The federal government’s latest “Farm Bill” passed the U.S. Senate earlier this week, with eighteen “Republicans” joining Democrats in approving the 1,102 page, $963 billion monstrosity. Even more depressing, a $950 billion version of this legislation already has the support of fiscally liberal U.S. House Speaker John Boehner.
Which means we could be looking at another Democrat-driven victory in the so-called “GOP-controlled” U.S. House of Representatives.
Wait … whatever happened to the party of “less government” in Washington, D.C.?
Good question …
This “Farm Bill” is a two-pronged perpetuation of America’s dependence economy, in which government handouts (paid for with borrowed money) incentivize distorted markets and a lack of competition and productivity. The vast majority of this appropriation – roughly 80 percent – will go to pay for the government’s out-of-control food stamp program. The rest will go to fund farm subsidies which – as we’ve pointed out previously – raise prices on consumers while simultaneously providing larger farms with an unfair competitive advantage over their smaller rivals.
Neither of these programs represent core functions of government, and neither serves the best interests of the American people. Both should be done away with – along with the sprawling federal bureaucracies which administer them.
Unfortunately, a “Republican-controlled” chamber may not even be able to cut these programs – all thanks to GOP “leaders” like Boehner who would rather cut and run than show so much as an ounce of political courage.
In the U.S. Senate, several familiar fiscal liberals helped secure passage of this bill – including U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham (RINO-S.C.), Lamar Alexander (RINO-Tennessee) and Saxby Chambliss (RINO-Georgia). To his credit, U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) was one of the twenty-seven members who stood his ground and voted against it.

The two states that have recovered the most since the Bush recession are Michigan and Ohio, and Florida is coming on strong.
Also you forgot to mention that all those states you think are doing so well are the poorest, dumbest, and least healthy states in the country. Of course they are Republican dominated and Republicans like it that way, so maybe they are achieving their goals.

I think its funny how both of you guys seem to think there is a major difference in the policies of Bush and Obama.
Fitz clearly did not grow up on a farm. Agricultural products are the single largest export this country has. Our balance of trade would be atrocious without it. Farmers must not only deal with the vicissitudes of the economy but the weather as well. And without these subsidies and guarantees which primarily smooth out the bad years and the good ones, the concept of the family farm could no longer exist. Farmers work very hard for only a 3-4% annual return on their investment. I don’t know too many rich ones. Do your homework. This is not only a farm issue, it is a national security and economic issue. We’ve exported most of our manufacturing jobs. You want to outsource our food production as well? You want to see high food prices? Let’s start importing this stuff and see what happens. This mindless displacement of economics with political ideology is beginning to make me tired. What did they teach you in school? Ask your dad about this…he can set you straight.
Gee, you don’t know to many rich ones? How about Monsanto, DuPont, Archer Daniels Midland Group. Those are just the easy ones for the vegans.
These are large companies that, among other things, deal in agricultural supplies and commodities. They are not farmers. Nobody suggests agriculture is not big business–it is one of the biggest in the USA. I am talking about individual farmers, those who actually get their hands dirty raising crops. I know many farmers and grew up on a farm in a farming community. With few exceptions, I repeat, I don’t know too (note the extra “o.”) many rich ones.
