Nikki Haley Busted Inflating Job Numbers … Again

BUT IS ANYBODY PAYING ATTENTION?

At this point, it’s a broken record … yet it remains to be seen whether South Carolinians are giving it a listen.

For a third time, a mainstream media outlet in the Palmetto State has caught S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley inflating her administration’s job numbers (for the previous two instances, click HERE and HERE).

This time it’s reporter Andrew Shain of The (Columbia, S.C.) State  newspaper, who is typically an obedient lap dog for Team Haley.

Not this week …

According to Shain, “only a little more than half of the jobs announced in 2011 and 2012 exist.”

Wait … what?

That’s right … for every two jobs Nikki Haley says she’s brought to the Palmetto State, one of them simply doesn’t exist.

According to Shain’s report, Haley’s oft-touted claim to have created 57,000 new jobs “includes businesses that never opened, or opened and then closed.”  Additionally, he exposed as false Haley’s claim to have presided over the “East Coast’s fastest-growing economy since 2011.”

South Carolina’s economy actually grew much slower than several of its East Coast peers in 2013 – ranking in the bottom fifteen states in the nation.

Game. Set. Match.  To the reporter …

What Shain neglects to mention (which is something this website has been ALL OVER) is the ever more bitter reality behind the Haley “economic miracle” – employment that’s simply not keeping pace with the rest of the country (or the state’s growing population).

Labor participation in South Carolina under the “Jobs Governor” peaked at 60.9 percent in June 2011 but has been falling precipitously ever since.  It currently sits at 57.9 – the sixth-lowest rate in America.

Shain also fails to point out the fact Haley’s “job growth” is almost exclusively government-subsidized – meaning existing consumers and businesses are being saddled with a higher tax burden.

In addition to its small labor force and anti-competitive tax rate, income levels in the Palmetto State aren’t growing.

Last week the U.S. Census Bureau published updated income estimates for 2013.  South Carolina ranked No. 44 out of fifty states with a median household income of $44,163 – well below the stagnant national rate of $52,250.

Shain does give Haley credit for her claim that “more South Carolinians have jobs than ever,” but he fails to point out there are more South Carolinians than ever  – and the jobs they’ve got simply aren’t making ends meet.

Seriously … how else does Haley explain the unchecked expansion of South Carolina’s dependency state under her reign?

Here’s the problem, though: Haley’s primary competition for the governor’s office on November 4 – Democrat Vincent Sheheen – has failed miserably to expose Haley’s record.  And even if he were to do so, there’s virtually nothing to distinguish his big government approach to “economic development” from hers.

Most frightening of all?  The vast majority of South Carolinians are simply too stupid to figure out they are being lied to – and taken advantage of – by Haley and her fellow “Republicans.”

Which is exactly where the state’s “GOP-controlled” government wants to keep them …

Sheheen may have his disadvantages, but he’s a much better choice than Haley. At least he’s pro better education in this state. The better educated the population, the larger the employment pool.

Also, a better educated the population, the less likely to vote republican.

Third generation of blacks since Civil Rights Act that have been enslaved into poverty by voting Democrat.
Might be time to try something different?

euwe max September 22, 2014 at 9:47 am

I agree, if breathing air hasn’t made you rich, why not try breathing chlorine? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is crazy.

Rocky September 22, 2014 at 4:25 pm

Or, third generation of blacks since Civil Rights Act have been enslaved by state laws in southern states.

The main problem is that it’s South Carolina. They love Republicans.

Unfortunately my county will not, Karolyn.

If Nikki Haley is reelected South Carolina voters deserve everything that happens to them for another 4 years. Lets see DOR Data breach, DSS Child Deaths, failed Cabinet Agencies, sold us out to Georgia…..etc imagine what another 4 years of her lies will bring?

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
South Carolina voters are obviously insane.

Most of us are thinking since we amended our State Constitution (which really explains the power moves in the SC Senate and House) in 2012, many are leaning to reelect Haley to fill in the next four years. 100% of the politics, investigations, and candidates running in 2014 is really folks setting up for the 2018 changes.

“Beginning with the general election of 2018, must Section 8 of Article IV of the Constitution of this State be amended to provide that the Lieutenant Governor must be elected jointly with the Governor in a manner prescribed by law; and upon the joint election to add Section 37 to Article III of the Constitution of this State to provide that the Senate shall elect from among the members thereof a President to preside over the Senate and to perform other duties as provided by law; to delete Sections 9 and 10 of Article IV of the Constitution of this State containing inconsistent provisions providing that the Lieutenant Governor is President of the Senate, ex officio, and while presiding in the Senate, has no vote, unless the Senate is equally divided; to amend Section 11 to provide that the Governor shall fill a vacancy in the Office of Lieutenant Governor by appointing a successor with the advice and consent of the Senate; and to amend Section 12 of Article IV of the Constitution of this State to conform appropriate references”

Sour grapes from Fits, “scandals” she inherited from a dysfunctional General Assembly, staffed with low info state workers only looking for a paycheck and underfunded, unsustainable pension and healthcare promises aside, Gov Haley has a great national persona to go along with her rapidly developing political skills. Yes, she is VP material.

LMAO! Fits calling the voters “stupid” while apparently campaigning for 0% Ervin and -3% T-Rav. That “investment” should produce about 5% between the two of em although one can’t help but root for T-Rav and his continuing road of recovery and redemption.

SC will re-elect this asshole. I am still debating between Ervin and Sheheen. The Dems deserved to lose state government in the 90s. They were crooked and took everyone for granted. Maybe the tide is turning because the Republicans are now the crooks and they take everyone for granted.

FITS, The State and Sheheen are desperate.

We have a GREAT piece up at SCPSD explaining The State’s campaign to try to put Sheheen in office (and pointing out a BIG Sheheen lie.)… It’s not working, but give them time.

Every county in the state that I know of has, at least, one weekly paper that covers every economic development announcement that happens.
All they would have to do is keep track of it on a low tech, old fashioned calendar and go back when any new announcements are made to keep track of what’s happening.
Instead, they forget about them as soon as they are made.
If the Commerce Dept., as a cabinet agency, has no vested interest in keeping an accurate count of what happens after a job announcement is made, someone needs to.

Thanks. The State has been reading my post here.

“And contrary to a Haley claim, South Carolina has not had the East Coast’s fastest-growing economy since 2011, according to revised federal data.” – The State

This claim was accurate according to GDP growth in 2012. Nearly a year later in 2014, 2012 data was revised down sharply. I stated that here several months ago. I would like to know when she last made that claim. If in the last several months then it wasn’t true.

“South Carolina’s economy actually grew much slower than several of its East Coast peers in 2013 – ranking in the bottom fifteen states in the nation.” – fitsnews

This is true but, there is a big difference in GDP growth on the East coast or east of the Mississippi River for that matter than west of the Mississippi river. Most of the worst states are in the East and South Carolina doesn’t look awful compared to those states.

Since Haley took office jobs have grown by 94,165, but the adult population has grown by 160,013. That ratio(58.8%) is only 0.9% above the labor participation rate which has fallen from 60.4% since Haley was elected. We are not even treading water, but this is the situation nationwide. This nations recovery is the worst ever and GDP growth since the peek of job loses is just barely beating the combined effect of inflation and population growth.

So Haley is caught in another lie. So what else is new? If you’re tired of the lies, the misrepresentations, the self-dealing, the incompetence in leadership, the stolen identities and the abused kids. . . .vote for someone else. It can’t get any worse. For me, I’m voting for Sheheen.

Maybe Haley can claim she has created jobs at SCE&G’s nuclear power plant in Jenkinsville? You know, the one where new reactors are being built? Did you know that most of those construction jobs are going to people who are not citizens of South Carolina? Yeppers. That’s right. Chicago Bridge & Iron is the main constractor. The majority of their workforce on the VC Summer Nuclear power plant are from other states. They pay them a per diem ($70.00 a day) to come to South Carolina from their home states to work here.
Its not fair to the citizens of South Carolina for these decent paying construction jobs to go to people who don’t even vote or pay much in the way of taxes here. That’s not right. Someone needs to pull SCE&G and their contractor down to the carpet and take them to the woodshed for a whoopin! The nerve of them, not hiring many locals to for a home project!! There ought to be a law!!!!

Yeah, she can claim she’s the jobs queen – but drive through Barnwell County, head on over to Florence – or Jasper County. People out there are poor and struggling. In SC. It’s a Great Day – to be poor in SC.

As a SC conservative, I hate to agree, but Haley is a waste. I will not be voting for her again. It’s really sad too, she has stayed the course of intolerance towards Native Americans, that Sanford layer out before her.

For the millionth time, it isn’t the Governor’s job to “create” jobs. Job creation will occur in SC if we have low taxes, a favorable business environment, decent public education, strong technical training, and less regulation. The Governor can actually facilitate that. Running around the world on junkets seeking to lure new employers to SC would be ok if it got real results, but it doesn’t. But I don’t see Sheheen or Ervin being any better at this that Mrs. Haley…
