After a sudden spike toward the end of February, gas prices in South Carolina have leveled off a bit in March.
According to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the Palmetto State is $3.47 – a thirteen-cent decrease from last month’s peak. That’s the fifth-lowest average price in the nation – although as we’ve noted in numerous previous posts that ranking is skewed.
How so? Well, because South Carolinians are dirt poor they pay a disproportionately higher percentage of their income on fuel costs – second only to Mississippi, in fact.
So yeah … cheap gas isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be.
Nonetheless, “Republicans” in the S.C. General Assembly want to impose a massive 30 percent increase in the state’s gas tax – and then lock in annual tax hikes moving forward.
Naturally we are adamantly opposed to such an increase …
In fact, one way to reduce the price of a gallon of gas would be if the federal government ended its subsidization of the ethanol fuel industry – which adds an extra dime per gallon to motorists’ costs. Of course “Republicans” in Washington, D.C. are slaves to the ethanol lobby every bit as much as Democrats … which means it’s highly unlikely we’re going to see relief on that front.

Very misleading statistic. While 30% is accurate to describe the tax hike, what you don’t bother mentioning is the fact that it’s a very reasonable five cent (a nickel) raise on a tax that has not been adjusted for inflation since 1987. You’re scare-mongering, FITS. Most consumers see gas prices jump up and down 15 cents per week, that they wouldn’t even realize when the gas tax would go into effect. How is it fiscally conservative to be unable to maintain existing roadways on our current budget? Isn’t road maintenance a core aspect of state governance, unlike superfluous crap?

How is it fiscally sound to justify raising a tax so an agency can cover doings its job because it is too busy entertaining nonsense ideas like I-73 to put its current budget to good use?
I’m sure if we gutted useless projects and focused the agency better, at the very least we could knock a 5 cent tax increase down to a 1-2 cent tax increase. No point in giving an agency that can’t keep its nose clean more money to blow.
If you’ve seen my other posts Smirks, I’ve said repeatedly that I am against these boondoggles and that I would only support a gas tax increase only if it goes for existing maintenance. I should’ve elaborated more in my response.
I-73 is a perfect example of why giving this group of “spend more because you can” bureaucrats more money is a bad idea. Using the GSX corridor (501 and 38) would cut the build time by 80-90%, cut the cost by 80% and would be the equivalent in terms of travel time. With the money they save maybe they could fix the freaking bridges.

Increases, increases and more increases thats all we hear about,From what i see in my part of S.C. they could just shut down D.O.T for what they are doing. And gas went up 70 cents a gallon and now came down about 15 or 20 cents a gallon , What a deal ! So what, it will go back up another 40 or 50 cents a gallon by summer. Just another way to make you think your getting a deal. And until we get someone in these public offices that know how to and where to spend money,no more tax increases of any kind!Just seen on the news, Duke wants another 15% increase.The poor folks don’t stand a chance anymore,we are getting gouged to death! But I agree that’s a pretty rearend!
