Judge Clifton Newman
Judge Clifton Newman presided over the double homicide trial of accused murderer Alex Murdaugh.
Prior to being elected Circuit Court Judge by the South Carolina General Assembly in 2000, he was a partner in his own law firm, first in Cleveland, Ohio, then in Columbia and Kingstree, South Carolina. He has also served as a defense attorney, civil practitioner, and prosecutor. Newman received his undergraduate degree from Cleveland State University and his J.D. from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1976.
A native of rural South Carolina, Judge Newman is well-respected within the legal community. His even temperament, knowledge of the law, and command of the courtroom are qualities that were on display during the trial of Murdaugh.
