GOVERNOR’S NEW “CODE OF CONDUCT” CONTAINS SOME SENSIBLE REFORMS

|| By FITSNEWS || We don’t say it often, but S.C. governor Nikki Haley deserves credit …

Haley has instituted a new “code of conduct” for state employees (well, those in her cabinet) banning them from using social media during working hours.  The ban includes – but is not limited to – Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Wait … isn’t that a repression of free speech?  Um, no.  Government employees are free to express themselves to their hearts’ content prior to 9:00 a.m., during their lunch break and after 5:00 p.m. (a.k.a. the times of the day taxpayers aren’t paying them to work).

What will the vast majority of state employees do now?  Good question …

Haley’s new code of conduct also bans state employees from using government resources to advance their personal businesses – something that’s been a problem in her administration in the past – and imposes new restrictions on which jobs employees can take after they leave state agencies.  The goal of these new employment restrictions?  Prohibiting “pay-to-play” contract awards in which employees steer lucrative deals to specific firms – and then take employment with those firms as a reward.

Don’t get us wrong: Haley has zero credibility herself when it comes to ethics reform (and she will likely continue to spend a disproportionate amount of her time on social media), but that doesn’t change the fact these are worthwhile ideas – which ought to be applied to all state employees.

Now if only we could get Haley to embrace the notion of fewer state employees (performing only core government functions) … then maybe we’d be getting someplace.

RAPID REACTION

I’ve also heard that state employees now have to give 48 hours notice before they sign up for PTO! Rumor is they are also mulling over banning smoking/vape pens except in the smoking areas.

Seriously man…is this what your news has come down to? The latest HR policies at the state house?

Maybe Liz’ reviews of her 2 martini “stress breaker” lunches aren’t so bad after all. If you can just get Taylor to post some bikini shots, your site might pick up some.

Wow.

This is relevant, because historically state employment policies have been a template for private business policies. If the state bans something, it could influence whether Ma’s Faxing bans something.

How does Smirks get away with it? :-)

Yep! January 26, 2015 at 1:22 pm

My money says he works for gov’t, assuming he has a jobby job.

He got pretty upset the last discussion about having a job though, even linked to a video about someone bitching about not being able to get a job. Smirks hides his job status pretty well.

Thing is, Smirks is no dummy, so even if he’s an invalid in a chair clicking away on a keyboard all day here, I know he could get a job and be productive doing the same for some employer for data entry, customer service, etc.

We’ll never know if he’s employed and if so who it is…because if his employer knew how much time he spends here he’d be fired.

Farley Chickson January 26, 2015 at 1:38 pm

Yep…however I ain’t about where he works or what he does nor would I ever want to see anyone lose their job….just love jabbing at him because he is such a hypocrite about GT (accusing him of being on welfare,Medicaid etc…)and yet he screws his boss/taxpayers (?), M-F, 8-5, everyday. :-)

What happened to the Twitter account you were bragging about, pogo? Did one of your personalities “hack it” and post something that another personality flagged to get the account shut down? I guess absolutely fake names don’t get stuck in the “Twitter Gulag” with Todd Kincannon. They just get shit-canned.

Breaks my heart.

Farley Chickson January 26, 2015 at 7:18 pm

Hey Boz. Thought we were going to leave each other alone?
The twitter account? My email accounts (personal and professional) were ‘hacked’ recently-again. We are working with ‘others’ to find out who did it.

My ‘cousin’ Vinny thought it would be a good idea to set up the twitter account. As far as I know it is still active and thank you for visiting. We mean it. Both of us.

p.s. who are ‘pogo’ and Todd Kincannon?

Buz Martin January 26, 2015 at 7:47 pm

Yeah you’re right. I’m sure it’s a total coincidence that pogo also claimed to have a “Cousin Vinny.” Vinny LeHotsky? Some people think that’s you. I don’t,just for the record. And you know who Todd Kincannon is.

Hacked AGAIN? LOL What are the odds that “Farley” and “Flippy” and “Sandi” and “pogo” all got constantly stalked and hacked? I’ll leave that to others to decide

Carry on, pogo.

Farley Chickson January 26, 2015 at 7:50 pm

Boz, you are really fucking up. WE will leave it to the folks on here, as you suggested.

Carry on as well.

Buz Martin January 26, 2015 at 7:55 pm

A might touchy, aren’t you, poges?

I agreed not to attack you IF you did not tell lies about me, as you have often done in the past. I never said I would not call you on your bullshit. That is not attack, it is merely speaking truth.

Farley Chickson January 26, 2015 at 8:18 pm

Touchy? Na. I have a good life. Happily married, wonderful children and grandchildren that I love.A profitable small business, many friends and healthy.

I only wish you the best Boz. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be you.

Such stalking and harassing behavior, Mr.Martin. Shame on you.

Oh no, they’re banning smoking everywhere but smoking areas? Why are there smoking areas on state property?

“….What will the vast majority of state employees do now?….”

Take their phones into the johns, drop their tighty whities, take a 30 minute imaginary dump and surf the internet – at least twice daily – got to stay regular

However this will probably be nullified in the near future when the Gypsy Queen has electronic blocking screens established around every State Office. Of course this will not affect the prisons since it is illegal to block electronic signals from a predator who is using an illegal phone in his cell in violation of prison rules to groom his next victim upon his release

If that doesn’t work the Gypsy Queen can hire a Corps of Dookey Police to check behind every State employee who spends more than 69 seconds in the john – no crap-no job

The Japanese invented a flashing siren alarm that goes off when someone is in the bathroom too long. It is installed next to the entrance door, and it may be that only a supervisor can turn it off. It might be about 8 years ago I read an article about it.

The Germans invented a sensor to yell at people to pee sitting down if they lift up the seat.

“Hey, stand-peeing is not allowed here and will be punished with fines, so if you don’t want any trouble, you’d best sit down,”

Hmmm, that means that the sensor is only for women’s rooms because some of them actually pee standing up?

Joshua Jansen January 26, 2015 at 10:33 am

No, apparently the thing started because it is more sanitary (unless you factor in the increased cheek contact) and ladies in Germany are sick of cleaning toilets.

shifty henry January 26, 2015 at 10:59 am

Yes, I had a friend who had a sign in his guest bathroom that said to pee sitting down (in more proper language, of course).

Smirks January 26, 2015 at 10:21 am

Sirens going off while you take a dump? Throw in some caution tape and a biohazard sign and sounds like some epic bragging rights.

This is good security policy. Social media is crawling with things that we don’y want touching the computers doing our state’s business. Or purporting to do the state’s business anyway.

I think the ban is only on state owned computers, right? So state employees can still spend the same amount of time on Facebook as they do now, they will just use their phones. No extra bathroom break is required.

What really chaps my butt about the article from The State is that she called out procurement officials who actually do the right thing and have integrity. Their certifications and careers depend on it. They have lost about 90% of their workforce from low morale, non-competitive salaries, lack of executive support and more work than staff allows.

The people who have the ability to sway the purchasing is the higher level echelon who have their own motivations for laying down with a particular firm. Most state employees want to do a good job and strive to make the state a better place whilst taking furloughs, reduction in health care benefits with higher premiums and lack of increases which make them earn less now than they did five years ago.

Haley does not truly care for state employees and often brings up what the private sector deals with. They may deal with more but they are paid accordingly unlike state employees.

Policies like this are only needed when management is incapable of monitoring metrics to determine if employees are doing their jobs. I used to be a state employee, and I honestly feel sorry for those who still are. Employees are treated like McDonald’s cashiers while higher-ups pretend to be bright enough to lead the organization.
