Henry McMaster Headed To Greenville

Governor hopes to improve his standing in GOP stronghold …

South Carolina governor Henry McMaster will look to shore up his weak political positioning in Greenville, S.C. when he pays a visit to the 130th annual meeting of the Greenville Chamber this evening.

McMaster is scheduled to address more than 1,100 Upstate business and community leaders at the chamber event, which begins at 4:45 p.m. EDT at the Greenville Convention Center.

Billed as “the largest business networking event in the region,” the gathering is also an opportunity for McMaster to gain some ground in an area of the state where he struggled mightily last year.  The fiscally liberal Republican lost Anderson, Greenville, Laurens, Oconee, Pickens and Spartanburg counties to Upstate businessman John Warren in the 2018 GOP runoff election.

McMaster also underperformed in Greenville County during the 2018 general election against Democrat James Smith.

Warren is reportedly looking at another gubernatorial run in 2022 – although it remains to be seen whether he would be challenging McMaster or the aging Republican’s lieutenant governor, Pamela Evette.

Frankly, Evette has been far more active politically over the last few months than McMaster.
