A charge has been filed in connection with a child’s untimely death in Lancaster, South Carolina last month.
According to a news release from the city, 25-year-old Kayla Marie Cook has been arrested on one count of homicide by child abuse in the death of the three-year-old Lillian Schroeder.
Cook was arrested last week by the Cleveland County (N.C) sheriff’s office with assistance from members of the Lancaster, S.C. child fatality task force. On Tuesday of this week, she was transported back to the Palmetto State where she remains incarcerated at the Lancaster county detention center.
Bond was denied in connection with the homicide charge against Cook.

Police and emergency personnel responded to 418 Heath Circle in Lancaster at 12:04 p.m. EST on Monday, December 18 “in reference to an unresponsive and unconscious three year old.”
“Upon arrival the child was found lying on her back in the living room unresponsive,” a statement from the city noted. “The child was assessed, with no pulse or respiration located. The child was immediately transported to Springs Memorial Emergency Room by police vehicle with police and fire personnel administering CPR while en route.”
“Once at the hospital, emergency treatment continued, however all efforts to revive the child met with negative results,” the statement added.
According to the warrant, “numerous bruises were observed on several parts of the victim’s body.”
An autopsy revealed Schroeder’s cause of death as cerebral edema “which was due to a blunt force trauma/ injury to her head.” The autopsy concluded that she died “within minutes” after sustaining the injury.
“This tragic incident has taken a heavy toll on the families involved,” Lancaster police chief Scott Grant said. “It has touched a lot of people, including the community, first responders, officers and investigators involved as well. We will continue to speak for the young victim in this case as it moves forward through the judicial process.”
