ECO-RADICALISM’S ESCALATING COST …

|| By FITSNEWS || In early 2014 a study commissioned by “Big Coal” found that poor people paid a disproportionately high percentage of their incomes on energy costs – and that all people were paying more of their income on energy costs due to declining income levels.

But before a bunch of recalcitrant enviro-radicals play the ad hominem “Big Coal is Biased!” card, let’s consider a few things.

First, income levels are falling (especially when you adjust for inflation).  And poor people do pay disproportionate percentages of their income on energy costs.

These’s aren’t industry opinions, they are established facts – confirmed by reams of data (including government data).  So while “Big Coal” may indeed be biased, it’s not like the industry is talking out of its hindquarters on these particular points …

Don’t believe us?  Educate yourself …

Nor is “Big Coal” alone in arguing that the latest installment of U.S. president Barack Obama‘s eco-radicalism – an effort to shutter power plants across the country – is only going to exacerbate the problem.

It is …

Last September, U.S. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska released a report outlining the devastating effect higher energy costs would have on already cash-strapped citizens.

“Too many Americans suffer from energy insecurity; they cannot afford the energy required to heat or cool their homes or secure other basic needs such as refrigeration,” Scott and Murkowski wrote at the time.

In fact, their report argued a ten percent increase in nationwide energy costs – which is a low-end estimate of the damage of Obama’s proposals – would plunge 840,000 additional Americans into poverty.

And yes, poverty in America is already at record levels.

“American families should not be forced to choose between affording groceries and heating their home,” Scott said.

Scott should know.  The people he represents are more vulnerable than most.

According to data from the U.S. Energy Administration, Palmetto State residents – among the lowest income earners in America – pay 12.52 cents per kilowatt of electrical power.

That’s the highest rate in the south, people.

Can they afford the impact of Obama’s $8.4 billion-a-year plan?  Um, no.  Not even a little bit.

And beyond the widening and deepening of poverty … let’s not forget how higher energy costs will continue squeezing what’s left of the middle class.

For those of you early voters in South Carolina, Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton has vowed to push forward Obama’s mandates if she is elected, while the vast majority of the GOP field – including establishment choice Jeb Bush – oppose the plan.

Choose your candidate accordingly …

“…Obama‘s eco-radicalism – an effort to shutter power plants across the country – is only going to exacerbate the problem.”
You are right on the money. Obama is shutting down Coal fired power plants across the nation. Not a bad deal– you might say, we need clean air. Yes we do, but given that 39 percent of the electricity generated in the US in 2014(see link) was by coal-fired power plants, it is going to drive the cost of electricity sky high. also the coal producing sections of this country will suffer economic stress where coal mining is a major part of the economy.
We need to try to keep the environment as clean as possible, but the mass shutting down of coal fired power plants so quickly will have a very serious impact on our economy and definitely put the poorer portion of our citizens in a bind. Phasing in cleaner power production would be a smart move, but Obama made the statement while campaigning for his first term that he was “going to put the coal industry out of business.” Looks like he is succeeding, and it appears he is slapping the average American in the face.

The coal-fired plant that is ten miles from my house was not shuttered, it was demolished and removed…Good luck on those power bills.

All this means is coal plants will shut down. Obama wants to destroy an entire industry, put millions out of work, and make all our electric rates skyrocket. Not like he didn’t warn us.

I took him seriously when he said it. And there is no way we can replace 39 percent of our power producing capability with renewable energy sources anytime soon.

Yes, you are welcome, and it is a .gov site, so the lefties can not denounce it as right propaganda. It would put this country in a bind if all that capacity goes away. And it would take years, if not decades to replace that capacity.

RogueElephant September 23, 2015 at 9:58 pm

If the US doesn’t elect a conservative Republican POTUS in 16 we are going to be the cleanest, greenest poorest third world country on earth. The first act of a new POTUS should be to close and lock the door to the EPA. And cancel every executive order Obummer has made from day one/.

Except that’s clearly not true.

European nations…let’s say the Scandanavian ones…consistently rate in the highest GDP per capita rankings. They also invest in their own citizenry by everything from full healthcare to generous pensions, lots of paid leave, subsidized education, etc.

A lot of them also make $$ from oil and natural gas but enforce strict EU codes on promoting green energy, renewables and the like. They are not destitute by a damn site and they get the street cred of being able to say hand on heart that they are making a difference in reducing global warming.

The problem is the US is comprised of 50% of idiots (South and Midwest I’m talking to you) that will gladly kill their own mothers if Fox tells them to. Add that to a corrupt political system, vulture capitalism and complete disregard for our fellow men/women…and you have the current state of things.

Costs Too Much September 24, 2015 at 9:22 am

It takes a lot of money to move somewhere. Moving overseas is even more expensive and time consuming. It also means leaving your friends and family behind. There’s also nothing wrong with just wanting general improvements to what you see as a great country. Even the greatest countries have things they need to improve, there is no shame in admitting it.

I feel like people who bring out this argument can’t actually debate the issues being discussed and want an easy way out so they don’t have to look stupid.

I’m sure you don’t like Obamacare, should you have to move because you don’t like it? I’m sure you don’t like a lot of things Obama is doing, why aren’t you packing your bags? Are you going to tell us that it’s different in your case? That is why your argument is bad.

Reply
RogueElephant September 24, 2015 at 9:49 am

General improvements here are what it is all about. It just pisses me off when these jerks just say how bad it is here and how great it is everywhere else. The Scandinavian countries were , up until the Muslim invasion, mostly the same people. They don’t have the “diversity” we have. Everyone going in the same direction makes governing much easier. They may even make liberalism work for a while. BTW. I was here before Obummer and with God’s help I will be here after he is gone.

Nick Chucker September 24, 2015 at 9:54 am

‘General Improvements’ socialists like ‘Costs To Much’ want are very simple…destruction of the Judeo Christian foundations in this country(gay marriage), redistribution of wealth(obamacare) and using matches to heat your home, cook and read(EPA).

Nick Chucker September 24, 2015 at 10:05 am

While polices under Obama do increase costs for every strata of consumers, the premise at the beginning of this article is somewhat bogus. Since food, gasoline, electricity, natural gas, etc are basically fixed prices not based on the user’s income, then obviously the poor pay a larger percentage for them. States are finding that subsidies and net metering policies for rooftop solar panels are costing taxpayers millions and tend to benefit higher-income households, who can more afford them.Furthermore, households with solar panels are finding it more difficult to sell their homes if the lease on the solar panels has not been paid off. Prospective homeowners are worried that the solar equipment will become obsolete or will not save as much on electricity bills as advertised. Real estate agents indicate that potential home buyers lose interest in purchasing a home if they need to qualify for credit to take over solar lease payments for the next 15 to 17 years. As a result, current home owners often find that they need to buy out the remaining lease payment stream — $15,000 or $20,000 or more.

Pickens continued, “Obama needs to go in, study it, look at it, and decide what an energy plan is, and then go forward with it. He needs to explain to his people, ‘Hey, we can get on everything green. We can get on everything renewable. Like Harry Reid’s ‘cash flow’?

Reid has been one of [ENN’s] most prominent advocates, helping recruit the company during a 2011 trip to China and applying his political muscle on behalf of the project in Nevada. His son, a lawyer with a prominent Las Vegas firm that is representing ENN, helped it locate a 9,000-acre desert site that it is buying well below appraised value from Clark County, where Rory Reid formerly chaired the county commission.

“Well below appraised value” is a considerable understatement. The deal Rory Reid put together for the firm his dad brought to town saw ENN purchase the site for just $4.5 million — a mere fraction of separate appraisals that valued the property at $29.6 million and $38.6 million. Even with all of that, however, the project has failed to move forward as rapidly as Harry and Rory Reid would like — for the simple reason that there is currently no market in Nevada for the green energy ENN claims it could produce….

By Douglas Ernst – The Washington Times – Tuesday, July 7, 2015

Sen. Bernie Sanders said Monday that the Obama administration is not being forthright with the American people about the real unemployment rate.

The Vermont senator told a Portland, Maine, audience of 7,500 that the Labor Department’s 5.3 percent unemployment rate is a ruse.

“There is another set of government statistics,” the independent senator said, The Daily Caller reported, “and that real unemployment if you include those people who have given up looking for work and the millions of others who are working part-time 20, 25 hours a week when they want to work full-time, when you put all of that together, real unemployment is 10.5 percent.”

You still need the current infrastructure to provide power when solar and wind are not available.

The way to go for 24/7 is mini-hydro. Unfortunately, that requires a steady source of running (dam, stream, river, etc) water. When I win the lotto jackpot, there’s this little place in the North Midlands with a 20 acre pond and old style grist mill that looks like it could easily be converted to mini-hydro…

Reply
erneba September 24, 2015 at 8:35 am

Solar panels are a nice supplement, but what are you going to do when the sun don’t shine and at night. And the same holds forth for wind power, what you gonna do when the wind don’t blow. The answer would be affordable storage batteries for home use, they don’t exist now and if they did they would be so damn expensive no one could afford them.Maybe one day they will come.
At best, during our lifetime, solar and wind power will be a supplement to distributed power, not a replacement. The power companies are not fretting over your pipe dreams. I wish it would happen soon, each home able to generate and store their own power. But there is a lot of research and technology ahead to get to that point.
I think the idea of small nuclear reactors that the Japanese have been toying with may show some promise, and then again, it may not.

A costly Liberal Myth September 24, 2015 at 8:58 am

$30,000 for solar panels for a house, and they provide a fraction of need. Very STUPID idea.

Get Another Quote Dumbass September 24, 2015 at 9:32 am

Solar panel installations can cost less than $10,000 to install. You’re quoting a high number because it suits your argument. You are a dishonest person.

Solar is 2% of all energy September 24, 2015 at 12:00 pm

BULLSHIT…Why do think Solyndra went bankrupt so quick, despite millions and millions of dollars Obama pissed away to them?

RogueElephant September 24, 2015 at 5:52 pm

Where do you get a complete system for $ 10,000 ? I’m talking panels, batteries, switch gear enough to run a house , the whole thing to go off grid ? I can’t get much below the $30,000 mentioned above. $10,000 with a like expectance of 17 to 20 years would be a bargain. The other , not so much.

erneba September 24, 2015 at 9:41 am

Solar panels and wind turbines are not the panacea to the energy problem. High initial cost, limited availability to the function intended, it is actually not always a supplement to your home needs, the power company pays you for the power you put on the grid.
Standalone Solar and wind power, off the grid will never, ever be a reliable source of power for anyone.

RogueElephant September 24, 2015 at 5:53 pm

I don’t know that I would go that far , but presently you are right.

Philip Branton September 24, 2015 at 11:07 am

You need to google “liquid metal batteries” and think how you would install one next to your septic tank to store electricity you generate yourself 365 days a year.

RogueElephant September 24, 2015 at 5:48 pm

Tesla is working on a system with a lithium ion battery. That technology is moving fairly fast.

erneba September 24, 2015 at 6:44 pm

Yeah, being off the grid and being self-sustaining with your own power would require batteries that are not available now. For the average residential power customer, a solar array with a connection to feed back into the grid would probably be sufficient.
I realized after searching the internet that I was not that knowledgeable about current and projected future technologies.
Sounds like you have been doing some checking for living ‘off the grid.’
I don’t see any solar arrays where I live, It must still be expensive will a long term payback.

Let’s be fair here. That negative price arose largely due to Texas having practically no electrical grid connections outside of Texas. The only place that wind power could be sold was in-state.

When demand is way down at night, and the wind is blowing hard, a negative price is the only way the ERCOT real-time market is going to take it off your hands. Of course, the $23/MWHr tax credit for wind producers takes away some of the sting.

The impact on such jobs on the Gulf Coast over the last five years has seen billions of dollars in losses due to the Deepwater Horizon spill 45 miles off-shore.
