BUT HE ISN’T GOING TO GO QUIETLY, EITHER …

|| By FITSNEWS || S.C. Senator Lee Bright says he won’t filibuster a bill to remove the Confederate flag from its current location on the north lawn of the S.C. State House … but that doesn’t mean he’s going to roll over on the issue.

The Upstate, S.C. lawmaker – who recently referred to the flag’s proposed removal as a “Stalinist purge” – has been leading the fight to keep the controversial banner up in the aftermath of last month’s horrific, racially motivated church shooting in Charleston, S.C. that left nine black worshippers dead.

There are more than enough votes in the State Senate to lower the flag – even assuming you subscribe to the argument that doing so requires a two-thirds majority (we believe a simple majority would suffice).  That two-thirds majority also means there are enough votes to sit Bright down in the event he stages a filibuster – although doing so would set a precedent for future debate.

Bright apparently isn’t willing to go that far … although we’re told the Upstate lawmaker has “big plans” for the upcoming debate.

Opponents of the flag’s presence on the grounds say they are prepared to deal with multiple amendments from Bright.

Among them?  A proposal to decide the flag’s fate via a constitutional amendment as well as a proposal to replace the current banner with a different version of the Confederate flag (for more on the various banners associated with this debate, click here).

Bright has already announced his referendum plan via Facebook.

“I’m introducing an amendment that would allow South Carolina voters to decide whether or not the Confederate battle flag should fly,” he wrote.  “This flag is a part of our heritage, so the people of this state should have the final say.”

Okay …

Of course there was no referendum in 1961 when the Confederate flag – surrendered by the forces of General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox in 1865 – was temporarily re-raised.  Nor was there a referendum the following year when this temporary provision was extended indefinitely.  Nor was there one in 2000, when a bipartisan, biracial compromise moved the flag from the dome (and from within the S.C. House and State Senate chambers) to its current location.

Why should there be a referendum now?

There shouldn’t be …

The flag is coming down.  As it should.  When it should.

If Bright wishes to hold a statewide referendum to raise it … again …  well, he’s welcome to try.  He’ll never get the two-thirds majority in both chambers that he needs to place such a referendum on the ballot (and polls show such a measure would be unsuccessful, anyway), but hey … we wouldn’t stand in the way of such an effort.

As for Bright’s filibuster?  Well, we’re surprised he decided not to go that route … as that represented his best bet for stopping the flag removal legislation.

Why did he decide against it?  Good question …

We’ll let you know when we know something …

UPDATE: Well, well …

Why do you keep telling people to burn flags? Do you hate America that much? If you were a patriot you’d be asking them not to.

I think secretly you want people to burn flags, you traitor.

You condoned w/ the flag July 1, 2015 at 2:20 pm

So if taking down the flag stops Christians from being murdered, you are responsible for not saying anything until now. Why did you sit silent, and let those black people be murdered? You are awash in guilt.

Don’t blame the man one bit.Just like I don’t blame Haley for taking the lead in taking the confederate flag down. When lib/soc don’t get their way they loot and burn. Nikki saved Charleston and South Carolina from a LA,Baltimore or Ferguson x 100, in my opinion.

Flag will come down. Then the lib/soc can start working on the American flag.

Yep – Haley didn’t take the lead. That’s a bunch of crap. Tom Davis and others took the lead, Haley just jumped in front of it to get herself show to BWM, Volvo and Boeing as doing something about it before the came knocking on her door. We have the votes, now lets get that danged rag down.

I don’t think the flag had anything to do with those deaths. You cannot stop a drug-driven mentally-ill fool. And committing a crime that can be deemed racist is a guarantee for infamy. You’d only ignore those Christians if they were white, and the killer was black.
But I don’t care if the flag is there are not. You believe it resulted in death, and you let those people die. You were too coward to demand the flag come down, even though you now say it’s responsible. You are dirty and guilty.

Reply

There was no vote to raise it. No vote to take it down. No vote to put a different version in the present monument and raise it. All that has been done so far with it has been by legislative fiat. There was no legitimate reason for any of it. Why should there now be a vote on the issue?

From what I can gather, being from N.C. , the proper flag is the crescent and palm tree on a red flag. Why don’t they put that one up ? It is historically correct and should not be as in your face as the present flag.

The whole gorget argument seems strange to me because in each flag I’ve seen so far the orientation doesn’t seem to reflect how a gorget is worn.

It’s not the flag’s fault that innocent people were killed. Yes, he used it as a prop but the flag didn’t kill those people just like the gun didn’t kill them. This EVIL person killed those people. There is a lot of evil in this world today and the evil people do not want us to come together against the evil they want us separated and fighting each other over unimportant things instead of standing together to fight the real problems. Read the Bible. We are in the end times. Prophecies are coming true more and more every day. PEOPLE GET READY!!! JESUS IS COMING!!!!

And they have the right o do so on private property, and I want them to have that opportunity. But the State House is public property, and I don’t want a divisive, racist symbol flying over it. And now I see Senator Shithead is now fundraising using flag stickers to raise money for his campaign. If could only use that campaign money to pay all his personal debts, then he would singlehandedly boost the GDP of Roebuck by 50%.

Bright knows that voting to remove the flag will be political suicide for anyone in the SC statehouse, but voting for his referendum to let the SC voters decide gives them a way out. They will vote for the referendum so they can tell opponents of the flag “we have addressed the flag issue”. Bright knows SC voters will NEVER vote to remove the Confederate flag because polls show that six in 10 South Carolinians support flying the flag, and that includes 27% of the African American population in SC, many of whom had ancestors who fought for the Confederacy.

Contrary to popular belief there were more black soldiers in the CSA Army than the US Army (which only belatedly allowed blacks to serve in the Civil War in segregated units) The CSA army was fully integrated from 1861 on with blacks serving alongside whites at the first battle of Manassas. There is a very complicated history down in SC that the out of towners who want this flag removed don’t understand. When the vast majority of the white population, and more than a quarter of the black population in SC still supports flying the Confederate flag on the grounds of the SC statehouse, that flag is not going anywhere, I don’t care how bad the Indian Sikh immigrant governor, the NAACP, carpet baggers from up north, and the liberal elites in the MSM want it removed.
