… JUST NAME IT SOMETHING COOL, OKAY?
This website has dinged S.C. Senator John Courson a good bit over the years. The fiscally liberal Republican lawmaker has a vastly different definition of “core functions of government” than we do … which is okay.
Diff’rent strokes, right?
Despite the slings and arrows we’ve launched in his direction, Courson has always been a class act – as he was again last weekend when our founding editor bumped into him and his lovely wife, Elizabeth Courson, at a wedding reception in downtown Columbia, S.C.
Unlike some in the Palmetto political arena, Courson knows how to take criticism. Which is to say he never takes it personally, and always laughs it off – no matter how hard we pop him.
In fact every year this former Marine has provided our website’s founding editor Will Folks with a signed copy of the latest S.C. legislative manual. This is a directory of state government that Courson usually inscribes with a humorous reference to him being an aging “RINO” – or “Republican in Name Only.”
Do we use this manual? Yup … every day actually …

Anyway, in addition to keeping us supplied with these informative books (which used to be former governor Nikki Haley‘s job) Courson and his wife keep us up to speed on their various canine companions – each of which receives a conservative moniker.
Let’s see … they’ve had “Reagan” (a.k.a. Gipper), “Goldwater” (a.k.a. Goldie) and “Strom” – the latter named after Courson’s mentor, former U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond.
The newest addition to the Courson family? “Maggie T,” named after the indomitable “Iron Lady” of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher.
Take a look …

Awww … pretty girl.
“Solid conservatives all,” Courson’s wife told us of the family’s dogs. “Perhaps the next one should be named Will?”
Ha!
We won’t hold our breath on that, but we do appreciate the Coursons – who are both wonderful examples of how to disagree without being disagreeable. And as longtime supporters of animal rescue efforts, we’re glad to see Miss Maggie T has found herself a wonderful, loving home.
