Dear Editor,

This picture shows how the S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) “fixes” potholes.  This is on Russell Street in Orangeburg, S.C. leaving town heading eastbound in the direction of Interstate 26.

They put orange cones out around this pothole and shut down the lane – with no warning signs on a four-lane highway with a 55 miles-per-hour speed limit.

I wonder if they have caused any wrecks with this setup?

Is this because they’re broke, incompetent or just don’t care?  You should start a column and let people send in pictures like this and post them.

Anon: Thanks for sending this picture/ letter. We agree with you on SCDOT’s incompetence – in fact we ran an article just yesterday on that very subject.  As for your idea about starting a column where people “send in pictures like this and post them,” don’t look now but you just started it!
