GOVERNOR BAILS ON HER FORMER MOVEMENT
|| By FITSNEWS || Last week we wrote a post recapping the various national and state elected officials participating in this year’s big South Carolina Tea Party convention in Myrtle Beach, S.C. – which has attracted an overflow crowd of hundreds of conservative activists (yet still managed to run like a well-oiled machine).
Representing the home state at this big shin-dig? S.C. attorney general Alan Wilson and half of the South Carolina congressional delegation – U.S. Reps. Jeff Duncan, Mick Mulvaney and Tom Rice (the latter of whom is about as “Tea Party” as Barack Obama).
Who didn’t make the trip, though? S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley – who stormed to the “Republican” nomination for governor of South Carolina 2010 on a wave of Tea Party support.
“Where’s Nikki?” one organizer of the Tea Party convention asked FITS. “Is she too good for us now?”
That’s a question we heard often … and no one asking it seemed to have a good reason as to why Haley wouldn’t show up for the event.
We wonder … is Haley’s absence due to the fact she completely abandoned her Tea Party roots during her first term as governor to pursue a big government agenda on taxes, spending, education and (most notably) government-subsidized health care?
Hmmmm …
We weren’t the only ones asking that question …
“Isn’t (Haley) supposed to be the ‘Tea Party’ darling?” asked Joshua Cook – a liberty activist who has been working (successfully, we might add) to defeat several local tax hike initiatives in the Palmetto State. “I guess she just got elected so what does she care.”
It wasn’t just that Haley didn’t show. Unlike Tea Party icon Sarah Palin – whose endorsement helped propel Haley to victory in 2010 – she didn’t even bother to send a video message to the gathering.
“Nikki wouldn’t even do that,” Cook said.
“What I want to know is why isn’t she coming here telling us what her solution is to our road issues,” Cook added. “I hope she will stand firm against the Chamber of Commerce and the trucking industry lobby and oppose any form of gas tax increase.”
Cook is referring to the “Gas Tax Trickeration” exposed by this website earlier this month – an estimated $800 million annual tax hike on which Haley has yet to take a position.
Anyway …
We’ve been writing for years about Haley’s conversion from Tea Party diva to establishment “Republican,” so the fact she dissed her home state’s Tea Party convention isn’t all that surprising. What is surprising (and a little bit encouraging)? That Haley’s move to the “dark side” hasn’t bolstered her national prospects.
