“SC Senate Screws Kids…Again”. I assume the first time was when they voted against expanding Medicaid to cover those whose families could not afford health care insurance.

It somehow renews my faith in humanity to see that Uncle Howie hasn’t bought everyone off…I’m sure he’s working on it, though.
If the proponents of this legislation would get serious about accountability and transparency, maybe they’d get a little more traction. As it is, this legislation is a government handout, with no accountability or transparency required, to the nation’s worst private schools. (I thought conservatives didn’t approve of government handouts.)
Put language in this legislation that holds private schools to the same rigorous accountability and transparency requirements of public schools, and maybe this legislation won’t be such an object of ridicule. But it’s never been about accountability and transparency.
Exactly, put some language in the bill to hold any private school that accepts the money to the same standards, laws and regulations that a public school must follow. Absent this the gov would be “picking winners and losers in the marketplace” eh Will??
Actually I’d recommend considering the exact opposite … why don’t we empower the parents/students with 100% choice (public school choice as well as private school choice) and then we can unburden the public schools from all the ridiculous regulations as the ultimate “regulator” will be the parents/students deciding which school is best for them/their child. The regulations (the biggest reason they are failing) we have saddled/shackled the public schools with is frankly because parents don’t have choice.

You don’t need over-burdensome regulations if you have “choice”. Parents and students can vote with their feet if the independent school of their choice is not providing the education the parents want for their child. Empower parents through “choice” seems reasonable to me.

Regardless of issues with a sad public school system, still not a fan of tax breaks for people sending their kids to Christ Church, Bishop England, Cardinal Newman, St. Joes, etc.
Actually taxpayers (and the public schools) financially benefit from this legislation. Taxpayers (Federal, State & Local) pay approximately $10,000 / year / student to send kids to public school. Giving someone a net $280 tax benefit ($4,000 x 7% tax rate = $280 savings) to taking a kid OUT of the public school system only saves taxpayers and makes the public school classes smaller. A $6 BILLION state school budget and the primary issue the quasi-unions care about is fighting a $32 million school choice bill. When did freedom of choice become a bad thing?

This is a give away program. This current legislation is not the goal, its the foot in the door. It starts as, oh its only a few million dollars. Then suddenly lets make it a tax credit and it becomes hundreds of millions of dollars. Then lets increase the tax credit. Suddenly the taxpayers are paying for the entire private school system, but only for the people who could afford it anyway. All with not one ounce of control over who gets into these schools. Which is great for the parents of kids in Private school, but no one else.

The only way that I would support “school vouchers” would be if those without children in the school system get a larger tax credit or deduction. It only makes sense since those aren’t using the education system.

It’s kind of like mandatory car insurance. If you have an accident and 1. Don’t tell the police, and 2. Don’t file a claim, and 3. The other party does not file a claim then you make the repairs for $150 and everyone is happy (except your wallet). On the other hand, if the insurance company finds out you had the accident, claim or no, they triple your annual rates until such time that you have paid them back 200% + and everyone ELSE is happy.
