or gave her an ultimatum, to leave or he would tase her. All appropriate LE techniques in line with their training, in a situation where person is sitting, not moving i.e. dead weight.

Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 12:51 pm

And I agreed with that if she truly was “dead weight”. I just dispute that point.

21stconfed October 28, 2015 at 12:55 pm

He wasn’t being a “disciplinarian”, he was attempting to get her to comply. She had refused twice to the teacher and then the assistant principal. Quit deflecting from the real issue with all these other side issues.

Reply
Mom October 28, 2015 at 12:34 pm

Why are we paying an assistant principal/disciplinarian if he/she can’t discipline the students? And btw, we don’t even know his/her name.

Reply
Daniel Boome October 28, 2015 at 12:38 pm

So it’s their job to discipline, not the parents? Regardless, you are deflecting again. The teach and administrator were merely trying to order the student out of the classroom. Nothing more, nothing less. You are trying to bring too many irrelevant side issues into this.

Reply
Mom October 28, 2015 at 12:41 pm

Yes, actually. A big part of the principal’s job is to maintain order and discipline at the school. In this case, the principal delegates these duties to an assistant principal.

Sarah Toenin October 28, 2015 at 3:41 pm

No, that may be what you were told but the only point of an SO is to maintain order by keeping unruly, feral teens from commandeering classrooms & hallways indefinitely. As you can clearly see here, thugs don’t respect their teachers & don’t follow the rules of administrators. So while YOU may be okay with some punk hijacking a classroom with deplorable behavior, other parents are NOT. This delicate wall flower wasn’t interested in taking directives from anyone including a sheriff’s deputy.  There is absolutely no way to remove someone refusing to get out of their chair except BY FORCE. It’s not a pretty sight when it happens but it doesn’t make it wrong. Any responsible parent would have beat that teens a$$ when she got home AND forced her to apologize to both the school and the officer. But we no longer live in a civilized society. We make martyrs & victims out of criminals and we demonize the very people we rely on to maintain peace & order. ?

After seeing more videos, and hearing statements from various people associated with the incident, this does not appear to be the open and shut case that many people are touting.
The teacher was the first to notice her and ask her to leave. She did not comply. Next a school Supervisor came into the room and asked her to leave, again no compliance from the student. The Officer was then directed to go into the classroom and told to remove the student from the classroom. Again, the officer was directed to remove her. Had she simply gotten up and walked away, everything would probably been OK. When the officer tried to get her out of her chair, she resisted, struck the officer a number of times, and actually was somewhat responsible for he desk tipping over in a backward direction. The officer then secured and physically removed her from the classroom. He accomplished the task he was directed by school officials to accomplish.
The student was responsible initiating the actions that led to her being taken from the classroom. She was also responsible for escalating the tensions, once she was confronted by the officer who was given the specific task of removing her from the classroom.
Unfortunately, the officer will be the sole villain in the affair, for just doing his job as he was directed to do by school personnel. He will probably be fired and have his reputation tainted forever. The student will be another hero-like icon of the left. She should, in no way, be held up as a helpless victim in a situation that she was responsible for initiating. If this happens, just expect more, bad behavior in schools.

Everything you’re saying is pretty obvious, but too many people are trying to boil the officer’s actions down to too many technicalities and ultimately allowing that over-analysis to reach the conclusion that he “wasn’t doing his job” and should “be fired”.

Yes, the officer was doing as he was directed by school officials after two attempts to make this person behave.
And most people have not yet seen the video where she punches him in the face several times. She then so physically contorted herself fighting him that she was responsible for the desk tipping over. This whole episode needs to be carefully explained to some of the lefties so they will understand.

I wonder what the Secret Service is going to do when Obama honors her at the White House like Clock Boy? If she sits in the Oval Office and decides she doesn’t want to leave, are they going to call in a FBI negotiator?

What disciplinary action will be taken toward all of the students who pulled out their phones and took the videos? They were in violation of school policy and cell phone use.

Maybe they will suspend or expel them all, because that will do justice to this situation. Geez, anything to defend an out of control and now, fired cop.

all he needs are a couple of squishys on the jury and he will walk, her lawyer will know that, it will settle out of court.

I would hope they would be called in by the principal or vice principal and told that they would serve an afternoon suspension or ISO or some appropriate level of punishment. And I would hope that they will comply.

The maneuver that he [Fields] used was not based on the training and was not acceptable, per Lott a few minutes ago. When he threw her across the room and lost control of her that was unacceptable, per Lott also. As I have been saying, LE have been specifically trained to remove persons in certain situations. Fields absolutely did not follow that training. As I have also stated, LE cannot “remove” persons in whatever the hell way they want to.

And if the mouthy little bitch would have complied with every person’s instructions and not punched the RO in the face she wouldn’t have been thrown across the room. Blame everyone but the root cause.

That’s what you are doing. Blaming everyone but the cop.
Anyways, he’s gone and will be sued to high heaven.
Case closed. Unless the FBI wants a piece of that.

i don’t think the investigation will find his action to rise to the level of criminal assault, he went too far, but not far enough that he deserves prison time

it will settle out of court, her lawyer won’t gamble that a couple of squishys won’t be on the jury

This officer will sue the school district while that typical black thugs family whores her out for money.

Glad I’m not a public school teacher . Doesn’t pay enough to have to put up with the hoodlums. Folks complaining about them being overpaid or having bennies should rethink that stance.

It is a good job and I was payed well. Not worth it today as the Democrat Party teacher unions have destroyed the public schools.

Typically 3 different reasons people send their children to private schools or home school-faith,for safety reasons or academics.

Public schools fail in all 3 areas today because of liberals.

I forgot to mention that I loved blowing boys in the school gym. I’d assign them detention, then tell them they could get out early if they dropped their pants.

SRO’s weren’t around back in my day, I got my inner child predator on.

You know, saying the SRO was wrong and overstepped his authority/ used excessive force is not mutually exclusive of saying this girl was in the wrong too. Disrespectful, disobedient and disruptive. Let’s not pretend she was just sitting there quietly and suddenly got body slammed by an officer. That would be an entirely different story. Saying she was also in the wrong is not the same thing as saying she deserved what he did. She didn’t -and no student does, ever. Unless maybe they pulled out a weapon? I just can’t believe how many people are trying to ignore the facts…it was HER BEHAVIOR that was the reason this SRO got called to the classroom. Unfortunately, he mishandled it, by a long shot. She’s a victim…but not a completely innocent one.

She acted like a little bitch in the classroom, her fault.
He lost his temper after probably having to deal with this kinda shit one to many times, his fault.
I guess things would have been different had he been stabbed in the neck with a pencil or worse ..?
He was asked to remove her from the classroom, … should he have tossed her from the classroom, No …
But he probably isnt the devil himself either, ….
Had a principal tell me a story one time about a black girl who was acting up in his school, they called her dad who was a highway patrolman, when he showed the girl and the principal where in his office, the dad says can you excuse us for a minute and then proceeded to take off his belt and whip her ass !!! … something tells me this girls family has taught her to be someone who would act like this, sad … how would all you saints have handled it, “please hunny be a good little bitch and leave before I call for backup, or maybe I should tase you, or maybe we should just be ok with you being a bitch, ….

Ah, Leon: always the
quintessential political animal: Throw your “officer of the year”
under the bus before all the facts are known. What a guy! I have two suggestions
for you; seek employment with LeRoy over at DPS who ascribes to your management
style, and schedule an appointment to have a sit-down with Sheriff David A.
Clarke, Jr. I’m sure you would find that to be enlightening.

Does anyone know why the SRO wouldn’t have used his taser as his “first choice” to get her to comply?

I saw a local news segment saying that SRO’s have tasers and pepper spray and are allowed to use them at their discretion.

I’m not in law enforcement, but I know if I had gone in that classroom and she used her entitled, passive aggressive eye-rolling BS on me when I asked her if she was going to come with me, I would have clicked the taser on and told her, “we can either do this the easy way or the hard way; your call.”

If she didn’t stand up within 5 seconds, I would’ve popped her.

So, back to my original question; anyone know why?

Does anyone have any recent updates regarding the student’s backstory? I’ve seen reports circulating that the student possibly had recently experienced the death and untimely passing of her grandmother, and just prior to that that her mother also passed away. Has anyone else seen or heard of this? If so, please indicate by identifying the source. Thanks.
