“SING FOR YOUR SUPPER?”

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley wants a portion of the Palmetto State’s food stamp population to “sing for their supper.” Or at least that’s what she wants us to think …

Haley’s as-yet-unannounced proposal – dubbed “SNAP to Work” – would require beneficiaries of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to find jobs if they wish to continue receiving these benefits. Or at least those beneficiaries residing in sixteen of South Carolina’s forty-six counties.

Sound good? Of course it does. It’s supposed to. But here’s our question: If these people find jobs, why would they still need food stamps?

Hmmmmm …

While you’re pondering, here’s another important question: Who’s paying for these new jobs? Because a lot of the “work” created by various government “welfare-to-work” programs is subsidized by taxpayers.

Haley’s latest proposal is one of several questionable initiatives being run out of her two least credible cabinet agencies – the S.C. Department of Social Services (SCDSS) and the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW). In fact this program sounds eerily similar to the illusory “welfare to work” gains Haley touted last fall in connection with SCDSS’ “Family Independence Program.”

Obviously we’ll wait to see the fine print from Haley’s plan, but our guess is the only people “singing for these suppers” will be taxpayers …

Wonder how the Original Six Foundation will be tied in?

Don’t know. But find it very odd that the contact phone # for the foundation is a land line based in Bamberg and a physical address in Columbia.

Hired by Wal-mart…….would still qualify for SNAP….WM has special Human Resource offices to “advise” new hires how to apply for SNAP, Housing, Medicaid/medicare, and every other government program available.

Sic, you obviously have not looked around the small towns of SC to see how people live (barely) on minimum wage…….SNAP helps a little.

Yep. Knew a few cashiers who had food stamps back when I worked at the grocery store. Having a job doesn’t mean you don’t get and/or need food stamps.

Surprised Walmart doesn’t spend money to promote welfare, considering how they use it to subsidize compensating their employees and desperately want to avoid unionization. If their employees couldn’t afford food, housing, or basic medical care for their children, they might just ignore those anti-union videos they are forced to watch upon hiring.

“If these people find jobs, why would they still need food stamps?”

Because most jobs in your back-assward state pay shit for wages. Food stamps etc. are simply corporate welfare for Wal-Mart and other cheapskate employers. Right-wingers love to whine about these “government giveaways,” but the true beneficiaries of welfare are employers who pay non-living wages.

Or, in Walmart’s case, the billionaire Walton family that donates a lot of money to Republican candidates.

When you pick on poor people, you really show who you are.

The GOP attitude is that poor people are really rich people because of their government benefits. This is truly sick.

“Peeps” on SNAPS?

How in the hell were those little marshmellow chickens and bunnies able to get on food stamps???

I know, they are only employed from March – April and get laid off (or eaten) the rest of the year.

Do you really think that the type of job they would get would pay all the normal expenses of living?

tell you what..

lets see you live off a minimum wage job for 3 months…and feed and support your family too..

The funny thing about federally funded or aided programs is that most gov.’s don’t have as much authority to changes the rules as they think. More likely than not, most of the changes will be in name only and won’t have any real impact.

I am so sick and tired of seeing and hearing people that are on welfare that are third plus generation recipients of these programs. They get free if not greatly reduced rent, financial assistance to pay electricity, food stamps and a free cell phone with 250 minutes a month, free child care while they sit on their asses and move their dead beat boyfriends in the very free housing that tax payers are providing them and many more perks. Yet a vast majority of them never seek to improve their way of living and get a job even if it is minimum wage. It would be some relief for tax payers if the recipients would get some type of job and reduce the amount of assistance that is so recklessly passed out to them now without accountability from them or the government.

Have them work 4 days picking up litter roadside and on the 5th day seek employment.

The over/under on how many weeks of roadside duty before they magically found a job is 3…place your bets.

YES WE CAN!

Finaly, something on which I agree with you.

Though I do think they should sort the recyclables they pick up on the side of the road. I drove Highway 34 from Winnsboro to Bishopville and saw a million beer cans.

Justice, I had a fraternity brother that once got so drunk he picked up every beer bottle and can at our fraternity house and drank what was left out of them.

It was disgustingly funny.

well if you can’t feed’em don’t breed’em. given the obesity levels in this fatass state, a little hardwork and a little less caloric intake might do the water buffalos in this state a world of good.

I think if one is receiving gov aid they should help out at food banks, pick up trash on side of road, anything that would help us all out. I also think if you are receiving food stamps that before you receive them you should be required to take a class on couponing and shopping when items are on sale.

The program already exist in at 15 countries. In south Carolinaa. The jobs are paying minimum. Wage and majority of them also have household expenses that continue to make them eligible. For benefits. South Carolina and the federal government under the BUSH ADMINISTRATION decide go exclude all household resource such as: vehicles, bank account, land and etc. Now EBT CARD, child support, AND EPAY (AFDC CASH CARD) look the same so be careful of judging people card being used illegal. The program that’s currently implemented not working at all.

SNAP is based on income or the lack thereof. The proposal exempts those getting disability SSI, but those people who get disability also get a lower SNAP amount, if at all. There are people who get SNAP who are unemployable. Is her idea to make those starve?

I am a Gov’t employee, hired by the State through a Temp Agency that they own, in order to keep from paying me benefits. I do qualify for SNAP benefits and so does my caseworker at DSS who makes less per hour than I do.I do agree that there are people who abuse the system. I would rather be the one looking at the entire picture rather than judging from one shaded area. Not one of us is exempt from being a recipient, and if you believe you are, keep living and dont die.
