SCDEW: The More Things Change

Less than two weeks after S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley decided to take another stab at running a “workforce agency,” the incompetent baboons … err, buffoons in charge of her S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW) were up to their old tricks again.

Leaders at this inept agency – which doles out millions of dollars in improper unemployment benefits each year – are soaking up the sunshine at yet another taxpayer-funded “conference.” This month’s venue of choice? The lovely Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa.

“Here, you can nourish your soul on the sandy beaches of Hilton Head Island’s lowcountry coast as you feel the warm ocean breezes, satisfy your shopping sweet tooth with unique boutique shops and outlet retailers nearby, or get on a bike and breathe in the area’s rich history and unparalleled natural surroundings,” the resort’s website boasts.

Sounds nice …

Attending this month’s event? “State and local workforce investment board members, elected officials, workforce professionals, as well as representatives of economic development and community-based organizations,” a brochure produced by SCDEW states.

Obviously course sun and fun on YOUR dime is nothing new for SCDEW bureaucrats. Last year, in the midst of multiple rounds of layoffs, agency leaders took time to relax at Kingston Plantation in Myrtle Beach, S.C. and to play some golf at the Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club.

Again … must be nice.

Well … unless you’re one of the Palmetto State businesses and individual South Carolina taxpayers getting the bill for this agency’s incompetence.

“you can nourish your soul by sucking the life out of what’s left of business and their employees with an aperitif of delicious liquefied misery being slurped up from the remnants of your newly created zombies”

Straight out of the SCDEW memo, I swear. They lifted the “nourish” line out of the Westin brochure, because we know there isn’t a creative soul in the bunch.

These conferences (if they are even necessary) should be held in a central location if at all possible (i.e. Columbia) and go to the lowest bidder, no frills, and if you’re within an hour drive, no room.

Of course, a lot of South Carolinians complain about not having a “strong governor” that they can “hold accountable.” Finally, an agency that Haley should have control over, and she’s not saving our tax dollars like she promised? She fucks up with DoR letting our SS numbers get stolen? She gets DHEC to clear Georgia for dredging and dumping on our land in a spot we could build a port? Wow, I’m sure SC will completely hold her accountable in 2014!

*silently bets all-in on Haley reelection by a straight-ticket voter landslide*

State law requires bids on things like this, the Westin just happened to be the lowest bid. A

So nice to know that I am getting laid off while they take lavish trips. I guess my salary is how they paid for it!

At their worst, meetings can be both useless and mind-numbing. It calls to mind an observation made in that endless font of wise management advice, the comic strip Dilbert: “There is no specific agenda for this meeting. As usual, we’ll just make unrelated emotional statements about things which bother us.”

. . .

Third, pay close attention to who is invited and, for goodness’ sake, avoid making meetings so large that it feels you should have rented an amphitheater. During my last tour as secretary of defense, I found it not uncommon to walk into meetings in the White House Situation Room and see more than a dozen people packed in. In previous administrations, a single note-taker sufficed.

We should all listen to Jock Stender and we would be better off. He calls it like he sees it.

SCDEW Field Staff were not invited to this. We are too busy looking for jobs outside of the Agency, as we (Field Staff) are all laid off next month. Good luck getting help in a SC Works Center after that, South Carolina.
