COLUMBIA, S.C. (May 8, 2014) — University of South Carolina junior defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was selected by the Houston Texans with the first pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, held tonight at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
Clowney, a 6-5, 266-pound defensive end from Rock Hill, S.C., becomes the 12th first-round draft pick in school history and the seventh since 2000. He is just the second Gamecock taken with the first pick in the draft, joining 1980 Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers, who was selected by the New Orleans Saints with the first pick in the 1981 draft.
In three seasons in the Garnet and Black, Clowney recorded 47.0 tackles for loss and 24.0 sacks, ranking second and third respectively in school history. A two-time first-team All-American, Clowney finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy balloting following the 2012 campaign. He was named the All-America Player of the Year, presented by AT&T, as selected by the fans on ESPN.com and was the Hendricks Award winner as the nation’s top defensive end. During his sophomore season, he set school single-season records for sacks (13.0) and tackles for loss (23.5) while earning University of South Carolina Male Athlete of the Year accolades.
Gamecocks selected in the first round include:
Jadeveon Clowney – Houston Texans, 2014 (1st)
Stephon Gilmore – Buffalo Bills, 2012 (10th)
Melvin Ingram – San Diego Chargers, 2012 (18th)
Johnathan Joseph – Cincinnati Bengals, 2006 (24th)
Troy Williamson – Minnesota Vikings, 2005 (7th)
Dunta Robinson, Houston Texans, 2004 (10th)
John Abraham, New York Jets, 2000 (13th)
Ernest Dye, Phoenix Cardinals, 1993 (18th)
Sterling Sharpe, Green Bay Packers, 1988 (7th)
George Rogers, New Orleans Saints, 1981 (1st)
Willie Scott, Kansas City Chiefs, 1981 (14th)
Rick Sanford, New England Patriots, 1979 (25th)
At least one Gamecock has been selected in each of the past 13 NFL drafts. The second and third rounds of the 2014 NFL Draft will be held Friday, while rounds 4-7 will be conducted on Saturday.

Will RT be invited back to give us some more EXPERT FITS-level analysis????….LMAO…
You know you were hoping JD would be a Bust. That’s why you were so slow in reporting this…and what has to kill your cliché @$$…the next time SC can point to how it developed JD into a First Pick in 3 seasons…despite the haters and doubters, like FITS and RT…
Again: FITS: Quit cheaping out, and trying to write (or copy the punch-drunk thought of rest of the SC sports lemmings.)….. HIRE some TALENT and ABILITY!!!!!!
But if he hired some “TALENT and ABILITY” then you wouldn’t be able read it (it’s obvious can’t comprehend anything so I won’t mention that). Then you would only have the kids at your trailer park to yell at.
+3 — hahahaha
I just wished your mom a Happy Mother’s Day, Tango!
The best player in the draft went #1. The only people upset about this are the haters anyway. I have no problem with Sammy going 4th as it was deserved, just as Clowney #1 was very much deserved.
No shame in Sammy Watkins going fourth, they’re all going to make a lot more money than just about any of us anyways.
True, Smirks, good for JD and Sammy. The eyes of the football world were on our state in the first 30 minutes of the draft. I’d like to see Bruce find a home tonight if possible…he will be a steal for a team if drafted on Saturday. And of course any team that drafts Connor is getting a great competitor/person. Will be interested to see where Taj Boyd goes as well. We have been on the right side of this rivalry the best few years, but damn if there are not some awesome football players on both sides of the ball.
He’ll rank with Kenny Sims and Courtney Brown when it’s all over.
you’re wrong, but even if you’re not, they’ll still call him Mr. Clowney when he goes to the bank, ass hat
Just like Warren Sapp.
One thing you Clemson fans can never hold over him: a win against him.
When does his an candidate Taij Boyd get drafted? I wonder if Wake is in the NFC…he could light them up!
Without Elington’s pick, USC could have had the ultimate “One and Done” draft.
Good enough to beat ClemTech last five years.
Good enough to get a total of two players drafted.
But still good enough to beat ClemTech the last five years.
Good enough for time to enjoy fighting for a spot on the practice squad against the players who actually are good enough for the NFL. I hear Vic Hamilton is returning a car tomorrow.
Thankfully, it’s not necessary to have that many NFL prospects on a team to beat ClemTech the last five years.
Those up in Tennessee are saying something similar. I don’t think they had anyone drafted.
If USC sucks because they lost to Tennessee, what does that make the team that lost to the team that lost to Tennessee?
Don’t really care, but I understand to live in this state you either have to be a Dirtpecker or a Tater, if you say anything negative about one you’re automatically labeled the other.
Or you just have nothing better to do than bash one with you as you claim “unbiased” and unwanted opinion.
I have ties to a pharmaceutical company that produces blood pressure medication, simply stating the word “dirtpecker” in SC raises the stock value.
You are so right, my man. Much like watching my Clemson pals maintaining their outward composure when the conversation turns to Spurrier/Dabo, the last five games, six in a row is possible, how little it really matters to either team, it’s good for the state of SC, I’m sure Clem will win next year, we just got lucky, etc., etc. You know the guys, keeping the stiff upper lip and smiling but waiting to roll up their car windows and scream “FU Spurrier!!!”. You are so right.
No life what so ever.
Yet you still find time in your busy life to respond…
Nice try needle dick, but you are so pathetic you missed the point. The article is talking about Clowney and being picked number one, and you have nothing better to do than chime in off subject to make you feel better, just as you did about Lattimore on an article about Shaw, which had nothing to do about anything being talked about. I am replying in direct response to your dumbass comment. My response actually has purpose, yours has none, and that’s why it proves you have no life. You may try to say “haha I get gamecocks all mad for fun” but then why? So you can fill that empty void in your life that happens while your girl is sneaking out to blow me and laugh about how pathetic you are. We actually get a good chuckle out of it each time too. By the way tell her I have another pearl necklace for her. Don’t worry, I’ll have her home in time to spit the rest in your Corn Flakes. Bye Bye little bitch! Check and mate!!!!!
Why would you even care? No one was talking to you and you chime in with your anti-USC babble BS. You have nothing better to do I guess than act like Tango.
I like playing the golfs the most bestest.
