South Carolina Vs. Maryland

Earlier this week, the S.C. Democratic Party (SCDP) sent out a press release comparing Maryland and South Carolina using statistics which (as you might expect) were less than favorable to the Palmetto State.

Why did they do that? Because Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is the featured speaker at some big Democratic “issues conference” being held this weekend in the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Among the stats included in the Democratic release? Maryland’s unemployment rate is 6.2 percent (20th highest in the nation) while South Carolina’s is 8.7 percent (42nd highest in the nation). Maryland’s government-run K-12 education system has been ranked “best in the nation” five years in a row, while South Carolina’s SAT scores have declined for five years running (and currently rank next-to-last nationally). Maryland has kept higher ed tuition increases at just 3 percent over the last five years – South Carolina has not.

And on and on … all part of an effort to paint S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley as an ineffective chief executive (which let’s face it, isn’t a difficult picture to paint).

“The facts speak for themselves on which governor has better served the people of their state and Governor Haley has much she could learn from Maryland’s success,” SCDP spokeswoman Kristen Sosanie said.

Republicans (in Maryland and South Carolina) fired back.

“O’Malley has left Maryland in the throws of economic distress – killing jobs and raising taxes,” SCGOP chairman Chad Connelly said. “Their left wing policies will kill the economic growth and prosperity Palmetto State voters want.”

Hmmmm … “in the throws?”

So which party hack is correct?

Neither, really. Democrats claim higher education costs in South Carolina are going up because the state hasn’t adequately funded its government-run colleges and universities – which is ridiculous. The truth is our state has thirty-three taxpayer funded institutions at more than eighty campus locations – far too large a system for a state this small.

That’s why tuition is soaring.

Of course Connelly is every bit as full of it … failing to mention how Haley has backed plenty of “left wing policies” herself.

So … which state is better off?

To the poll!

Higher education costs are higher because we fund public universities less AND because our public universities operate on a larger budget. Honestly, a good bit of this happened under Sanford.

Maryland is better off mostly because it has a better economic engine than SC, which lets them retain a more skilled workforce, and a better education system, which helps keep up a more skilled workforce. Compare Baltimore to Columbia. Compare Bethesda to Greenville. Apples and oranges.

A better question to ask is if this state is even better off than Mississippi anymore.

“Honestly, a good bit of this happened under Sanford.”

You may be right on this, but I have never seen any statistics showing it. Got any?

“Compare Baltimore to Columbia. Compare Bethesda to Greenville. Apples and oranges.”

I think we are in agreement on that. No comparison between ANY parts of the two states. Maryland is home to about half the jobs created by the larger than normal government being created, and by the military industrial complex.

I like you r posts Smirks, you are one of the few here than refrains from name calling, which squelches open debate.

As a life long Marylander, the problem we have is a roaring rumbling earthquake under out economic system that none of the DEMs want to acknowledge. You have a small percentage of the state paying the majority of the bills, and you have areas like Baltimore City and vast swaths of Prince Georges County receiving so many entitlement programs that when election time arrives? They vote for whoever will maintain and expand entitlements. I am headed for South Carolina in 6 years. The taxation is lower, the cost of living is lower, crime is lower. As for education? We have a top system where the majority of students in Baltimore City and Prince Georges are essentially dumb as stumps. Drop out rates are still historically high and graduating, while to some degree illiterate, is common place. O’Money has his eye to the greater prize. He never wanted to be Mayor or Governor. He has an eye to the White House and this is why he engages in all this nonsense when we have serious financial issues in this state that have gone under the radar for some time. Every time he imposes a new tax or raises one is because we are in trouble, albeit silent trouble. Time to see the money with your mind and not your eyes. Even Peter Franchot is disgusted with him.

2. In 2010, Republicans had a net gain of 43 elected positions at the local and legislative levels.
3. Maryland has 12 counties with a voter registration majority and over 1,000,000 registered Republicans statewide.
4. There are 15 county governments with a Republican majority.

Thus why when my financial plan is done in 6 years I am headed for South Carolina. People can say what they want about SC, but the fact of the matter remains that the standard of living is better and the rate of taxation is lower. Maryland is taxing it’s higher earning citizens out the door. I won’t spend much longer supporting the slackers and entitlement bas&ards in this state. DEMs get re-elected pulling money out of my pocket so Stinky and Boo Boo will vote for them. Then DEMs get rich from being in office. Bye Bye Maryland! No more of my financial pie!

It definitely has it’s issues with taxes and demonazis. O’Malley is just as bad as Haley. But to call it shithole, clearly you are way off fucking base. That is NOT to say that there are not good people in the rest of the state of South Carolina (there are good people everywhere in this great country – even Fayetteville, NC) but I have absolutely no connection/use with the rest of South Carolina past Greenville County. My loyality is Greenville NORTH to Charlotte and beyond along the I-85 corriidor to its termination south of Richmond, Virginia. Along with the I-77 corridor to my home state of West Vriginia

Richmond to Atlanta & north on I-77 is what I relate to (basically the Piedmont & mountain regions).
