FORMER TIGER PUTS ON A SHOW AT NFL COMBINE
|| By FITSNEWS || Last September we wrote an article entitled “Vic Beasley Is Delusional,” referring to the former Clemson University standout’s contention that he was a “better player” than 2014 No. 1 NFL draft pick Jadeveon Clowney, a unanimous All-American at the University of South Carolina.
Well guess what … Beasley may not have been so delusional after all.
The 6-foot-3, 246-pound pass rusher put on a clinic for NFL scouts over the weekend in Indianapolis, Indiana – showing off a potent combination of speed, strength and agility that silenced his critics and boosted his draft stock.
Beasley ran the forty-yard dash in a blazing fast 4.53 seconds – matching Clowney’s mark from a year ago. But it was his performance on the bench press that really raised eyebrows. Beasley lifted 225 pounds an impressive 35 times – or fourteen more reps than Clowney turned in last year.

Beasley’s speed and strength were the tops among all linebackers at the combine … meaning it’s no longer a question of “if” he gets selected in the first round of the NFL draft in April, but “where.” Both the New Orleans Saints (pick No. 13) and Pittsburgh Steelers (pick No. 22) need outside rush help … and after his combine performance we don’t see any way Beasley slips out of the top two dozen picks.
“It’s time to acknowledge that Beasley is one of the top pass-rushing prospects in the 2015 class,” NFL.com reported. “He has silenced critics questioning his size, strength and power.”
That’s for sure …
It’s also time for us to revisit our remarks from six months ago … giving Beasley credit where credit is due. Now, to be fair Clowney has clearly not been playing at 100 percent since his breakout sophomore campaign in 2012. In fact some question whether the 6-foot-5, 266-pound defensive end will ever be the same player after undergoing risky microfracture surgery on his right knee last December.
The Houston Texans – who took Clowney with the top overall pick last year – sounded an optimistic tone last week, with head coach Bill O’Brien saying Clowney was on “the right track” in his rehabilitation.
Let’s hope so …
Our view? Both Clowney and Beasley are insanely gifted athletes who have the potential to consistently dominate even the best NFL offensive linemen.
In fact we hope they’re able to keep this “better player” debate going over the coming decade on the NFL gridiron … because that would be something to watch.
For now, though, it’s safe to say Beasley has made a pretty compelling case …

Right, but the point is that you used the on-field argument to make the case that Beasley isn’t necessarily better than Clowney (and I don’t agree that Beasley is better, fyi). That’s like saying Germone Hopper is better than Pharoh Cooper because Hopper beat Cooper on the field. It’s a stupid argument, THAT is the point. But you ALWAYS miss the point, so what’s new?
But it’s OK for FITS to take a combine workout – that was not on-field – to extrapolate that Beasley is better than Clowney…

Look Dork. He’s not saying Beasley is better. He’s saying Beasley wasn’t delusional to make the statement. Their combine performance is similar, and in Beasley’s favor, the reps were better. Now, put up their stats through their first three years in college and compare those. Then you can say, XX was a better college player. As for the pros, time will tell.

Beasley has the upper body strength that Clowney has never had(or had the work ethic to develop).
I called that out last year btw and someone posted some BS response about “core” strength/balance.
Clowney should have been converted to tight end. It’s debatable as to whether he has the genes to be an upper body freak in the NFL anyway even if he had the work ethic.
Shit, take a look at Corey Miller’s upper body(at linebacker none the less) and tell me that Clowney could ever compare.(and Miller is fat/out of shape now too)
Vick has the work ethic that Clowney does not. Vick is not a show boater. And Vick is a pretty smart guy too. Add to all of that he is pretty good on the piano as well. He will go into the NFL and quietly do his thing, makes lots of money, take his degree when he is tired of hitting around in the NFL, and be able to support himself just fine long after his football career is over. So much more to this young man.
Clowney was born a freakish athlete. By sheer force of will, Beasley has made himself into a freakish athlete. If I had to choose, I’d take the guy who worked his way to the top over the guy who was born there.

Beasley is a monster, and I don’t want to take anything away from his performance at the Combine. I certainly hope he has a long and amazing career filled with highlights we can all enjoy for years. However, I would like to provide a little bit of perspective for analyzing the natural athletic ability of these two freaks. While Beasley’s 4.53 second 40 time is incredibly impressive, Clowney’s was more so, because while Beasley weighs 236lbs, Clowney checks in at 266lbs. He’s a full 30 pounds heavier than Beasley is, and just as fast. I very much hope Clowney is able to return to full speed and the debate about which of these two is “better” goes on for years! Whoever drafts Beasley is getting an absolute beast.
Point of Order…Beasley weighed an honest 246 lbs at the combine and measured taller than his Clemson published height. You are regurgitating his Clemson football roster weight and height, which all the draft “pundits” also used to denigrate him. Colleges underestimate some players and overestimate weight and height for others. I think this is to confuse opposing teams who are scouting them.
Anyway, Clowney has a couple inches on Beasley and the corresponding, proportional weight. Clowney is not superior simply for carrying more weight because he had more muscle mass to move it.
Point of physics…Newton’s second law says force equals mass times acceleration. This means Clowney, carrying more mass and going the same speed as Beasley, is generating more force than Beasley is while doing so. Generating more force, in my opinion, is more impressive and makes one more valuable according to that specific attribute.
I am not saying Clowney is more valuable than Beasley as an overall player, or is a better athlete overall, simply that his 40 yard dash time is more impressive. Both are tremendous athletes, and Beasley has several other qualities which make him extremely valuable, it’d be pointless to debate their relative overall values until both of their careers are over. Hopefully, that won’t happen for a long time and these two great athletes will give us tons of incredible highlights.
