As this website predicted nearly two months ago, S.C. Rep. Bakari Sellers (D-Bamberg) will seek the office of Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina in 2014.

Sellers will make the announcement official this Thursday, according to The Patch network of websites. His decision sets up an interesting potential battle for this part-time, largely ceremonial post – which is responsible for overseeing deliberations in the State Senate.

In one corner we have Sellers, the small town son of a civil rights pioneer. In the other corner we have incumbent Glenn McConnell – a “Republican” lawmaker who likes to dress up as a Confederate General (with his slaves in tow).

Talk about a study in contrasts …

Since his election to the S.C. House at the age of 22, Sellers has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in Democratic politics – a substantive, policy-oriented lawmaker who has impressed us with his ability to get to the right of fiscally liberal “Republicans” on several issues.

It shouldn’t be too hard for him to get to the right of McConnell, who has presided over rampant government growth (including millions of tax dollars spent on his obsession with Confederate artifacts).

Can Sellers win? It won’t be easy. The “Republican” establishment is likely to rally around McConnell – who is advised by the powerful Richard Quinn and Associates consulting empire (which represents fellow “Republicans in Name Only” like U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham and liberal S.C. Senate president John Courson).

Still, McConnell has serious vulnerabilities on taxpayer issues … and Sellers strikes us as the sort of candidate who is keenly aware of what he needs to do to exploit those openings.

Democrats in South Carolina desperately need fresh blood in 2014 – candidates who are willing to stake out substantive ideological ground that puts them to the right of free-spending status quo “Republicans.”

If Sellers can continue to chart his political path along those lines (rather than following S.C. Sen. Vincent Sheheen headlong over the cliff of far left liberal orthodoxy), he might have a chance against a candidate as flawed as McConnell.

Annnnd the man-love on Bakari Sellers continues. What about Sellers’ support for freedom-killer, tyrannical Barack Obama? Doesn’t that make him an enemy of freedom and the constitution and sound money and America and the flag and puppies? Hypocrisy.

Seriously. I’d ask if Sellers has embarrassing pictures of you, but then I remembered you have no capacity for feeling shame.

I’m glad that someone has the guts to stand up and expose this fraud who will get no vote from me.

“OVERSEEING” —– ????
It would help if you could teach your interns the proper method of copy & paste, plus proofreading.

Proofreading? If SpellCheck doesn’t catch it, it’s all good.

I am not a fan of self-serving young people in politics who merely trade on their family name… and that’s true whether the name is Sellers, Coble, Kennedy or Bush. Do something outside of politics first, experience success and failure, then come ask me for my vote.

That’s the damn truth, Yel. Especialy with Coble’s kid who thought that having that last name qualified him to be on Council even though he was in law school and 22 or so. Same goes with that guy on Council who used his middle name (DeQuincey) in all of his signs so dumbasses would vote for him based on that.

Newman was a little young (27 yo) when he first ran for office but at least he had already completed law school and worked for a couple of years. I doubt that he would have run then if EW Cromartie hadn’t vacated his seat on council.

Kirkman Finlay is another one but again, at least he managed his family business for several years before running for city council.

sure….a couple of failed restaurants makes Kirkman Finlay qualified….? Not so much. While I completely agree that career politicians and resulting family aristocracies are dangerous, in this case it is really just a red herring. Is the guy good enough or no?

Failed restaurants are the norm. He also has a couple of successful ones. The point was that at least the guy tried to do something outside of politics before running for office.
Bakari Sellers may be a brilliant politician and a helluva guy but I wouldn’t vote for him because a 28 year old career politician has limited perspective and has no business governing.

FITS, you idiiot…I thought this young man was going up against Clyburn. In that Congessional district, where the vote is based on Race-Hate, I’m not sure he would have had a chance, unless he preaches more bitterness and hate than Clyburn (and that’s hard)…but he would actually be an IMPROVEMENT…Sadly: Ignorant voters cling to their poverty that the democrats like Clyburn deliver…

Of course Phat, institutional democrats, like Clyburn, cling to gerrymandered, race-hate seats like liberals cling to their myths and lies…Affirmative Action make them…that’s why they have no EARNED character…

Also: Let me guess: FITS ‘LIKES’ Bakari…

Affirmative Action is illegal. If african americans are more successful than you, you’ve got one thing to blame: the countless hourse you waste posting on FITS to no avail.

I see the RACIST, Hate-monger contingent is alive and well on FITS…

You kill any white people today..@$$hole…or did you and your sissy little coffee-house buddies just sit around and pontificate about your liberal-redneck hatred all day…???

So you finally found all the racist and hate-mongering rednecks on FITS? And I almost thought you didn’t have a mirror in your house.

Another of the ‘Best and Brightest’ of the leftwing. Or should I say another lockstep, cliche, who has to co-opt and regurgitate what I tell him, because he’s too dull to think of something himself… Congrats. You’re one of many, who are all just alike…

Alexander_Ubertramp June 7, 2013 at 4:32 am

Truly profound. Not sure what I have said that makes me left wing unless disagreeing with your not-so-subtle racist diatribe makes me a card carrying democrat. I’m not thrilled about Bakari and I’m not a huge fan of capt. Confederate either. What’s your solution oh wise one?

McConnell is lining up votes to be the next chief justice. That position has infiinitely more power and is solid for ten years. And just ask Queen Jean if you can pretty much do anything you want in the position.

Yawsa June 5, 2013 at 12:00 am

That would make McConnell the state’s first closet chief justice.

But if he loses to this black guy, he’d presumably move back to Charleston and continue living with his Mama, brother and sister.

If so, I think he’d be out of the loop and legislators would — hopefully — ignore the corrupt bastard.

Bakari, I thought you were smart. Your only chance at stardom is if you wait for Clyburn to retire or keel over. McConnell is somebody that nobody wants to face. McConnell will beat Bakari into a pulp.

Well it looks like it’ll be time again for the black churches to tune up their buses and organize where the congregational members will be required to report to so they can be taken to their poll to vote for Sellers.
