PALMETTO STATE HOLDS OUT AS REPUBLICANS’ “SOUTHERN STRATEGY” COLLAPSES
By Amy Lazenby || A major takeaway from the ongoing post-election analysis is that Republicans’ decades-long stronghold over the South is beginning to slip due to demographic shifts – but that’s not the case in every Southern state.
Situated in the midst of a region that is facing population changes – and resulting political challenges – for Republicans, South Carolina continues to buck the trend of liberalism creeping into Dixie. In fact, the Palmetto State isn’t just holding out as a conservative stalwart in an area where GOP influence is eroding – it is on the verge of shifting further to the right.
A recent article by Douglas Blackmon in The Washington Post emphasized that while Republicans maintained their political stronghold in southern states clustered along the Mississippi River, they faced challenges in southern states that hug the Atlantic coastline, specifically Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
Blackmon theorized that “a combination of a growing black population, urban expansion, oceanfront development and in-migration from other regions has opened up increasing opportunities for Democrats in those states.” He pointed to the fact that President Obama carried Virginia, Florida and narrowly missed carrying North Carolina on Election Day – in addition to the fact that Obama polled as well in Georgia as any Democrat since Jimmy Carter – as evidence of a political shift to the left in the Atlantic Coastal region of the South.
But what about South Carolina in particular? Blackmon cites the fact that Obama got 44 percent of the vote in the Palmetto State without engaging in any substantial campaigning here – as well as an influx of young, well-educated African-Americans to urban areas of the state as reasons for Republican politicos to be worried. African-Americans, though not a monolithic voting bloc, have voted overwhelmingly for Democrats over the past several decades, especially since the onset of Nixon’s “Southern Strategy,” giving Blackmon’s theory some teeth.
But as much as South Carolina Democrats would like to cling to this shift as a beacon of hope, South Carolina’s will not follow the rest of the Atlantic coastline as it shifts to the left. Instead, the next election cycle in South Carolina will move our state even further to the right.
As to the undeniable demographic changes happening across the South, the Palmetto State has shown a particular inelasticity in the effect of those changes on its political leanings. At the same time presumably Democratic, young, well-off African-Americans are moving into coastal areas such as Charleston, presumably Republican, white, affluent retirees have been moving to the coastal areas of South Carolina in large numbers as well. These demographic changes balance each other out, having no net political effect on a state that has for decades been a majority Republican state with a large Democratic minority.
The fact that President Obama got 44 percent of the vote in South Carolina is not particularly surprising in a state that consistently votes 40-45 percent Democratic and 55-60 percent Republican in presidential elections. Additionally, in a state where the Tea Party is strong (socially conservative Newt Gingrich carried the state’s Republican presidential primary this year) and fiscally conservative libertarians are gaining popularity, Republican politicians who aren’t seen as conservative enough by either group run the risk of being booted out of office. In fact two of the state’s highest-profile Republican leaders, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham and Governor Nikki Haley, will likely face formidable primary challengers when they are up for re- election in 2014.
The conservative non-profit Club for Growth, which “promotes a high growth economy through limited government and economic freedom,” has already named Graham as one of its top targets in 2014. He is seen as not fiscally conservative enough with respect to the debt ceiling and government bank bailouts and as too liberal on issues such as immigration reform and recent Supreme Court appointees.
S.C. Sen. Tom Davis (R-Beaufort), a libertarian leaning conservative and vocal Ron Paul supporter, is seen as Graham’s most likely opponent.
Meanwhile Governor Haley, once a darling of the Tea Party, has been harshly criticized by South Carolina conservatives for her expansion of the role of the executive branch, her mismanagement of the departments placed under her control, and for an ethics scandal involving money she allegedly accepted to lobby other legislators when she was a state representative.
Republican State Treasurer Curtis Loftis, who worked against many in the SCGOP establishment in an effort to address the state’s mismanaged pension fund – and who held a Fraud Detection and Prevention Seminar in the wake of the massive cyber attack on Haley’s Revenue Department – is being touted by Tea Party leaders as a more conservative primary opponent to Governor Haley.
After Election Day, several nationally prominent Republicans took note of the demographic shifts referenced by Blackmon and made overtures toward traditionally Democratic voting blocs in an effort to regain some of their eroding political power. Stunned by results in races they expected to win, they admitted that the conservative movement in America needed to address the concerns of these groups if it was going to remain a viable political force.
In South Carolina, however, Republicans have made no such overtures. They don’t have to – they need only to move further to the right to maintain their power.

A good indication of a novice writer is: the tendency to join status quo thought, as if it’s innovative or yours. You are doing nothing but regurgitating what every Leftwinger out there is offering for advice.
It’s wishful thinking and not very mature. FITS suffers from the same deficiency most of the time.
And the lack of critical analysis (backed by fact) is a gauge of talent-level.
Let me demonstrate your flaws:
1)South Carolina did NOT vote to nominate Romney. Even your lord-god FITS said the Mormon master of RomneyCare in Mass. Was NO different from Obama.
2)Obama totally exploited race-hate: Will the democrats now HAVE TO nominate a Black candidate to motivate the numbers of African-America voters and illegals?
3)How long can the democrat party promote voter fraud in states w/ Republican governors and assemblies? Snuff out cheating, and you’re cooked in Ohio and Penn.
4)How long before the economy completely collapses, and the Hand-Out, Do-nothing government-job jockeys in Northern Va. Realize their golden boy killed the golden goose?
5)Romney is a Mormon: Why do you think Obama SWEARS he is a Christian, even when his pastor (who also claims to be Christian) spews Bigotry and Racial Hatred against White America?
Face it: You got lucky. But it will straighten out. There is No Santa Claus and their ain’t no Coup DeVille sitting in the bottom of a Cracker Jack box. Obama is like the brat kid who inherits the company his father built. It eventually goes bankrupt and he is exposed. It just takes more time, I guess.
For now: You elected a King. He can live high on our dime, while good, working families suffer and you cul-de-sac, silver-spoon yuppies can laugh. It is no big Strategic win, unless you can claim the media was able to elect they guy they worship.
When it crashes and the media is weary of running cover, you will be placed back to the trash heap, where you have actually EARNED a spot.
Often, a perusal of comments in FitsNews is a trip down a rabbit hole, or a trek through the looking glass, into politics as mise-en-scene by Tim Burton or envisioned Dr. Timothy Leary–sporting a white Wamsutta sheet with no eye holes cut out.
The writer above has offered his “White Citizens Council” take on the results of November 6th. His disappointment, disillusionment and rage are frosting on the cake of electoral reality. The sobbing attendees at the convention center in Boston, MA (oh, the irony of that location!) were literally immobilized, frozen in time; one could hear a pin drop, their moment, and this fool’s above, having passed.
Admittedly, operating from suburban living rooms, the checkbooks of sociopathic capitalists like les freres Koch, and the janitorial closets of various “think tanks”–as well as the classrooms and auditoria of Pat R’s Regent University (“an education that fits your values,” yeah, right!)–deluded individuals such as this one may continue to make mischief with particular state governments and the occasional US House seat, but national influence for them is over–other than perpetual obduracy and obstruction.
Meanwhile, one might ask, “What did Karl Rove and pals do with all that money?”
Carole, you are blithe to ignore that the money has run out… no amount of Fed printing or buying is going to save us now. but, go ahead and perceive your election victory as a mandate for democrats. there is a day of reckoning coming – and not at a time or date of our choosing, either.
when the music stops, and the first checks don’t arrive, just how do you think that’s going to be received? how will that validate democrat ideas? do you really want to be the party in charge when that occurs?
please also explain specifically how “les freres Koch” and Karl Rove are any different than George Soros and David Axelrod.
The GOP will have at least two very divisive statewide primaries in 2014, which will split the party and quite possibly result in far right nominees. With credible nominees for the Democrats (not a given by any means), the Democrats could win some offices, particularly the Governorship.
But will the party hierarchy be able to take advantage of the situation by running smart campaigns with good candidates? That is the question.
Personally I think the question is more along the lines of ‘Will they start running conservative candidates.’ I haven’t seen one for many years.
Have a Great Day!! :) There won’t be many left with the Repuklicrats in charge.

Answer: No.
? is will your stinking cousins move here as well or stay in the land of curry goat?
“– as well as an influx of young, well-educated African-Americans to urban areas”
There can’t be more than 10-12 of these. The ones I see are unemployed and on the public dole.
Amy: I enjoy most of your columns, but when you write about something the entire world already knows, well, not so much. South Carolina shows “a particular inelasticity”? Who knew?
Will (and when will) African-Americans voters quit voting on RACE only???…
As more African-americans become self-sufficient, and become more Givers than government takers…will that not stop their Closed-minded, monolitihic voting pattern…
That goes double as government jobs dry up from Obama’s Depressed economy…
Once Racially-Segregated voters usually become more Mainstrem after becoming producers…The GOP made that bet on Hispanics, and it’s possible. It’s why the democrats have resorted to Illegals to get power…
Is Lizenby so Racist she analyzes Black voters differently than she does other Amercians???…Why do you assume you can ALWAYS exploit Hate and Bigotry with Black voters???
Will (and when will) African-Americans voters quit voting on RACE only???…
When the Republican party stops primarily representing middle-aged and old white people? I mean, it isn’t like the GOP has the Hispanic or Asian vote either.
But hey, great job singling out black people. As a devout Mormon, Romney knows all about funny beliefs regarding blacks.
Maybe when white people stop voting purely on RACE.
mabey when MountainPenelope shaves her legs, beard, and Back
Why is Asheville, NC home to so many Bolsheviks?
… lots of comrades, pinkos and hippies …
… Asheville voted 70% for Obama in 2008 …
FORWARD, comrades!
Gimpy: Liberals have a habit of infesting the most beautiful places, to render them unfit for the decent…
Look at South Florida and San Fran-Sicko. Same for Key West. They do the same in big cities, where a lot government money (yours and mine) is directed…
They take over the schools, the colleges and the media.
While the Conservatives do the heavy lifting.
And Smirks: The GOP is the same for everybody…not a coalition of special intrests.
All are welcome, but you have to abandon your Racism, Gender hate and love for failure and become an American, first…
The “hippies’ in Asheville ain’t “hippies” at all.
Hippies?????
I was around in the ’60’s and these present day clones are a pittiful excuse for “hippies”
Time for you to go back and watch reruns of Archie Bunker for all you know about that era.
Asheville’s a pretty cool town actually, always something going on and a number of good beer spots. “Jack Of The Woods” is one of my favorites.
REAL belgin whites, and killer hamburgers (believe it or not).
Just the right place to go after a day spent riding motorcycles in the surrounding mountains.
Plenty of great breweries in Asheville to tour. I’ll have to remember Jack of the Wood next time I’m up there.
Sparkle…in describing today’s “hippies” you also characterized today’s Liberals…
In the olden days: It was live and let live….
Today Liberals want to impose their bedroom habits on you and smite you if you ignore them…and yhey force you to their Race hate, and the polarization of men and women…
You have to have contempt for the functional White family and decnecy (exepct for their cushy little lifestyles)…or you are Supressed, hated and descriminated against…
The Bigots of long ago have nothing on the Modern-day Hate squads of the left…And the liberals ARE the power, until the stupid elitist whies and productive blacks figure it out…
Beer, lots of beer, good beer, excellent beer
Ashville is becoming, if not already, the Craft Beer Capital of America
Its greatest asset is a 20,000-acre protected watershed outside of town in the Great Smoky Mountains
Pristine water makes pristine beer and if there is one thing the Bolsheviks like, it is beer
“in describing today’s “hippies” you also characterized today’s Liberals…
”
No T. Well actually yes. today’s “liberals” absolutely include both Demlicans and Republicrats alike. There is no difference between the two. They are two sides of the same coin. Ceaser is an ass.
Have a Great Day!! :) There won’t be many left with the Repuklicrats or Demlicans in charge.

Smirks:
you are spot on as always.
If you haven’t done so already, give WNCW (88.7) a listen while you’re in the area if you have a FM radio in/on your “ride”
Great bluegrass music on Saturdays (Going across the Mountain” 12-7:00 PM – actually better than the stuff they offer on SiriusFM oops, I ment SiriusXM…) and “Celtic Winds” on Sundays 1-4 PM). I LOVE “Celtic Winds” – especially this time of the year. It’s hard to get into the Celtic spirit when it’s 95 degreess and the humidity is >70%!!
Safe travels and good eats/drinks!!!!
There are many bohemians and artsy-fartsy types in Asheville, NC.
The ONLY reason Ameroica must endure fo mo years is the steroidal black turnout in OH, VA, and FL.
It is the democrats with the demographic problem as we will see when all these juiced up votes revert to their natural state without a clean articulate fellow at the top of the ticket.
The frutis of their loyalty:
Higher unemployment.
Abortions on demand becuase they’re too lazy to take the free contraceptives.
Free phones.
Longer lines in the ER when they realize Obamacare is simply an expansion of Medicaid.
Yes we can!
What do you expect?
It is South Carolina after all
Where the general electorate (i.e. voting populace) goes blindly along what Queen Namrata and her ilk say concerning the DOR/SSN train wreck.
Accepting a pittance of 1 year’s worth of credit monitoring with out much more than an article or two in some of the states’s media outlets and no overwhelming hue & cry for more action and investigation into this fiasco.
Queen Namrata will let this one ride out all the while crying crocidile(sp) tears and saying “I feel your pain and concerns”.
Worse case of “SHEEPLE” syndrome I’ve ever seen……………
But again, it is South Carolina we are talking about……….
Lizenby completely ignores the trend of declining population in the Rust Belt and the Leftist states…
And SC is adding political power (see US Cong. Seat 7)….
Stupid libs ALWAYS over-play their hand…
This is no different…
sorry, you are wrong……….the demographics of the south are progressive-leaning. You think Hispanics will vote Republican? We are a younger, more secular, non-church going state and nation.
The GOP does not understand what happens to a women’s body. It does not understand rape. It is hateful to gays. It is a hateful group period. It is bigoted and narrow minded.
Big T you are wrong now, and you ahve always been wrong. Swallow your pride and admit defeat. YOU are what is wrong with South Carolina.
Just took my family to Asheville this weekend – first time for me – great city. We loved it. Diverse, friendly, lots of culture. Coming from Florida drove up through my old byways when I was at USC and working in Lexington – going up 321 – through Denmark, North, Swansea, Fairfax. OMG – 20 years of GOP rule have done a great job in essentially killing those towns. They were never rich, but they came across as complete crap holes now. I see Rep. Joe Wilson is doing a bang up job for his constituents. Go Joe. Not to mention the fantastic job Nikkie is doing. My wife and mother in law come from the third world – even they thought it was nasty.
Considering SC gets $1.92 for every $1 it pays into federal coffers – I want my 92-cents back – you’re clearly wasting my money by voting for Big T candidates. Bit T – I’m tired of you SC Republican moocher / takers throwing my money down the drain.
yea stephen North and all those places have been bigtime citys for years. Take your ass back up to Fl and stay there and BTW tell your Mother-in-Law to slap the shit out her daughter for hooking up with such a dumazz as U
It is the libtards that have the demographic problem.
The ONLY reason America is subject to fo mo years was the steroidal black turnout in OH, VA, and FL.
Unless the democrat party pulls another clean articulate fellow out of its ass these go-getter voters will revert to true form and will sit on their couches yapping on their obamaphones (Exhibit A: 2010 mid-terms).
And for their loyalty, these go-getters will achieve:
HIGHER Unemployment.
Abortion of their “demographics” on demand since they are too lazy to get their free contraceptivces.
Longer lines in the ER since obamacare is now exposed as nothing more than an expansion of Medicaid.
Obamaphones.
Yes we can!
This is about basic demographics. The reason for liberalization is because a very large generation of young people (Gen Y) is becoming politically active, and overtaking the less politically active (and more conservative) Baby Boom.
The Democrats were brilliant when they nominated Mr. Obama. He was a strong motivating factor for Gen Y. Now that they are very politically active, Gen Y is going to have a significant impact on the electorate for decades, and getting them involved early was brilliant.
However, Gen Y will probably grow more conservative over time, just like every other generation. However, this country has always been very moderate, shifting slightly left then right of center depending on demographics. Right now it is slightly left of center. It seems to me the Democrats are just more adept at adjusting to these trends.
Don’t buy it? We have seen it before. The country trended conservative from the late 80s until the mid 2000s, a function of the Baby Boom. It trended more liberal in the early 60s to the mid 80s, again a function of the Baby Boom. The country was more conservative from the 40s to the late 50s, a function of the Greatest Generation, but before that it was more liberal, again the impact of the Greatest Generation.
This is not hard to figure out. When it comes to macro trends, just look at demographics. Demographics drive everything from politics to consumption to lifestyle trends.
“African-Americans, though not a monolithic voting bloc, have voted overwhelmingly for Democrats over the past several decades”
Isn’t this a contradictory sentence?
No. It would be contradictory if they had voted 100% for Democrats over the past several decades. There are Republican African Americans. U.S. Congressman Tim Scott from SC’s first congressional district is one of them, as is former Republican Presidential candidate Herman Cain, who had strong support from back conservatives. Black conservatism emphasizes traditionalism, strong patriotism, capitalism, free markets, and strong social conservatism within the context of the black church. Booker T. Washington is considered the founder of black conservatism in American intellectual and political life.
There was a movie a while back called Red Planet. The pilot/copilot/whatever is clearly an assinine jacks boot that can do no wrong.
He crashes a lander on the planet mars. He states something to the effect that he “techncially” did nothing wrong because the outcome of the adventure would have been the same whether he crashed or not.
So, Ms. Lazenby is technically correct. Only 98% of the blacks in this country voted for Obutthead therefore she is technically correct in her statement. Technically speaking.
Technically, a Fracking libtard.
Technically, Have a Great Day!! :) There won’t techincally speaking, be many left with the Repuklicrats or Demlicans in charge. What a joke.
Frank Pytel
Lizenby just explained (or attempted an explanation) that because Black Republicans get elected…it MUST be because Black Voters elected them…therefore Blacks don’t vote Racist…
No…idiot…WHITE Voters, who are not monolithic like Black Voters, cast the ballots on IDEAS, not Hate and Revenge…
You TOTALLY represent your intellectual depth with your FAILED attempt to try to say Blacks don’t vote on RACIST intrests…
Thanks for showing us your ability to reason…
Actually, I explained the origins and underpinnings of black conservatism and reminded you that there are not only conservative black voters, but also conservative black officeholders.
As for intellectual depth, I would give yours a little more credence if you could spell my name correctly, which is written out for you above.
The GOP has gone w/ the two most Centrist-Moderate candidates for the last 2 national elections. Conservative voters stayed home in 08…and even more-so in 2012.
In the mid-terms (2010) w/o a national moderate on the ticket, Conservatives racked the left’s @$$…
I’ll admit Obama did well because he has appealed to the Racist and Separtist Nature of low-intelligence voters…to polarize the country…
But the democrats will have to run a Black candidate everytime now, or risk a non-motivated base…
Not to mention: Obama is making a mess…and eventually an adult will have to clean it up. When there is NO more government freebies or hndouts, and nothing but Gays in the Army as fodder in War…I’m guessing we’ll see a lot of abandonment from politics from the lazy and bitter…and that is not good for democrats…
Once again your post is fact deficient. If he was appealing to low intelligence voters, how did he miss you?
Give Biggie some hindsight and he still comes off a damn fool. I see folks like you now blaming Romney when you idiots picked him. The GOP are turnng on themselves…and it’s a good show.
A one, and a two, and a three…”Boy, the way Glenn Miller played…”
Amy, the response you are hearing is shock from the racists that racism is insufficient to hold a governing coalition together. That group has for decades successfully turned to racism for political power. First as Democrats, then as Dixiecrats, and now as Southern Republicans.
They usually use code words to thinly veil their racism, but their shock at losing this election, has temporarly pushed all they aside, and they feel the need to shout from the roof tops, “What is wrong with you people you are voting for a n****.”
voting for Nuke Hopkins? No he will not win the Heisman either
I understand totally the black community voting for one of their own (well, at least half of their own) just as the jury understood OJs glove didn’t fit.
What I am shocked about is the black community turning out in larger numbers in FL, OH, and VA than in the 2008 cycle vis-a-vis the stealth BBBS (BLACK barber and beauty shop) campaign.
And even more shocked that these go-getters vote again and again for libtards when the vast majority of that population is being decimated by these policies – the poriton of that oh so hard working population that survives the abortionist’s forceps that is.
Yes, it is true, racism held the democrat coalition together one more time.
Who honestly thinks these go-getters are going to turn out in similar fashion in 2014?
Just think of the delicous irony of the onerous portions of Obamacare kicking in just in time for the 2014 mid-terms, with folks realizing they are being forced to buy an overly expensive health insurance policy or pay a whopper of a fine to the IRS!
Yes we can!
“What I am shocked about is the black community turning out in larger numbers in FL, OH, and VA than in the 2008 cycle vis-a-vis the stealth BBBS (BLACK barber and beauty shop) campaign.”
Then you must be stupid. The Republican Party demonizes an entire race as moochers, does every thing in their power to prevent them and other minorities from voting, and they expect them to sit back and take it.
Presumptively most Republicans believe as you do and will persist in their ongoing efforts to suppress the vote of those whom they believe will not support them. After all the more people who vote the more Republicans seem to lose.
Which tells these folks what they need to do. And that is whatever it takes vote, they need to jump through whatever obstacle is placed in their way; and when they are successful in voting, never forget who tried to take their vote away.

Reagan still blamed Carter for all ills even in Reagan’s second term. Plan of hearing about Bush’s culpability for a few more years. Turnabout is fair play.
White voters were supressed by a corrupt media…And the fact Romney was so moderate, like McCain…
I could overlook that…but white vote was down by millions and millions…if the media would have reported on Obama fairly, it may have motivated some Patriotism to get rid of the Anti-Amierican Obama…
As it was, the media covered up for Obama (see Candy Crowley)…
Bottom line: Bush Beat Gore and Kerry…and he ran RIGHT of McCain and Romney…(FITS still ain’t over that)….
But Bush Screwed up by letting the moderate, DeMint-Hating Karl Rove, direct his policy…and the nation hated Bush in 2008 for it…
That said: None of you will get it. You all just hold hands and keep repeating the same Lockstep cliches…
Lizenby is just another example of liberal Pack-Think…and good campaign will knock a democrat out…but the GOP mainstream blew it…
“…but the GOP mainstream blew it…”
You have that right…by letting too many right wing nuts into their fold. You can’t have it both ways, Biggz. At this point maybe your party can get some geritol and apply for Medicare.
The democrats have to depend on a coalition of Gimme-Gimme-Gimme voters…The goodies will run out, and you’ll have the Selfish Fighting each other to keep the hand-outs that define them and their reason for being leftists…
Or the workers in your party may EVENTUALLY figure out that Earners will get screwed by you…
Conservatives are the same for all. Conservatives will win in the end…
Hitler finally crumbled, just as Jim Jones Collapsed and the USSSR…So will the American Left…Corruption, lies and bad people can only prevail for so long…
This country is a testament against liberal ideology…but if you are a FOOL, you certainly will not be able to read that…especially now, while you ride high…
Poignant, as usual. They do not get it. Frankly, I do not desire to say what can be used against us by democrat hacks who troll comment sections for nuggets to use at the next DNC meeting. This we can be sure of, regardless, in due time, the Democrats will lose the Latino vote. The Black vote screwed themselves by not playing the middle, to cross the aisle and vote for America. They did control the middle. They will end up in the trash heap of used refuse the white democrat establishment used for their 24 hour chefs, beach houses, jet setting lifestyles. They have no clue how used they were and are, by the likes of the Pelosi’s and Stoyers, and Gephardt’s and Kennedy’s and Kerry’s and the Clinton’s.
And the Latino vote is Catholic.
Conseratives are the same for all? Explain this shit to single women and minority groups y’all conseratives are so concerned about. People like Rush are making idiots out of the Republican Party…why I left them after Reagan. Better listen the fuck up because The Great White Voter bloc is DEAD!
The comments above are extremely interesting. You have helped me to compile my lists:
