I just wanted to say that it is entirely plausible that a lack of signs could play a roll in accidents like this.

There was a time, when I first began driving a tractor-trailer, that I picked up a trailer in rural Texas off of a 4 lane highway. It was in the evening so it was dark. The highway I was driving on was divided by woods and I actually had thought it was a two lane highway. Since I was new to driving trucks, I didn’t know enough to watch for the yellow solid line on the left shoulder that would indicate it is only the northbound half of the highway. I actually couldn’t see the line very well with the lighting.

The drop yard was on the right (east) side and after hooking up to it I pulled out of the yard, however I turned left thinking it was a two lane highway. There were no ‘one way’ signs across the lanes to indicate that I shouldn’t turn left. Within a few seconds I started hearing some chatter on the CB radio so I turned it up and asked what the commotion was about. Another driver replied that they were hollering at the truck that was going the wrong way on the highway. It took me about a second to realize that it was me they were trying to get hold of so I really was in a panic with a full 18-wheeler going the wrong way on the highway.

Thankfully I quickly came upon a crossover to the southbound side of the highway and I was able to get out of the northbound lanes, but my heart was pounding and I was really shook up. I really doubted myself after that and felt like I had picked the wrong career, but I assure you that I have never ever made that mistake again.

The point of the matter is that mistakes happen. They are not deliberate, but they are just mistakes and we all learn by them. Sometimes those mistakes have grave consequences that can affect others. Had that night in Texas been busy, I could have killed several people, but thankfully someone was watching over me and it wasn’t busy. But it was a lesson that I never forgot that would go along with the many other lessons that we all learn in life.

As much as this accident with Taran Nolan and Glendora Holmes was a tragic event, it is an accident and unless there were other circumstances involved such as drugs or alcohol enough to inhibit one’s ability to drive, it is an accident probably caused by a grave mistake that will never be forgotten. But it can be forgiven, which is what allows all involved to heal and have closure.

I will pray for these families as they move forward in life. I hope this story can help give some perspective.

I just recently and inadvertently came across Taran Nolan’s Facebook page. It shows her struggles to gain some semblance of normalcy after that horrific auto accident. It pulls my heart strings. Having said that, I don’t see anything concerning the Glendora Holmes family on social media. I don’t seem to see much support in the form of publicizing Holmes’ tribulations. I feel for both families now that I have a better picture of what transpired and pray healing occurs between the two families. Thank you for your reporting on this topic.
