Earlier this week our founding editor developed a bit of a rapport with the Walmart corporate press office in Bentonville, Arkansas. Things got so polite he was even saying “please” and “thank you” as part of his efforts to determine whether the company was making good on its May 2011 promise to bring 4,000 new jobs to the Palmetto State by 2016.
(We’ve gotten several responses from the company on its progress but as of this writing we’re still waiting on a final answer to our question …)
And we may be waiting a long time …
That’s because our founding editor’s wife – the lovely Prussian warlord Mrs. Sic Willie – went on an anti-Walmart rant on her Facebook page this week.
Here in its unfiltered glory is the recap of her recent retail experience:
Observations while at Walmart: 1) I HATE Walmart. I don’t know why I go there. I feel this way every time. 2) they have a million lanes, but only two people working at the registers. 3) It must have been mullet night this evening. Is there a discount for that? 4) Their prices stink compared to other grocery stores and even Target. 5) I must now shower and sanitize my clothes and shoes because the whole place is disgusting. Ugh. I have plenty more, but not enough energy.
Wow,baby … don’t hold back!
Anyway, Walmart is already at war with one tough woman (Bloomberg reporter Renee Dudley) … now it’s got Mrs. Sic on its case?

Walmart’s prices aren’t bad versus items in grocery stores that aren’t on sale, but grocery store sales are awesome. I hate shopping there for many reasons, but it is hard to refuse a whole dollar less on steak marinade or other items when the grocery stores only put them on sale like once in a blue moon.
Also, for the love of all that is holy, do NOT buy meat from Walmart. Just don’t. I can tell you from personal experience (quite a long time ago) and from horror stories I’ve read on the Internet. You have been warned. Produce probably isn’t a good idea either.
The produce sections are so dirty. But it is the checkout that kills me, if you have frozen food you will never get out of there before the ice cream melts. Gotta love the many walmart’s that have some sort of alarm going off all the time, it is a constant piercing sound and it never turns off, must be a way to get people out of the store faster. The Kroger on Forest Drive and Beltline has better canned food prices, but you have to sort through the cans to be sure they aren’t dented, and perhaps a full third are dented. If you are a big coffee drinker, the World Market has better coffee than Starbucks for less and their coffee club gets you discounts and free bags.
But why haven’t they hired people? They clearly have a strategy of employing the least amount of folks possible. Did the deal with Olympia put a dent in the number of jobs they were going to bring? How many young people could be manning those check outs? For 29 hours a week or less…
You have to admit that Walmart’s pricing on Bryers Ice Cream wipes out everyone on a “regular” basis.
Every now and then the wife finds(Kroger?) doing a 2 for 1…but in Choc and Vanilla Walmart is stupid cheap.

Ms. Sic has it right. I had the honor last week of buying groceries there. I hate buying groceries there.
The checkout lanes are a huge joke on us. There must be 40 lanes, maybe 10 were manned and 4 of those were the 10 or less lanes. Those of us who had a lot of groceries had to wait… and wait… and wait, then you have those dudes/dudettes who come up behind you with a couple of items expecting you to let them in front of you. What a pain in the ass.
They seemed to have gotten a little better at some stores, but has anyone else noticed how while many of their register clerks (normal lanes) seem to have consumed a bottle of Nyquil before going on duty, the ones manning the express checkout lanes apparently were required to down about four bottles of Nyquil prior to going on duty? Try to buy locally. However since I am on a fixed income find it hard to turn down 40% to 50% savings on items I use on a weekly basis
The Walmart in Ballentine is convenient, clean, well stocked and the staff for the most part are courteous and helpful
As for letting someone with a few items “get in front of me” I have my standards If the individual is less than chunky and butt nakkied, she can push me out of the way. If the individual is not as described as above, I usually tell them to kiss my lily white prune ass
Of course if I don’t want to shop at Walmart, I have discovered over the years that I can just as easily steer my car over to BiLo or Dollar General. Always amazed at those who aren’t aware shopping at Walmart is something they choose to do rather than something they have to do

Walmart in Ballentine is quite nice. It is the complete exception to the rule OWB, I agree.
I am slightly closer to Harbison, which I refer to as “Ghetto Walmart” to the kids(I have funny names for all the local places…their fav: “Stinky Lizard”, or commonly knows and Lizard’s Thicket)…but many times make the trip to “Yuppie Walmart” because the extra 5 min drive is worth it.
Walmart is always an interesting exercise, I agree with Mrs. Sic in some regards…some of their prices are not so good.
They operate under the loss-leader model like most other outfits.
But then again, my shopping cart doesn’t resemble 99% of those shopping there. Fish oil, organic eggs/milk, gluten free noodles, certain vegetables(we buy organic in some types), jarred Mediterranean olives, etc.
I get a few things at Aldi’s, their fruit/vegtables are FAR less expensive, as is bottled water….and then we fill some gaps at Krogers.
Really, if you want to save money and still eat well you have to get real detailed about it.
Earth Fare for the most part is a total scam, as is Whole Foods. You can eat organic without them and their stupid prices.
I used to like the convenience of having Ghetto Walmart change my oil in certain vehicles while I was shopping with the kids…but they’ve managed to even somehow screw that up so I have local mechs do that now when I’m too busy.
I’m the grocery shopper in my family. I noticed long ago that WalMart’s prices are too high — considering their unrelenting ad campaigns touting their “deals.” Ingles and Bi-Lo are significantly cheaper on most items, with Ingles ALWAYS having cheaper beer than Walmart or Bi-Lo (gotta keep the priorities straight!). I too have picked-up on the dozens of check-out aisles and only two open problem. I think that ticks-off customers waiting in line. Another observation: too many shelves unstocked or in need of replenishment.

Yes, your input and observations concerning Wal-Mart naturally hit certain notes with everyone around your “kingdom”. The question is…..do you understand how a queen gets a store to service all consumers and taxpayers in a “pro-active” way. Your “king” has taken time to notice a “queen’s” move……..so what instructions do your “pawns” have to reveal a “check” position.
Mrs. Willie….if you think you were “mad” at Wal-Mart and displayed “hate”, then we wonder what look you have for Sic when you realize that he posted a picture with you wearing a color other than black or red. Why would anyone go to Walmart? That place is disgusting and attracts the dregs of society. I take my money to Publix and Target. It may cost a little more but the service is unparalleled.
The men’s room.Publix and Target have OK men’s rooms,but the K Mart on Charleston Hwy is unbeatable.

You’ve mentioned this problem before. Exactly what is happening? There may be a simple solution. Several of my problems on this site have been solved by other commentators.

The main reason I’ve gone to Wal-Mart is convenience and diversity. You can’t go to Bi-Lo and buy a hammer, toys, groceries, and some car cleaning supplies. Even if you can find some of the non-grocery items at Bi-Lo, they’re way over priced and there’s only one brand available. Target is close to Wal-Mart in terms of convenience, but Target’s grocery department is lacking compared to Wal-Marts. So it’s either go to Bi-Lo for grocery items and then Target for non-grocery items, or just go to Wal-mart. Most will choose to go just to one place, in spite of the other difficulties you face going there.
