A deputy family court clerk in Bamberg County, South Carolina was arrested this week by agents of the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and charged with embezzlement.

Caroline Angela Raysor, 46, of Bamberg, S.C. was charged with one count of embezzlement of public funds valued at more than $10,000.  That’s a felony charge that could land her in jail for up to ten years and subject her to a fine “in proportion to the amount of embezzled funds.”

How much money did Raysor allegedly take?

It’s not immediately clear, but according to an affidavit accompanying the warrant for her arrest the embezzlement took place between July of 2016 and September of last year.

According to the affidavit, Raysor “while engaged in her official capacity as the deputy clerk of court … who in this position had the responsibility of safekeeping, transferring and disbursing public funds, did embezzle these funds and convert them into her own use to deprive the County of Bamberg.”

SLED investigated the case at the request of the Bamberg County sheriff’s office and the county Clerk of Court’s office.

Raysor was booked at the Bamberg County detention center.  SLED’s press release did not specify which entity will prosecute the case, although Bamberg is under the jurisdiction of S.C. second circuit solicitor Strom Thurmond Jr.

As with anyone accused of committing any crime, Raysor is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty by a jury of her peers (or until she makes a public pleading in connection with the case).

Here’s the official release from SLED …
