That money, big money, and effort, if it is to be given to anybody, should be going to the citizens of Spartanburg, not the citizens of Syria. Add all of this together with the hundreds of millions given to the FSA due to John McCain’s insanity and Obama carrying on Bush’s foreign policy of middle east destabilization, in addition to the known unknown amount of moolah that passes through the CIA, along with the Pentagon’s ‘missing’ trillions. Imagine if even a tenth of a tenth of that were ‘invested’ in Spartanburg. Faith-based funding is a disaster, why was it not strictly limited? There are millions passing through these front groups to deal with the collapsed southern border. The Fed just keeps on printing 85 billion a month. I thought Haley said that SC wouldn’t be taking any Central American refugees, ha ha, so what about this?

About 5 years ago I spent months studying this type of re-settlement. I was defending my hometown.
I was shocked to find out how much money was made by the organizations, venders, contractors, faith groups, etc.
It is financially driven, fueled by liberal groups and organizations, super charged by TAX policy and the US taxpayers and all clocked in the illusion of “faith.”
Spartanburg…run…and run quickly from this mess.
West Columbia beat the Bantu back when the Lutherans wanted to settle them there. The folks in Spartanburg can beat this lousy idea.
Spartanburg reality: 23 percent poverty rate, declining middle class population in the city, significant crime issues, devepment controlled by a select few, leaders with no vision, high taxes. And the “liberal evangelical” (contradiction) types want to send refugees here? PSSH!
Hell, no wonder. Nearly ever piece of downtown property that has been sold has been bought by Wofford, Converse, First Baptist or another church. This takes the property off the tax roles. Not a brain in the government.
And Scooter, don’t forget the medical establishment that buys property and removes it from the tax rolls. Spartanburg Regional is a city unto itself. The city leadership particularly is inept because they let this happen and then foist another tax increase or fee on taxpayers to compensate.

Lots of nice real estate in downtown Spartanburg bought/owned by investors (especially around Morgan Square where the picture was taken = shit hot brand new buildings have gone up in the last 5-10 years) and as far as I know not a one of them is owned by Wofford, Converse or downtown churches.
Now to be accurate & fair balanced (unlike Fox News), the medical types have bought property and have renovated some old mills and such (to good use I might add) and the Catholic Church did buy up adjoining property adjacent to the existing church and have built a magnificent church but it is towards the eastern side of town right beside the First Baptist Church area. (the two churches have always shared a parking lot BTW).
Most would not consider those properties “ground zero” downtown Spartanburg either
Look around those buildings, new and not so new, and see the empty spaces, vacant lots and blighted structures. Every piece of real estate that sits unoccupied represents less tax revenue ( sales, business license, hospitality), and every parcel purchased by a not for profit represents diminished tax revenue. SRMC, Wofford, the churches, and others continue to screw the taxpayer with their acquisitions. The city, already revenue challenged, has to invent creative new revenue streams (refuse pickup fees, storm water fees, etc) to keep pace with the ever increasing costs of government.

Years back, Columbia City Council brought in Bantu refugees from Africa. Ask them how much THAT cost, and how successful it has been. Crickets.
