VOTER TURNOUT HITS A 72-YEAR LOW …

By FITSNEWS  ||  America isn’t a Democracy, it’s a Republic: One in which citizens are decreasingly interested in participating, it would appear.

According to preliminary data from the United States Elections Project, only 36.3 percent of eligible voters cast ballots – the lowest total since 1942.  That’s down from 2010’s 41.8 percent mark, according to the project’s researchers – who hail from the University of Florida.

How to explain this historically low voter participation?  It’s really quite simple …

First, most Americans feel they have no real choice at the polls.  Ours is a country in search of a new leadership option … but that option isn’t there.  Polls show the independent streak among the electorate is a mile wide – featuring all sorts of diverse ideological breakdowns – but neither party is responding to the basic needs being articulated.

And what are those needs?  Well, for starters people want government out of their homes, businesses  and bank accounts (absent a compelling reason) … and our troops out places they don’t belong … a fiscally conservative, socially libertarian matrix that incorporates the GOP’s stated (yet unpracticed) support for less government and more individual liberty and the Democratic party’s support for justice and tolerance.

It’s not just the surging independent voters adopting this basic matrix, either.  Huge chunks of party-line voters are also ready to break off from the two-party establishment in its direction.

Take this report from the Virginia-based Market Research Foundation, which found that “31 percent of Democrats broke with their party on the issue of government spending” while “thirty-three percent of Republicans were likely to break from their party’s ranks on the issue of gay marriage.”

These fractures would turn into Grand Canyon-sized chasms … if only these voters had an alternative.

Second, who has time for the lesser of two evils?

People are so busy trying to make ends meet in the “New Normal” two-party America has created they barely have time to vote – let alone figure out which side of the “Heads They Win, Tails You Lose” coin their ballot should land on.

So they stay home …

This problem could – and should – be solved by making Election Day a national holiday, as Richard Manning of Americans for Limited Government recently suggested.  In fact we agree with Manning that such a move would not only increase voter participation – but enhance the legitimacy of the electoral process by reducing the fraud associated with alternative voting methods.

This website has long maintained there is nothing wrong with America that cannot be fixed by unleashing the power of the marketplace.  Hell, our country became the greatest civilization the planet has ever seen because its founders recognized freedom and free markets were indispensable to the protection and preservation of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Of course it’s now headed into the crapper at the moment because our current leaders – “Republicans” and Democrats – are rushing headlong in the opposite direction.

Choice and competition fuel innovation and progress – and nowhere do we need choice and competition more urgently right now than at the ballot box.

What this country needs more than anything is honest politicians and informed voters.—- oh shit.—- WE ARE DOOMED.

We need more of what we got Nov.4. TOTAL Repudiation of FAILURE by the Democrat Party, and more whining by liberal sycophants like FITS…

With one more election we can TOTALLY Transform this country BACK to a semblance of decency and law.

You don’t know much about the rest of country. Heck, you probably don’t know much about anything beyond the little room your computer is in.

Ever hear of Iowa, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Florida, Alaska, Ohio, Utah, Illinois, Texas????…..They all went to the GOP.

And yet, no Republican will win the Presidency in 2016. Funny how that works. Remember 1996, remember 2008, remember 2012. Of course you don’t. This election was most likely the last gasp for the white conservative Republican vote. Using unsubstantiated fear as a motivator for your base can only work for so long. Especially when that base is dying off without much to replace it. Don’t let the mindset you foster in this echo chamber get SC confused with the rest of the country.

Who do you see the Republicans winning the Presidency in 2016 with?

Yes indeed. In the past 6 years (since Obama was elected), Republicans have picked-up:

11 senate seats
72 house seats
9 governorships
control of a majority of state legislatures-picked-up over 1400 seats in those state legislatures-2 of 10 seats in 6 years!!!

Need the White House to reverse his judicial appointments.

Won’t change a fucking thing

You are living in La-la land!!!!!

fuck both Republicans and Democrats equally is what I say!!!!

No party has done jack shit is 30 years except kick the can down the road

It is the equivalent of saying “I promise to just put the head in”!!!

Neither political party is worth a bucket of warm spit as they stand now!!!!

Any actual names? Not trying to knock the Repblicans, but surely they have some one waiting in the wings.

guest November 13, 2014 at 2:43 pm

I can name 10.
How about Democrats? Won’t be Hillary. She has a brain injury and will never recover from her surgery.
Joe Biden? LMAO.

Wondering November 13, 2014 at 2:48 pm

Not interested in Hillary or the Dems in general. Just looking for one Rep name. Why is that so hard? Not a good sign.

If you don’t already know, you likely need to be reading another – more elementary – source than me.

What you got on November 4 was 39% turnout in SC. Don’t be stupid enough to assume that will be the case in 2016.

Hmmm… No mention of the unlimited cash flowing to campaigns as a result of the Supreme Court decision in Citizens United. Simple oversight? You decide.

Add in the lack of confidence in “faith-based voting” where ballots are cast on unverifiable and unrecountable touch-screen systems. does anyone not suspect just a little bit that Alvin Greene didn’t really get that many votes? Sure was beneficial for DeMint, eh?

You should listen to these Cato CDs. Nothing wrong with unlimited money from corporate interests in politics. Nope. Who cares if Cato is funded by those very same corporate interests? I’m confident they’ve got no bias.

Here in Colorado we had ballots mailed to us a couple of weeks before Election Day that could be returned by mail, drop box or in person. This was the most pleasant voting experience I ever had. Maybe even to first time I’ve voted in a mid term election. Every state should look into adopting this model.

How is voter apathy cured by making election day a federal holiday?

If I don’t care to vote, and then election day is made it a federal holiday….I still don’t care to vote. If voter options suck, how is making election day a federal holiday going to enhance voter options?

“America isn’t a Democracy its a Republic.”

What a absolutely dumb statement. If I hear that one more time I think I will go nuts. Do they print that on stickers sold by Glen Beck?
WE ARE A DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC. How little the tea nut types know about our constitution, history, and government never ceases to amaze me.

Democratic Republic – a country that is both a republic and a democracy. It is one where ultimate authority and power is derived from the citizens, and the government itself is run through elected officials.

First, I agree that many elections don’t really present a good choice. Yes, we can get whipped up over one or two issues, but every other issue is locked down by the establishment no matter which way we vote.

Second, low voter participation is the goal of the Republicans. The majority of Americans vote for Democrats. In fact, in 2012, Democrats won more votes than Republicans for the House of Representatives. Only gerrymandering kept Republicans in control. The simple fact is when more Americans vote, Democrats do better.

Only one of the two parties wants more voters to turn out.
