By TAYLOR BROWN || So, when signing on to write for the infamous FITSNews, I was told “it would be nice to have a ‘Republican,’” so, now, here I am, the token Conservative Republican, who uses commas like a foreigner.

I like to think I was asked to write for my intellectual brilliance and political insight; however, it was probably my Twitter picture (@TaylahhKane) and my snarky Ebola tweets that did it (I’m still ready to use #EbolaInCola).

My background in politics goes back pretty far – back to elementary school, actually, when I did a commercial for Governor Jim Hodges … which remains one of my most embarrassing moments in the political world.  Since then, I have religiously followed elections and the news, and I am very proud to say that I would now NOT appear in a commercial for Hodges.

My platform: Abortion (the most important social issue to me)?  Pro-life.  Who is possibly more in need of rights than those who make up our humanity?  Who possibly needs greater protection than those who are incapable of speaking or standing up for their rights themselves?  Life is the first freedom – the first right from with the rest of our liberties flow, and is, thus, the most sacred.

Gay marriage? Get the government out of marriage entirely. Leave it up to the church. Death penalty? I once wrote an essay called “An Eye for an Eye: Why Criminals Should Die,” which, I think, speaks for itself.

Guns? The bigger, the better. Government? The smaller, the better. Favorite rapper? Nas. Raising taxes? Just don’t. Taxes in general? Flat tax. Capitalism? Love it. Welfare? Reform and privatize most of it.

Favorite person in the Senate? Tim Scott. Favorite person in the House? Trey Gowdy. Favorite person in SCOTUS? Clarence Thomas. Favorite person in the White House? HAHAHA.

Universal healthcare?  HELL NO. NSA?  Dangerous and slippery slope.  ISIS?  Evil.  Favorite song?  1812 Overture.  Favorite sport?  Is there any sport other than Gamecock football?  Political heroes?  The Iron Lady and Lee Atwater.  My best political experience?  Herman Cain once sang to me.

So here I am, love me or hate me, I don’t much care.

Taylor Brown is a 20-something Wofford College graduate who somehow got sucked into politics at an early age.  She is easily won over with Rush’s fast food, wine, and spirited political arguments.

Tell the truth Will, is this all part of some Republican outreach to women program?

I think black men are in since Tim Scott. Now it’s time to empower women. Now if these women would go beyond washing dishes, ironing clothes and baking stuff… Way to go, ladies. Break that glass ceiling.

Seriously though, Conservatives need more than Bachman or Palin. They need logic and reason. I’m sure there’s a woman out there that can fit that bill.

So this is the person who wrote that really brainless article about making my vote count? If this was an outreach to women who think, I don’t think anyone has to worry about its success. The only women she would appeal to are the Stepford wives and the Stepford wife wannabes who already vote for Republicans.
As for liking her or not liking her. That decision would require more effort than I am willing to expend on someone so painfully cliché.

Yeah, that happens a lot.

Talking about Faith Felice. She did a guest column on here, I guess you’d call it. Like her friend (and mine) Mande Wilkes, she apparently believes that because some women can break away from abusive husbands, all of them should be able to. Totally ignoring Stockholm Syndrome and virtually every psychological model of victims, ever. Hell, I admire what Faith has been able t accomplish, but not every woman in an abusive relationship is even sane enough to do it. That’s the part she doesn’t get. Abuse makes people crazy. Telling crazy people they need to be sane is not brilliant commentary, by any means.

Thought the Allman Brothers were originally a “frat band” because they played frat parties, though. Not because any of them were IN frats. Could be wrong. I’m a major fan. Met Duane and Gregg and the band when I was working stage crew at the festival in Love Valley, early ’70s, shared a joint with ’em. Then Gregg disappeared into their bus with the girl who had come on to me to get backstage. Didn’t even invite me in! Oh, well. Their road manager, Bunky Odum, was the son of my dad’s best friend back in NC, Bunk Odum. That’s the extent of my own disconnectedness to those guys. Like anybody cares. ;)

Reply
sparklecity November 5, 2014 at 4:11 pm

I do.
Playing for Frat parties is a paying gig – no shame in that. That’s how Barney Barnwell and “Plum Holler” got their comback here in Spartanburg area 10 – 15 years ago. Sadly, Barney passed two years ago, He was a mess!!!!
Duane got killed on October 29,1971 two days after I was inducted into the US Army and was shattered by the news (I had a week before I went to Ft. Jackson and heard about his death at the “Rare Earth” concert at Clemson.
I remember seeing their posters in October 1970 when they were playing the “Sitar” here in Spartanburg. You had to be 18 to get in and I was an obedient 17 year old at the time. Knowing what I know now, I would have fought, bribed or begged to get in.
To see The Allman Brothers play at the Sitar in 1970 is one of the things I would do if I had only 3 trips in a time machine

G.O.B. November 5, 2014 at 4:57 pm

Barney Barnwell played at our frat parties several times!

sparklecity November 5, 2014 at 9:58 pm

I’m sure he did.

I was a fan of Barney since 1979 when I saw him in Rockingham and didn’t know he was from Spartanburg till he sung “Campbeller” and I almost fell off of my bar stool.

Barney was a showman fer sure. I truly miss him

His annual “Moonshiners Reunion” concerts at Garmling and “Fingerville” were what legends are made of. The one in Gramling in 1980 was damn near Pagan!!!!

Those concerts are kinda like the “Blockhouse” near Tryon, The only time I have missed either since 1980 was because it was drill weekend or I was in a war somewhere…(and sometimes I got out of drill and made it up afterwards but ducking out of a war was something i could not swing)

And that’s a damn fact!!!!!

sparklecity November 5, 2014 at 10:31 pm

“Ducking out of a war was something I could not swing”

But Mark “Shirker” Sanfraud sure as hell did!!!!!!

And the “sheeple” voters of South Carolina rewarded him for it and still do by electing his sorry military duty shirking ass to Congress.

So much for patriotism in the “Sandlapper” state!!!!

Buz Martin November 5, 2014 at 8:55 pm

Speaking of bands that played frat parties, Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts were really an amazing phenomenon. They sometimes played wearing only jock straps. In front of co-eds! In the early ’60s! And I never heard of them getting in any trouble over that. Go figure, huh?

sparklecity November 5, 2014 at 9:44 pm

Come to think of it I recall Greg being interviewed on CBS’ “Sunday Morning’ a few years back and he said he was in medical school in California and was asked by his brother to come back east to join the band (which he did)

Well for starters, Nas’s best album was illmatic, which came out in 1994. Now assuming by “20-something” as your age, my guess is you are a solid 23 years old. Which means you were 3 years old when the best of Nas’s work came out. Nice try on urban musical pandering, to give yourself some lyrical gansta cred. You should have just stuck with Ice Cube or N.W.A.

Also favorite sport is Gamecock football? No Wofford Terrier love?

Anyway, NWA started in ’88, so what’s your point exactcly? Lame point for criticism. Her taking Herman Cain seriously might have been better.

But that’s not what he did.

According to the Spartanburg H/J he hightailed his car away from First Baptist Church on East Main in Spartanburg and went straight to the City of Spartanburg Police station without using his cell phone to call 911.

It takes at least 5 minutes to haul ass from the First Baptist Church to City Hall where the Police Station is located and by then the woman was blocks away.

For all his tough talk he ran away like the little girl he really is.

Gowdy’s a wimp if he does not have a cop or some other “Big Brother figure” around to back him up.

Once you leave to a safe place, what does it matter whether it is a block or five minutes away? Perhaps he should’ve called, but what does that have to do with courage?
You never should never confront an attacker if you and other possible victims can safely escape.
If he feels embarassed for leaving, I would rather live with his demons than yours.
I would not be so insulting of little girls. From your own experience, you must know that they often exhibit superior courage that adult men.

As a rule little girls have better survival instincts than a lot of grown men.

The point I’m making is for all his tough talking about how he faced killers when he was a solicitor and being a grand inquisitor at present, he choked under pressure and I wouldn’t want him having my back.

Enough said

Go ahead and eat the peanuts out of his stuff if you want to. I ain’t buying his BS. I’ve seen what he is like behind closed doors.

shifty henry November 6, 2014 at 5:27 pm

Having done ride-alongs with law enforcement in several cities I’ll share this — standard procedure in one city is that a cop NEVER turn his back to a female where possible, and I was told that went for me too. Females, even if unarmed or quiet, were too volatile.

I’ve known Taylor for many years. She’s a bright girl. She’s too good for this place.

A nice comment from a friend, but still a low bar to clear.

So, Manateee Mandeee must have gotten a real job?

Our Funding Editor has never worn lipstick, but she said the last few times she saw lipstick this sleazy, it was on her 1st husband’s thigh, on her 2nd husband’s navel, on her 3rd husband’s underwear and on the left cheek of her own arse after a drunken sorority reunion in 1922. Ohhh, she says those were the days.

Welcome Taylor, to sic(k) willie’s wanna-be porn site. You should fit right in.

Why does this make me think of The Story of Mary MacLane? But that was Vassar.

Nice to meet you…and thanks for succinctly illustrating your platform.

Rome is burning on account of your ilk as America’s once grand society is turned into a personalized neo-con hellscape of “I before you, except after me”.

Congrats.

I would most certainly allow her to strip me naked and lather me in barbecue sauce. Preferably mustard based.

“Who is possibly more in need of rights than those who make up our humanity?” What? What does that mean? Sic must be desperate.

Wow, this is perhaps one of the shallowest columns ever written … it essentially is one giant cliche. I know people think South Carolinians are morons, but c’mon Fits. Hire someone with a little intellectual curiosity.

AND SO HOW MANY UNWANTED CHILDREN HAVE YOU ADOPTED LATELY?

You hypocrite…
