Parsing the distinction between “civil union” and “marriage” again.
In point of fact, a purely religious rite of marriage is not recognized by the state unless the officiant can truly speak the words “by the power invested in me by the state, I now pronounce you married.”

Don’t you get pissed with Obama and Holder pick which laws to follow and which ones they say are wrong??? Isn’t it his job to represent the people in these matters, whether or not he believes in them? Sure he is going to lose and the taxpayer will spend money to defend it, but when we voted for the amendment of the Constitution banning it, you should of known damn well money would be spent defending it.

Spending money to fight a rearguard action that will inevitably end in defeat doesn’t sound like fiscal conservatism to me. The AGs in North Carolina and West Virginia, two states that are also culturally conservative, have thrown in the towel rather than waste taxpayer money. Alan Wilson doesn’t look very good in comparison.
There is no “taxpayer money” being spent here. The AG’s office is handling it – no outside counsel – therefore no extra dollars.
Taxpayers pay the salary and benefits of the employees at the AG’s office. If they stop wasting time on this dead issue, they could spend time rooting out public corruption or prosecuting pedophiles or…

Marriage isn’t under the purview of any religion, church, or congregation. It is an individual right. The mere fact that you can “change congregations” to suit your own personal beliefs makes the notion that an individual congregation has some kind of say so over who you can marry entirely pointless.
