THIS IS BECOMING A “THING …”

We wrote earlier this week on jellyfish swarms keeping swimmers out of the water in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Beach hazard warnings from the National Weather Service (NWS) were issued on Sunday and Monday for the Grand Strand, with swimmers urged to stay out of the water until 8:00 p.m. EDT each day.

“We’re seen a hundred jellyfish from up here today,” a fisherman on the Second Avenue pier told reporter Audrey Hudson of The (Myrtle Beach) Sun News this week.

Meanwhile a spokesperson for a local lifeguard service told the paper there were so many stings they had “stopped counting.”

Jellyfish thrive in warmer water, and the average temperature of the ocean at Myrtle Beach during the month of August is a balmy 83 degrees – hotter than any other month.

Clearly this is becoming another “thing” for the South Carolina coast … which is already dealing with dirty waterdirtier politicianselevated crimehigh taxesquestionable landlords and an unsustainable tourism model.

We’ll keep our eyes on the situation …
