THINGS ARE GETTING SERIOUS IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA
|| By FITSNEWS || In case you missed it, World War III is about to break out in the South China Sea. Over these islands, apparently.
The protagonists in this global drama? China and the United States (a.k.a. two nations bankrolled by China).
The fight is about currency (China wants its currency, the yuan, admitted to the global reserve basket). However the proximate cause of the looming conflict is becoming less important by the day.
Where do things stand? China is reportedly preparing to enforce a no-fly zone over its territorial claims in the South China Sea, the latest escalation between the two superpowers.
If America defies the Chinese no-fly zone, well … you can predict what will happen next.
Things could get ugly … fast. In fact, a prominent Chinese nationalist publication predicted war was “inevitable” if America continued to oppose Chinese claims.
“If the United States’ bottom line is that China has to halt its activities, then a US-China war is inevitable in the South China Sea,” the paper stated.
China is also beefing up its military in anticipation of a conflict with the American Navy, according to The Wall Street Journal, although that should come as no surprise.
“China is building a modern and regionally powerful Navy with a modest but growing capability for conducting operations beyond China’s near-seas region,” a 2014 Congressional Research Service report (.pdf here) concluded.
What sort of build-up are we talking about?
“China’s naval modernization effort encompasses a broad array of weapon acquisition programs, including anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs), anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs), submarines, surface ships, aircraft, and supporting C4ISR (command and control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) systems,” the report stated. “China’s naval modernization effort also includes reforms and improvements in maintenance and logistics, naval doctrine, personnel quality, education and training, and exercises.”

The purpose of all this?
Among other reasons, “asserting or defending China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea.”
Translation? China is ready to rumble.
China is also ready to play the blame game, citing America’s interventionist bent as the reason for the contentiousness.
“A certain country has increased the frequency of its close-in surveillance of China and that has caused a problem,” Chinese colonel Yang Yujun said this week, according to CNN. “Some people have been intentionally and repeatedly hyping this topic. Their purpose is to smear the Chinese military and dramatize regional tensions. And I’m not ruling it out that this is being done to find an excuse for certain country to take actions in the future.”

America is rushing headlong into the War on Terror II and a new Cold War with Russia. Can our taxpayers really afford a three-front fight? Especially when none of the three fronts even remotely involving defending the homeland (a.k.a. “fighting for our freedom”)?

We have agreements with the Philippines. But Folks-Chamberlain would accede to the claims of the Chinese for “peace in our time”. Next it could be US Pacific territories and/or Taiwan. What then?

to the submarine community, all surface ships are referred to by the same term….targets. We have enough SSNs based out of Guam and Diego Garcia to handle Chinese capital ships.
When submarines submerge the hull and structures surrounding the people tank creak, groan, and make all kinds of ungodly noises. New guys (non-quals) often ask, “Is that sound normal?” The more experienced sailors (the guys that are qualified) often yell, “HELL NO!” and run. This tends to upset the newer crew members.
Kinda like sending “cherry” aircraft maintainers to fetch a bucket of “prop wash”……………….

What is ‘short strapping’ and how does it work?
Sometimes submariners will do anything to break the monotony of life on a submarine. On one boat, the USS George C. Marshall (SSBN-654) someone got a hold of a rubber eraser and carved a foot shape into it. The man then got an ink pad and used the foot as a stamp, leaving little footprints all over the boat. Over and over again. This happened over the course of an entire patrol. The sailors tried to find out who was doing it, and even had a suspect, but the culprit was never caught.
Watch out for the guys in the Radio. Sometimes when they get bored they feel like adding things to the information coming in. In one such case on the U.S.S. Thomas Jefferson (SSBN-618) in the late 1970s the radio guys added in information about Bigfoot one week, starting with, “Bigfoot Captured.” The crew fell for it, so the radio guys did it again the next week with, “Bigfoot Intelligent.” What the crew were thinking at this point I don’t know, but it happened yet again, “Bigfoot Has Language.” At this point the Skipper, who was in on it, even had to ask if the joke was still going on. Sinking a carrier isn’t even a reality without blowing it in half, it’d be like trying to sink a cube of styrofoam. Short of a nuclear weapon China doesn’t have the capability to blow a carrier in half. Any attack at sea or air would be a suicide mission for the Chinese.
The only way the Chinese are going to hurt us is through a cyber attack. The world would cut off all support and in six months we’d have more Chinese dying from starvation than battle. They know we know that.

The Chinese didn’t build their carrier, they bought an unfinished carrier from Russia. It is not the equivalent of one of our “Ford Class” carriers, requiring STOL aircraft to use the ski jump launch system but it is a genuine threat in the region.

The “Co-Prosperity Sphere” was a euphemism Japan came up with in 1940 to justify their seizing most of the Western Pacific.
China is flexing her muscles. Technologically, building an island is cheaper and faster than building a carrier. If you don’t need to project power beyond that region, strategically, it’s a sound idea. China has designs on Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines and the rest of their “sphere”.
And where will they stop? Yes, I remember Japan, WWII.
Strategically, if they have an Island (small as it is), then they have the ability to expand territory. Wasn’t that our Hawaii? Of course, the scale is smaller, but….
While it may be cheaper to build islands than aircraft carriers, beyond tactical bases, “building land” for other uses is impractical. For one thing, the islands have zip, zero, nada in trends of resource and must be provisioned in order to be inhabited.

My opinions on the topics are somewhat biased. In my 20’s I was married to an ASO who love to discuss military history and strategy. The topic of China was often brought up as one of the greatest threats to America. They need more land mass and have a huge infantry. I bounced information this morning in a effort to dispute some of the bias, but I land on information that confirms it v. dispute. For example, to grow the amount of grain they require to feed their population they need additional land. Just to grow grain the land mass they need is the size of the state of CA.
Japan is about the size of CA. There is also dispute over the international waterways and the impact this could have on international trade should they acquire those island. It is also noteworthy that many sources indicate the same fears I express – those islands would provide them with a launching pad.
I can see nothing good that would come from allowing them to proceed.

Yes, flattening out an island is cheaper than building a “real” aircraft carrier … cheaper than building an actual, full sized navy air force & fleet, too. Those carriers would be forever tied to land based military airports … or suicide missions. The Chinese air forces still have not figured out how to do that. It is STOL in the sense that it can take off from a short deck ski jump aircraft carrier with no catapult versus a traditional fighter tasty takes a mile long run way. Janes says they can barely get off the jump with more than fuel.

But I also think it is necessary that America exists, unless we want to be a people without a country.

Now granted, I’ve been guilty of underestimating the stupidity of people, so there’s that…but it seems that two nations having nukes but agreeing not to use them but instead kill each others pawns traditionally is something that we would see in a Monty Python skit:

In a world of uncertainty and chaos – I prefer to err on the side of caution. Unlikely it will be a WWIII – sure. Could it be? Sure.
I hope it does not come to that, and I would proceed cautiously, until I couldn’t, if I were POTUS.
