SIMILARITY TO “REBEL GRAY” CITED AS CONCERN …
|| By FITSNEWS || As dissension builds within the S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) over allegations of discrimination against white troopers, those in charge of the agency are reportedly moving forward with additional politically correct plans.
According to our sources at the agency, embattled S.C. Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) director Leroy Smith and governor Nikki Haley both want to do away with the agency’s gray uniforms and patrol cars – ostensibly to avoid any connection to the gray military uniforms worn by officers of the former Confederate States of America (CSA).
No word yet on how much it would cost to replace the SCHP’s existing uniforms or repaint the vehicles …
The discussion comes two months after the Confederate flag was removed from the grounds of the S.C. State House following a contentious legislative debate.
Our view on the rumored uniform change?
It’s silly … and constitutes an unnecessary expense.
If the SCHP wants to start rotating in different colored uniforms (and repainted patrol cars) moving forward, we have no problem with that. Such a change is up to the agency’s leadership.
But replacing every uniform and repainting every patrol car in the name of political correctness?

The cars are supposed to “blend” in on the highways. One of the original colors, I’ve been told, was the color of asphalt gray, and it was called “Moonstone”. Someone clarify that if this is wrong.

More visible? Like a target for bad guy? They have reflective vests and blue lights that make them visible when need be.
“The bad guys” don’t seem to have a problem finding cops if they are intent to do harm, blending in- or not. It is us, their employers, who need to see them easily when there is a problem.

SCHP should wear a unique uniform/hat which is easily distinguishable from a county deputy and a city policeman when they are all at the same wreck.

Uhm yeah, most Confederate uniforms were “butternut”, or navy blue just like union troops wore (some union troops went to war in grey uniforms oddly). An imported blue gray fabric was widely used later in the war but by that point it was “wear what ya got”.
This idea borders on the stupidity that the Army has gone through over the last 10 years with our Army Combat Uniform digital camouflage that only blends in in gravel parking lots. The State House should prevent this foolishness.

I honestly think “leaders” (who couldn’t lead a thirsty drunk to a bar) do stuff like this so they can point to it and say “…look at the change I made…” as if all change were somehow magically good. The Marines haven’t changed their basic dress uniforms in more than 70 years. I’ve had to purchase three different dress uniforms in my 33 years. In 82″ the Jarheads and the Army were wearing BDUs, I was issued two sets of BDUs and two sets of gas station greens, from then I’ve had chocolate ship cookies, jungles, three color deserts, three different versions of BDUs until we switched to those gawdawful ACUs in ’05. The Jarheads switched from BDUs to their current uniforms in ’04.
And the tax payers got stuck for all of it. The uniform mfgs. make a bundle as well as all the Army surplus folks. I remember years ago when the military went from the OD field jacket to the camo version. I had to go to Ft. Jackson and had the new one on. One of the guys I went to see asked if I had my receipt ? I told him yes I actually did. He told me that the marines had been issued the new jackets but the Army hadn’t gotten theirs yet. I had bought mine at the Army surplus store in my home town. Already surplus before they were even issued. Cool.
I loved my old green field jacket, I wish I could find a real one. Totally useless as anything but a windbreaker without a liner but what a great piece of kit…

I was working with Surface Deployment Command in ’03 and found myself “…way up north where the air is cold…” on an extended mission. I needed a coat to wear when off duty and bought a pea coat at the NEX. That thing is almost enough to make me want to get “haze gray and underway”. Mine’s hanging in the hall closet as well though my watch caps are all an ugly shade of green called foliage and I don’t wear them with anything but my ugly, useless ACUs. The pea coat is another great piece of kit.

I was never issued a liner for mine, even though I spent two winters in Denver, Colo. The later camo. one I refered to above was a lot warmer and much better looking.
Green was better looking, the camo one was a better jacket though. Liners are the schnizzle, you got to get one. When we wanted to be hooah, we’d just wear the liner under the BDU top, that was good down to about 35 degrees, for me after that it was snivel level four.
The better looking green field jacket was the one that had the straight collar vs the rounded one with the hood in it.
You’re either wearing your dads, older than dirt, or a frequent visitor army navy stores. The zipper hood jacket is called the M 1968 because they begin issuing it in 1968. I do agree that the old school jacket is better looking. The only thing that damn hood was good for was getting yelled at when you had it out of the pocket or when it was snowing.
I did not have to wear my ‘dads, older than dirt” jacket, since I served 1964 til 2002. I was issued that jacket and just making a point that it looked better with the ole OD uniforms.
You’re option two, “older than dirt” (I’m there with you brother). I think the jacket sans hood was an M-1951. One of my instructors at Fort Gordon (who I’m pretty sure was around at the formation of the Earth) wore one, one of my peers commented on “that old jacket”, which engendered a 45 minute lecture about how “…he had socks older than we were… “. This was 1983 or 4… (I got the year wrong for the current version, it was ’65)

The NJSP still wear the same uniform as they did in 1929 with a few minor changes to accommodate automatic pistols, and the replacement of boots and breeches. The uniforms are the same weight as they were in 1929…100% wool and it gets hot and humid in ‘jersey. Some idiot on their Executive Staff (imagine that) tried a SS shirt with a tie and the troops went nuts-o! Then they tried to make female Troopers wear differently styled covers than the males, and everybody went nuts-o again!

I think the highway patrol in Philadelphia have a similar story, those Yankee chips like to take the stiffener out of the brim of their caps and sort of fold then down on the sides, quite odd looking.

The Philadelphia Highway Patrol is a division of their Police Department that handles the highways and traffic enforcement in the Philly PD jurisdiction. I had dealings with them one lonnnnngggg summer a few years ago. They have a very distinctive uniform, a lot of motorcycles and they wear cavalry boots. I can tell you some stories about the Penn State Patrol as well (If you stood one of them beside a SCHP officer you’d think they were in the same force, their uniforms and cars are almost identical)

I guess you are aging and I’m really not interested in the dealings you had with Pennsylvania State Police. Hell Marshall Dillon and Wyatt Earp had more regard for “serving and protecting” than some of the clowns we have today.

Easy math, count the number of Troopers, multiply by number of uniforms per trooper, add in the number of uniforms kept in inventory for replacement, add in the sewing fees for patches, etc. Then figure in that the patch and cars have grey on them, and that is just what I can think of off my head. THIS IS NUTS and it will cost SC citizens a fortune. When will this madness stop. Folks, teh civil war has been over more than a hundred years. The South Carolina Highway Patrol’s uniforms have won a number of awards as a well-designed uniform. They need to not mess with a good thing.

What exactly is a Road Dog? The troopers that I know tolerate the term bear and the retired troopers are referred to as “Silver Bears”. Some of the brand new guys wear those absurd “Road Dawg” shirts but the ones that are dry behind the ears wouldn’t touch it. What does the term mean and what is the history of it?

There is a lot more being said on here that causes me greater concern than the fact that you are clueless to even explain the term. The that you can read all of the comments on here and be more concerned about a pay raise than the integrity and fairness of your leaders is probably my greatest concern. You are an example of the democratic philosophy of throwing money at a problem and it will go away.
The fact that serious allegations have been made against your Director, Colonel, Lt Colonel, Majors, Captains, Lieutenants, Sergeants, and fellow road dogs (whatever the hell that is), and others and your first concern is your pay makes me question your morals and indicates that you are part of the problem. If you go to work everyday and don’t notice the corruption around you then you aren’t much of an investigator.
If you are aware of it and are afraid to speak about it then you are an example of why things need to change.

Owing to our climate, I suggest light colors. Maybe white would be best, and they could add a string tie.
Most of our roads are grey so if we care about offending people maybe the way to get the roads repaired is to claim their grey coloring is offensive to others.
The SCHP uniform is set in law by our General Assembly. They should fire Smith as soon as possible, and not budget a cent towards any foolishness like this. The racial imbalance in the Executive/Command staff is reprehensible as is the discipline meted out against predominately white Troopers.

This is Stupid…The Uniforms have nothing to do with the colors of the Confederacy and I think spending that kind of money would jeopardize any further funding the SCHP would get for additional troopers they need that they seem to be dropping like flies!
The Highway Patrol’s uniforms were inspired by the Pennsylvania State Police, and were designed for comfort and convenience while patrolling on motorcycles. Heavy leather gloves, called gauntlets, and black leather jackets were worn for protection against the elements. Trousers had a black stripe down the outside seam and fit closely from the knee to the ankle, like jodhpurs. For a short while, leather puttees were used, but those were replaced by black leather knee length boots. Both the trousers and shirts were made of grey material with a bow tie of black leather snapped on the shirt collar. The uniform was topped by a visored cap of the type still worn by motorcycle police in many of our larger cities.
I think they should change to color to Purple and Pink Ties. Unfortunately I supported Haley in two elections she she will not get anything else from me. I thought Leroy also would be OK but he is just another P>O.S. with inherited from the swamp!
