We have no problem with U.S. Senate intern Byron Thomas’ loving all over the Confederate flag. Or his rationalization of slavery. It’s all a little weird considering he’s black, but whatever: Flags and skin color are two things we try to ignore whenever possible.
So more power to him … and more power to U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) for giving the kid a chance.
Our beef with Thomas? His “slavish” devotion to the Evil Empire currently masquerading as our country, which he expressed shortly after arriving at the seat of the empire earlier this year.
“I’ve only been here for 8 days but I can tell that something is wrong (in my opinion),” Thomas wrote in a widely circulated email to his fellow interns on Capitol Hill.
Wait … it took Holmes eight days to figure out something is wrong in Washington, D.C.?
Hmmmm …
Anyway … stoking Thomas’ ire was the failure of his colleagues to say the Pledge of Allegiance each day upon arriving at the office.
“We have American flags in front of every room, but I’ve never seen anyone take the time to proudly say the Pledge of Allegiance,” he wrote. “Truly ask yourself, when was the last time you put your hand on your heart and said the Pledge of Allegiance. Now, I’m not attacking anybody because it’s your freedom and right to not say it but I’m assuming everyone that’s working up here loves this awesome country. Are we that busy that we can’t take a minute to show some pride and respect for our country? I say it every morning before I walk in because America’s always on my mind.”

“All I want is for our generation to show that we’re united and that we’re going to stand together,” Thomas added in his email. “We’ll always be One Nation, Under God.”
Really? For the sake of our generation, Thomas’ generation and our kids’ generation let’s hope that’s not the case ….
In fact wouldn’t such an ardent admirer of the Confederacy be supportive of secession? Who knows … although last time we checked it wasn’t the notion of secession that was morally wrong, it was the liberty-depriving racism which served as the elemental justification for its most recent attempt.
Secession itself is patriotic … in fact it says so right there in the American Declaration of Independence.

I’m sure a lot of staffers are excited about their position and wants to serve the country properly, but a lot of them probably share their congressman’s sentiment about getting rich.
