Maggie Murdaugh
Described as an adoring mother in her obituary, Maggie Murdaugh was the 52-year old wife of Alex Murdaugh. Born to Terry and Kennedy Branstetter, she attended Unionville High School in Pennsylvania. When her father’s job relocated the family to South Carolina in 1987, she enrolled at the University of South Carolina where she met Alex Murdaugh. Maggie was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority during her time at USC and graduated in 1991.
Maggie and Alex were married at the Second Presbyterian Church in Charleston, South Carolina on August 14, 1993. They had two sons, Buster and Paul Murdaugh.
Maggie Murdaugh and her son, Paul, were murdered on June 7, 2021 at their Colleton County home. On the night of her and her son’s murders, Alex Murdaugh had asked Maggie to meet him at their Islandton, South Carolina estate – known locally as Moselle- to say good-bye to his ailing father, Randolph Murdaugh. According to friends, Maggie expressed reluctance to meet him, but relented and drove to Moselle from their Edisto Island beach home.
Sources indicate that Maggie and Alex were living separately at the time of her death. Reports that Maggie had recently hired a divorce attorney have not been confirmed.
