DEMOCRAT: TIME TO MOVE FLAG FROM STATE’S “FRONT LAWN”
By FITSNEWS || Democratic gubernatorial candidate Vincent Sheheen joined a group of South Carolina mayors in calling for the removal of the Confederate flag from the grounds of the S.C. State House.
“Today, we are charting a new path for South Carolina focusing on the future, not the past,” Sheheen said. “Leadership matters, and we must speak up for things that are right and abandon the divisive politics of the past. To compete in the global economy we must welcome and keep the best and the brightest, so we must fly a flag that brings us all together. We must be a state that looks forward, towards a future of possibilities not backwards to discord. To honor our forebears and to promote unity, it’s time to move the Confederate Flag from the front lawn of our Statehouse.”
Joining Sheheen was S.C. Rep. Bakari Sellers (D-Bamberg), who is running for lieutenant governor.
A group of eight mayors – including scandal-scarred Columbia, S.C. mayor Steve Benjamin – joined Sheheen and Sellers in arguing for the flag’s removal.
“We agree with you: South Carolina should fly the American flag instead of the Confederate flag in front of the Statehouse,” the mayors wrote in a letter to Sheheen. “The Confederate flag should be reverently moved to a museum where it will honor the soldiers who fought and died for South Carolina.”
For those of you keeping score at home, Sheheen’s opponent – S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley – is on the record supporting the flag’s presence on the State House grounds.
Worth noting? Sheheen’s move comes as one recent poll shows Haley enjoying a 10-point lead in their rematch of the 2010 gubernatorial election, which Haley narrowly won.
“It’s the definition of a Hail Mary,” one political observer told FITS.
The Confederate flag dominated headlines during the 2000 Republican presidential primary in South Carolina – resulting in the Palmetto State receiving literally months of bad press. In April 2000, the S.C. Senate voted 33-7 to remove the flag from the dome of the S.C. State House – and from inside the House and Senate chambers.
As part of the compromise, though, a smaller version of the flag was raised behind a Confederate soldiers’ monument on the north lawn of the State House complex.
“Off the dome and in your face,” supporters used to say.
Despite the compromise, the NAACP is still enforcing a totally ineffective tourism boycott against South Carolina, while the NCAA is refusing to hold collegiate athletic tournaments in the Palmetto State. Meanwhile some Democratic lawmakers have attempted to discourage football recruits from attending the University of South Carolina and Clemson University as a result of the flag’s presence.
In the fall of 2009, we asked our readers what they thought of the Confederate flag’s current location on the State House grounds. According to our survey, forty-one percent of FITS readers (723 votes) wanted the flag to stay right where it is. Thirty-four percent (599 votes) wanted it to go back on top of the State House dome. Finally, twenty-six percent (458 votes) want it to be removed from the State House grounds altogether and placed in a museum.
We’ll run another poll at the end of this article to see where people stand today.
What do we think?
As we’ve noted previously, this issue strikes us as pointless. We believe symbols like the Confederate flag – or any other flag – are utterly meaningless. How come? Because they can be used by anybody to advance anything … just like political labels.
“State leaders can leave it, move it, burn it or use it as a bath towel for all we care,” we wrote back in 2011.
What do you think? Vote in our poll and post your thoughts in our comments section below.

@fitsnews Seems like a pretty strong gambit, to me. High risk, high reward move on his part.

@fitsnews one final act of desperation! Race card well played Mr. Sheheen!

Egads, what a disaster Sheheen is for the Dems.
He’s got a laundry list of failures by Haley to use in formulating an effective political attack, and yet decides that the Confederate flag is a way to win the election….what a moron.
LMAO!!!!!!!!
My apologies to Tom Ervin.I went on the record saying Tom would only get 2%-3% of the electorate to vote for him.
I was wrong. With this announcement I have him polling at 12%…Sheheen at 33% and Haley @55%.
What a joke.Maybe Sheheen can bus the Ferguson protesters to the Statehouse for a rally and have the Kenyan with Ebola speak?
What a race baiting clown!
By no fault of his own, Sheehan is a disconnected yuppy boy. He will learn from mistakes. He is not ready for the big time, yet. He would be better off running for Congress or the US Senate. With SC growing in population, more district have to be created.
Maybe Sheheen can find a Civil War veteran’s widow and film an ad at the State House? Have Nancy Pelosi narrate it.
Touching.
Is that you again smirks?
He would be better off leaving South Carolina, because we don’t want him.
I’m 10 points behind. I have to do something big. What will it be? I’ve got it – I’ll rehash an issue that will surely alienate some of my supporters and make me anathema to hordes of independents.
Idiot…
Good God what a mistake!
I cannot stand haley; but, this is a double mistake.
One making this an issue, the other being seen with Benjamin! He is carrying more baggage than the Orient Express baggage car!
Aligning oneself with a bunch of race baiters is the true mark of desperation.
Using Al Sharpton’s name as a moniker is the mark of a gutless race-baiting cracker.
He is not a cracker. He is a camel jockey. I am Scots Irish . I am a cracker!
I thought that was a potato knewgrow?
He’s not Caucasian, he’s part Lebanese.
Using Voltaire’s name as a moniker, when lacking any true wit, is an abomination.
Cracker? He’s from Georgia?
Where does Ervin stand on this issue? At 3.9% he owes the voters his opinion on this matter.
If this is an example of the kinds of decisions he’d make in office, his loss doesn’t really mean much. It’s like picking which retard you want to captain the SS SCTitanic.
Doing something like that would cost the SC taxpayers millions in law suits, try another example.
Vince, David here. Have you lost your mind?!
I think this is actually a good move. He is behind what does he have to lose? The move does not hurt him with any of his likely voters and now puts Haley in a position to either defend the flag or agree with him.
If she defends the flag she hurts herself if she wants to run for any national office, say VP for example. If she agrees with him she hurts herself in SC.
If she stays silent she gets hammed by the press and ultimately gets saddled with her prior comments supporting the flag.
If she has any hopes of holding a nationally elected office she has to come out against the flag, nobody in their right mind would vet her otherwise.
Huh? Where does Tom Ervin stand? Haley is already on the “record”. Ervin throws a tantrum about not being in the debates @ 3.9% yet won’t discuss this issue?
Better yet, since his views are so earth shattering, despite not in this race (or really his own), I wonder what T-Rav has to say?
National office will mean nothing in a few years. Jefferson Davis was right. The large centralized government that was forced on us in 1865 is imploding. Our founding fathers never meant for the government to be this big and cancerous. It is unsustainable. It is Chrystal clear and as plain as the nose on your face. The wrong side won the War Between the States! But one thing for sure: the liberals don’t have the balls or the stomach to do it again. After 150 years we know how much we lost. We lost a civilization to a third world culture with a chimp in charge!
You should edit that last sentence, but I agree with your sentiments. The South will be independent in the near future.
Smirks is thaf you?
You forgot her actual strategy- ignore the shit out of Sheheen and the flag issue (just stick to your quiet endorsement of the status quo and cruise to the win in a few weeks). Seems to be working pretty well.
I think that will prove short sighted. If she has aspirations for a national office she has to address the flag issue.
However, in my opinion she has no real stand on any issue, her stand is whatever benefits her personally. So, my prediction is that she will ignore the flag issue before the election but once she is re-elected she will come out against the flag before she leaves office.
Mark. It. Down.
Very possible, but what you call “short-sighted” her people call “winning in November,” which is mission numero uno right about now. She has years to get her positions lined up for a national or corporate gig down the road.
they could end up wining the battle and losing the war, look at all the baggage she has collected in just one term.
Again, true enough. In politics, though, there can only really be one race and that’s the next one.
Considering how Conservative women are treated by the drive-by Leftist media establishment in America, I seriously doubt she’s planning on running for higher office, except maybe the US Senate – and last time I checked both of South Carolina’s US Senators (current and previous) were supporters of the 2000 Compromise and it did not hurt their chances of election.
I think that when this election is over, Sheheen will simply crawl back to his labor union buddies so he can wash their cars and kiss their asses for another four years. The flag issue will fall and the anti-flag/pro-racist folks with go quiet again until the next four years.
As for the idea of Haley turning her coat after re-election, she might, but remember the odds would be very long against any attempt to remove that flag now. Not only does it not have anywhere near the 2/3 majority in both state house and senate, but the Left lost the moral high ground the moment it labeled anyone who honors that flag a “racist” regardless of who they were. The NAACP can continue their failed boycott, the NCAA can continue to get on their knees for them, but in the long run they only hurt themselves.
The view that flag is a racist symbol is falling out of style. Good Southern people (of all races) are standing up against its misuse by white supremacists and their power to use that flag effectively as a tool of hate will be virtually non-existent in 30 years.
Believe me that flag will be there for a very long time, and South Carolina will grow and progress – in a proper and meaningful way, not by the double-standard morally ambiguous concepts of the Leftist Establishment.
I wonder how many East Indians fought in the Civil War ? Your point is a good one. Can’t wait for her answer !
Or she can ignore the whole pointless issue, just like she did when Will Folkes claimed to have enjoyed a rendezvous with her.
Considering the fact that she already has a history of defending the flag, this isn’t going to do anything except help her margin of victory.
So what you’re saying is that in order to advance her own political career, Nikki Haley (who as a Conservative woman will be branded another potential Sarah Palin no matter how much she’d bend over backward for the Establishment US Media) must throw the vast majority of her supporters under the bus by siding with those who label them “racists” for no better reason than honoring a living symbol of their own Southern identity. That she must for all intents and purposes condemn the flag itself, and consign it to white supremacists who have no valid claim to it and who’s misuse of it is loudly rejected by legitimate Confederate fraternal organizations.
I’m sorry but I don’t see how that benefits anyone, least of all Governor Haley.
The Sheheens smoothly converted from Muslims to ambulance chasers. Praise Allah.
And Allstate.
And Allstate.
If the blacks are boycotting then what is all the bitching about Black Biker week.
Maybe the business owners in Myrtle Beach need a big old Rebel Flag just like the Bowery.
It would be nice to see a photo of Nikki with a Confederate flag backdrop, priceless.
Nikki loves the Co9nfederate flag, her supporters in India lost their lives defending the State of SC.
Wouldn’t be a FITS poll if it wasn’t missing the correct option:
D) Who cares?
Ha! Well we don’t care (as noted) but we like our polls to give people specific options to see which one they really prefer. Not caring is not voting in the poll ;)
#disenfranchised.
Bravo ……TwitterBubbaGolstein…
+5 points and a “fitsnews franchise”
Will:
I disagree. (BTW I see Smirks beat me to it). I don’t care either. My vote of “don’t care” does show what I prefer. It further shows that this is a ridiculous issue. In fact, this argument is a complete manifestation of the entire political system’s ineptitude–the fact that we want to argue over a flag (and its placement) more than we want to tackle employment, health care, economy, etc.
Sic….your such a good sport…. :)
How can someone not care about their symbols being attacked? My ancestors fought for that flag, it is the South’s flag, why wouldn’t I care that someone wants to defile it?
If it were up to the likes of him, we would just erase and re-write history. Period. Nothing like a democrat keeping racial issues stirred while trying to ignore that history actually took place. We cannot change what is in the past. What we can do is move forward in a different direction; together as a country. Not as one race versus another. Wake up, people! There are WAY more issues t be concerned over than where a flag is flying. Leave it be, and move on to a worthwhile issue!
This is dumb politics all around. His removal call will cost him as many votes as it will gain him. For Haley, her support of the flag does the same. Gains her a few wobblers who might have gone Libertarian or sat out, but cost her a few more enlightened GOPers. It is South Carolina’s third rail.
Sheheen should have promised ot would be his secret plan to end the Vietnam War –i.e., first priority AFTER I start my second term.
And FITS, as much as the right likes to think the tourism boycott is totally ineffective, there is no way to prove a negativeAND it has cost the state some NCAA athletic events in the past.
Colonial Life is big enough to host a basketball regional and we have not.
Trying to stir the black vote over something trivial , no doubt. Easy to see .. .lol. There are much more serious issues South Carolina faces and that need urgent attention than some flag on the people’s property. Where in the hell is his brain? Oh yeah. He’s a young whipper snapper. South Carolina needs a governor with wisdom and proven leadership skills. Not another amateur who wants a shot at ‘on the job training.’
What SC needs is my great-great-grandfather, Wm. T. Sherman, to purify it. Again.
Well, the only difference between you and your great-great-grandfather is that he wasn’t a basement dwelling pussy too fat to crawl up the stairs.
So in that regard, it’s a bit doubtful that SC will get what it needs.
You are the part of the Sherman that ran down the ass crack of a slave girl.
Yes, Sherman the terrorist whose troops targeted churches, homes, and schools for immolation…raping, murdering unarmed civilian non – combatants…women and children…widows and orphans…what a true hero!
Wasn’t W. T. Sherman some sort of mulatto?
I’d like to see him try it!
And Gilligan just threw in the towel.
Yes sir, he did. He will lose the baby boomer vote.
TBG supports a permanent ban on Vincent Sheheen from the Statehouse as well as the Governor’s Mansion
As far as the flag goes…we should have a binding referendum every five years with these choices :
Leave it where it is.
Put it back on the dome.
Incorporate it into our State Flag
Put it in the Museum.
Majority to win.
Democracy, Beetchez!
for the love of God… please put that freaking thing in a museum where it belongs.
Agree. But in my opinion, making it a campaign issue is not wise.
Better still, just burn the rag.
Flying a Confederate flag after coming in second in a Civil War, only in the South. At least the war was won for humanity. Grow up, dump the flag in a museum where it belongs.
Can we put the rainbow flag there too?
The flag is a symbol of Losers, by Losers, and for Losers. Just look at the Losers on this board who support it.
Wait, you don’t believe all these “conservatives” are celebrating their uh “heritage.”
Gee.
“At least the war was won for humanity.”
Don’t forget the Union too. (and taxes)
When’s the next ship to Liberia? I have some emancipated slaves to put on it.
the war was won for humanity.
Puh-lease.
My Family has lived in South Carolina for 323 years. Now its not that we lost the war, we won the battle. I say this this way because my family has fought in every war since this country started. The Flag issue is HERTIAGE not HATE., AND ANYONE WHOSE FAMILY HAS BEEN THERE OVER 100 YEARS.It ain’t got nothing to do with growing up if you don’t like move the hell out. SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bless your heart. My family has been here, fought in the Revolutionary war. The flag isn’t so much heritage as HATE. It became that a long time ago. Why don’t you leave as people like you are what is wrong with this country.
The HATE is coming out in the rhetoric of moronic liberals like you and Vinny. That flag doesn’t stop black people from eating at a Maurice Bessinger restaurant. It’s a totally manufactured non issue, we have so much more to focus on. Vinny is only desperately grabbing at straws to try to grab a few more votes.
Can someone please tell me what is the reason behind the Confederate flag being on state house grounds.
It was placed there in 1962 by the legislature on the one hundred year anniversary of the Civil War and to thumb their nose at the civil rights movement.
Not the whole story. The flag was traditionally flown from time to time to mark events in “Confederate history”. In 1962, Democrat goobernor Fritz Hollings, acting without any authority, ordered the flag to the dome permanently.
I believe the legislature voted to put the flag on the dome in 1962, if I remember correctly. Hollings no doubt signed the bill, but obviously not as a unilateral decision on his part. Keep in mind that SC Governor’s had very little power back then too.
The Senate passed a resolution to put it up, Hollings let it stay up
Fritz Hollings did that? Proud of him. :-)
Of course you would be, bubba. All you rednecks are.
To be truthful the Governor has very little power now.
SC is the ONLY state in the Union where this is even a discussion. Why?
Did you say Union and SC in the same sentence?
Not the case, Georgia went through an expensive flag debacle over the Confederate flag, Virginia gets challenges to their “avenue of honor”, this debate is alive and well all over the South.
Another”conservative” celebrating his”heritage.”
Not the case with me, just want to keep the debate honest.
SC is the ONLY state in the Union where this is even a discussion. Why?
A cadre of leftists, Yankee busybodies, race agitators/profiteers and useful idiots who want to *punish* SC for attempting to achieve independence 154 years ago?
And how did that attempt work out for you, Bubba?
Well…so far…
NOTTTTT TOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOD.
The flag still flies in SC because the state is irrelevant and no one outside the state wants to bother with it.
So go fuck yourself and debate your state issues on another blog. Douche .
Kiss my ass Inbred.
and no one outside the state wants to bother with it.
You really haven’t been paying attention.
this
Because Sheman made it an issue
Will:
Can you please include an option titled “Don’t Care–Aren’t There Entirely Larger Issues That Our Attention Could Be Better Used?” Or, you can simply title it “Don’t Care.”
Either way, I will cast a vote if this option becomes available.
Well said, Dave. Thank you.
Let’s put a big box around the statue of George Washington…you know he once owned slaves. ..
Exactly… Ole’ Dixie don’t stop blacks or whites from eating at Maurice Bessinger’s places, it’s only an issue in the minds of ultra liberal ultra butthurt morons.
Aunt Jean and Uncle Bob said this would work! Now all you folks are slamming me. Thanks, loads, friends.
Tell us, Vinny, exactly why did you vote for Jean Toal? Still ignoring the issue?
How can y’all be arguing about the flag, when everyone’s fixin’ to die from Ebola?
Electing a Democrat is worse than Ebola in this country.
It has been for the last 6 years–its just been a slower death.
I’ve never seen more confederate flags being flown than north of the Mason Dixon line.
and? this is relevant how?
Because race baiting idiots down here would have you believe it’s a southern thing.
No truer words could be spoken.
Hang around with northern skinheads, do ya?
Said no one else….ever.
Helluva band Live was with Ed.
“Today, we are charting a new path for South Carolina focusing on the future, not the past,” Sheheen said.
Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.”
– Someone said that –
The placement of the flag was part of a deal. Another part that deal was the construction of the African-American Monument on the State House grounds. Should that stay, or should it also be removed so as not to focus on the past?
Google search terms: African-American Monument South Carolina State House
The African-American Monument
http://www.usca.edu/aasc/african-americanmonument.htm
“In March of 2001, an event of note took place with the dedication of an African-American History Monument on the grounds of the South Carolina state capitol. State senator Darrell Jackson called it “a reflection of what can be done when all citizens work together in unity” (Bauerlein, “There are so many things,” 2001, A1, 12). The African-American Monument, the first such structure to be built on the grounds of a state capitol, had its genesis in a 1994 proposal for a state Heritage Act. Republican State Senator John Courson wrote the Heritage Act in an attempt to develop a compromise that would remove the Confederate flag from the State House dome. The legislation passed the state Senate but failed in the House. Two years later the state Senate passed another piece of legislation to create a monument, but the House refused to consider the bill. Two state senators, Darrell Jackson, an African-American Democrat, and Glenn McConnell, a white Republican, then tied the bill to an economic development proposal that Governor Beasley favored. Beasley responded by calling the legislature into special session, and the House passed both bills.”
Replace it with a Flag from ISIS would probably be Sheheen and the Obama Administration’s wish! Anything to do with something not of American origin! What has Shehhen said about the flag in the past. He hopes folks are stupid enough to buy into his ploy. America is being destroyed from within by folks like him!
— hope Ervin resists swinging at that tar baby. He’s the only candidate who just might have genuine integrity & enough sense to pour pee out of a boot.
I was thinking the same thing, my friend!
Since the African America History monument was part of the flag compromise I’m sure he wants to take sledge hammers and dynamite to the monument.
Word is he’s channeling Lincoln and plans to send it to Liberia as part of an exchange program. We send them the AA monument, they send us Ebola patients.
Word is you’re a lock for re-election as grand kleagle. But the minimum IQ for the job is 10, so it may not really be a lock.
Oh snap! Oh no you didn’t!
Sledge hammer the whole block, you think too small.
I get that this is a Hail Mary on Sheheen’s part, but even as a desperation ploy it sucks. He does know that this is SC, right? His sudden epiphany on the flag issue just caused those 17 crossover voters he had nailed down to stroll back over to Nikki.
YeH cross over is what he needed to win, with barakri on the ticket and already being a Dem, was he concerned he would get the black vote or something?!?
Correct, indeed. Strange move on his part, even as a drowning man move. He won’t pick up any black votes (he has 95% + of those already), and he definitely pissed off at least a few Joe Sixpack and Bubba voters who will now either stay home or vote for Haley as an FU to Sheheen. At least when he loses this time we won’t have to listen to his weak shit anymore (unless you live in his district, I guess). The money people seldom let these clowns run a third time…
Did anyone read the poll. Haley is below 45%. That means that over half of the state either does not like her or has some serious questions about her. You read it here first, Haley will lose in November!
Let’s hope. I still don’t believe it was a smart move on his part.
Vote independent then
What you are seeing here is the Republican,”non Republicans and assorted “conservatives, and “independents” coming home to NIKKI.Theyve been looking for an excuse for awhile and have now seized on this largely minor issue as their “reason.”
Welcome home Republicans.
Your Governor appreciates your support!
I have never seen the African American monument on the SC state house grounds. This may be because I live a distance from Columbia and it slips my mind to look for it whenever I come to Columbia. I have always wondered at the talent and skill the artisan who crafted it must have had. How did they craft a monument depicting people sitting around and breeding babies for bigger welfare checks, stealing from one another, shooting one another, blocking aisles in grocery stores and ignoring others who wish to travel through the aisle, and whining about why people treat them differently, all on one monument? I need to get the kids together and make a special trip to Columbia so we can all view and appreciate the talent that went into creating this monument. It has to be one of the wonders of the world.
now that is one helluva a nice post. Well done. These are not your grandaddy’s niggers.
Aww! Poor little bigoted twerp who dodged the draft because he had a sore ****.
My ancestors were Native American. I don’t see a monument on the grounds representing my heritage. But then agan, you don’t see my people bitching and moaning about how my great-great-great-great granddaddy that I never knew was mistreated and stolen from, and demanding that the world give me something for free and treat me like a king – (because my ancestors were mistreated). There can’t possibly be very many people alive today who owned a slave or who was a slave, so how are white people supposed to be held accountable for something their ancestors did? That would be equivalent to locking up the parents of every juvenile thug who commits a crime.
And Nikki Haley wants to outsource us to India.
300,000+ State workers and retirees… just looking for a reason to vote for him… and this is his “coming out party?”
It appears the only real choice State employees and retirees have left now is Ervin.
Where does Ervin stand on the flag? He supports state sanctioned gay marriage. Maybe Ervin will propose replacing the Confederate Flag with a rainbow flag on the State House grounds in support of the LGBT community?
I really don’t have a problem with equality (not superiority) for gay citizens or others.
Where does he support same-sex “marriage”?
Been telling you that all along, my friend.
Ervin is the only viable alternative to the incompetent, lying, Haley!
A vote for Ervin is a vote for Sheheen.
“The Confederate flag should be reverently moved to a museum where it will honor the soldiers who fought and died for South Carolina.”
Does anyone really believe them when they say this!?!
who the eff cares? it is embarrassing that so many STILL try to defend this.
who the eff cares?
TBG, for one.
Something that you may not understand. The principal reason behind the South’s secession WAS slavery. Any Neo-Confederate (of which TBG proudly identifies) who tells you different is blowing smoke up your vajayjay.
However…the war was not fought for the good of Humanity or to free the slaves…it was a simple, unnecessary, brutal invasion,. The Southerners were valiantly defending their homeland from the deprivations of Yankees. ITBGSHO, if the South had won…slavery would have been totally done away with well before 1900. In World History the South is often portrayed as a Noble Lost Cause.
“The principal reason behind the South’s secession WAS slavery.”
That might be Kemosabe, but it’s not the reason the North fought the war.
What’s next Vinny, going to all those cemeteries across SC and removing CSA and the unit they were a part of from their tombstones?
My opinion only is that Vinny will have to ask Ervin’s wife first. She was a contributor to Vinny in 2010 and one has too wonder if the two campaigns coordinated this bizzare move by Sheheen today?
yes, because that is totally the same as having the flag on the statehouse grounds.
good grief at the stupid.
Sure you don’t want to change your moniker to Charlie Brown?
Mamatiger92,
You do remember that the original complaint was that the flag shouldn’t fly over the Statehouse dome, right? RIGHT?
The folks that wanted to keep it there compromised capitulated and it no longer flies there. Yet…the folks who wanted it down…still aren’t happy…
FWIW, TBG did not think the flag belonged over the Statehouse.
yes. I remember. doesn’t change the fact that it doesn’t belong there AT ALL.
Neither does a freaking African American monument or half of the other shit that’s on the grounds. Stop bowing down to these special interest groups please! I’m so sick of it, along with all of the politically correct bullshit. A turd is a turd. Recognize.
Removing a symbol of white dominance would be a huge mistake. It’s all we have left to keep ’em in their places.
You do mean the whites in their places right? If they were to protest by stopping working and then their taxes werent available to prop up the whole entitlement system for poor whites and blacks and other races, uh oh!
Sheheen just committed political suicide. Surely he knows how much this racist back water treasures its symbol of slave ownership and bigotry. Folks here would rather drink a pint glass of hydrochloric acid than take that flag down.
They’re niggers here, they’re niggers there; I guess they’re niggers everywhere!
I like it. Good old fashioned unabashed racism like grandpa used to make. Not any of this contortionist, newfangled, grasping, underhanded neo-con racism that exists today.
Nigger is in your face and puts it on front street
“Black on Black violence” or “Welfare kills hope” or “Fatherless homes” are just so….bland.
You can ny use the “N” word if you are black. Otherwise it’s a racist word.
Vincent’s daddy was Speaker of the House. He will rubber stamp anything from the GA and then get his pet projects through. Haley learned to rubber stamp the GA, however, they will not give her anything such is her track record. Both are out of fresh ideas. Haley is out of names to appoint. Ervin is persona non grata in the race. I will have to vote for Vincent simply because of Haley’s lousy administering and skewed loyalties.
“October Surprise””??? Fits said it was possible. The “flag” issue may be it?
Can you imagine ,if it can be proven, that the Sheheen and Ervin campaigns coordinated this desperate strategy of defeating Haley, by turning SC into Ferguson, Missouri for financial and political gain?
Does anybody really believe Ervin is spending millions of dollars for 3% of the vote? What is in it, if anything, for him? What is the payoff, if any?
Why didn’t he just pick Allan Greene as a running mate?
Knew he was a fag.
Good job Vincent; this is a good discussion for the State to have.
Yes indeed.Just like the discussion they are having in Ferguson. Is that what Vinny is hoping for to save his and Ervin’s political asses? Violence and mayhem?
No. I think there is a legitimate discussion to be had. This flag wasn’t put on our State House until 1962. Why was that? For a centennial celebration? Nobody thought 50 years was a good time to honor Civil War heroes? Just happened to coincide with 1962. Context speaks volumes.
And money speaks too. The NCAA ban and other boycotts actually cost this State in lost sales tax revenue and investment. Even if you don’t think the cost of those things is high, there is a cost. And since every taxpayer in this State has to make up for that lost revenue and every business loses that extra bit of income, we are all basically subsidizing the flag’s continued presence. I’m sure there are some things worth doing that for, but surely this isn’t one of them. For a flag that just happened to go up in 1962?
Horseshit.Vinny and Tommy are apparently trying to fuck South Carolina because they can’t fuckin win an election.
That may very well be their rationale for raising the issue, but that doesn’t change the things I pointed out above. If your point is that Sheheen is a self-serving politician who probably only brought this up to score cheap points with Haley, then you’re probably right. But that doesn’t change the fact that the flag needs to, and eventually will, go.
We know, we know, we LOST the confederate war. However it IS an important part of history that should not be glossed over. In fact it should be an inspiration to people that your and my ancestors were stripped of their money, businesses and burned out of their homes, and corn mills (livelihoods in many cases). There was poverty, hard times, and hunger. Less than one generation later in my family’s case, they were back on their feet farming, manufacturing and feeding their families.
On State House grounds: (1) the Confederate Women’s Memorial, which honors the wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters of the era you speak of; (2) the Wade Hampton Monument, which commemorates a South Carolinian who was not only Governor and Senator but also one of the Confederacy’s greatest generals; (3) the Robert E. Lee Tree Memorial, given by the Daughters of the Confederacy; (4) a Jefferson Davis Highway Marker; (5) a Confederate Soldier Monument; (5) Bronze Star Markers commemorating places where the State House was hit by artillery during Sherman’s march; (6) a Robert E. Lee Memorial Highway marker; and (7) a memorial to the State House burned by Sherman’s troops. That’s just on State House grounds. That doesn’t even get to the Hunley, Fort Sumter and the state holiday. Those things honor the memory of the Civil War.
There are currently eight memorials to the Civil War on State House grounds; only one of those is the Confederate Battle Flag. And all anyone is suggesting is taking it and putting it in a museum. That would help the State in a number of tangible ways–and stop forcing people to subsidize something that is economically harmful. So why not?
Is your suggestion really that taking one of eight memorials away degrades the memory of those who lived during the Civil War? If that’s the case, what does the fact that there is just one monument to African Americans say about how we treat the issues of slavery, Jim Crow, and the Civil Rights Movement (the one the flag was meant to protest in 1962)?
Because it won’t stop there. Remove the flag, Jesse Jackson is still not satisfied. Then we will have to remove the Confederate Women’s memorial. Al sharp ton still not satisfied. Then we will have to remove General Ade Hampton and his statuesque horse. NAACP not satisfied. Then we remove….see the pattern here, Jacob. Nothing will ever be enough, until we completely re-write history. It’s happening right now. History books are not the same as they were 20 years ago. Now tell me, how do you change history? You might say that you can’t. But it’s being done everyday. Certain parts are being left out of what our children are being taught in school. So the confederate flag offends some people. Dashikis and the black panther flag offends some people. Just do away with all flags except the US flag. Why do individual states need flags? Lets just keep it going….
Yes. Taking one, two or eight memorials away does degrade the memory of those who lived and DIED during the Civil War. It’s HISTORY. And I don’t know for the life of me why you have brought up the subject of African American monuments! Do you think we need to add some more to honor African American History?
Horseshit.Vinny and Tommy are apparently trying to fuck South Carolina because they can’t fuckin win an election.
Jacob, did you just move here? This issue is has been resolved. Oh and BTW, we’re doing just fine without NCAA endorsements and other boycotts.
No I was born and raised in South Carolina and my family has lived in the State since before the Revolution. And I’m one of the many South Carolinians who are embarrassed by this flag. At best, it represents nothing; at worst it represents the worst things about our State’s history. Those thing are fading away because a lot of younger people are more open-minded and aware of the fact that doing business and being competitive with the rest of the world is better than being stubborn for no reason and fearful of other groups of people.
There are other ways to commemorate Civil War soldiers. The kind of thinking where we shoot ourselves in the foot to prove a point that isn’t worth proving needs to go away. As does the white privilege that’s present in the background of saying the “issue is/has been resolved”.
Your family should be run out of South Carolina. You are spitting on your heritage and land. You’re a traitor to the South.
Can everyone say David Beasley 2.0 ? If Shitheen wasn’t already losing big time he is now. Put the flag back on top of the capital and let those who don’t like it KMA.
Forget the governor’s election.Sheheen has just opened the door for South Carolina to become Ferguson 2.0. The state should be outraged.
Don’t think the DNC is not using the SCDP and Sheheen to lay the groundwork for the 2016 war on middle America. The race hustlers and self identified losers are providing cover.
Remember the Governor’s race of 1998, Beasley lost to Goober Hodges. Beasley took the Confederate flag from atop the State House. Not saying it cost him the election, but that is something an incumbent would do in a second term, not the first term. And Sheehen must be desperate, voicing his desire to remove the flag before the election. Bad move, but he had little hope anyway.
personally, i don’t give a rat’s ass if the flag stays up where it is or not. but to be fair, since the african-american monument was part of the “compromise”, then it should be removed as well. also, while we’re talking about it, if the flag is taken down, then can black “leaders” guarantee that black crime, drug use, etc. will go away since, according to them, all of the black people’s woes in sc are blamed on the flag.

And this dummy wants to be governor? He, absolutely, has not convictions and little common sense.
Tell me if I’m wrong, but aren’t the Sheheens Muslim by heritage? Maybe a couple of generations back. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
lulz….
Lebanese heritage. His grandparents immigrated here.
The worst part is this; it is a crying shame and a national disgrace that Americans are so very ignorant of the truth of the causes of that horrible war. If our education system would simply tell the truth, the Confederate flags would be a source of great pride and honor to all of America. There was not ONE bill in the northern controlled Congress to end slavery in the 1850’s or early to mid 1860’s. They DID pass an amendment to the Constitution to make slavery a permanent part of America, in the House on 02/28/1861 and the Senate on 03/02/1861, AFTER 7 Southern States left the union. Lincoln endorsed it in his first inaugural address. he said he had no objection to the amendment being “made permanent and irrevocable.” Look up the Corwin Amendment. The words are “Congress shall never have the authority to interfere with the institutions in the Sates. Including those institutions holding people to service or labor.” Why in the world would the South prefer to go to war to keep slavery when the northern controlled Congress was handing them slavery forever on a silver platter? 33 States, 22 northern or northern sympathetic, 11 Southern or Southern sympathetic, with the 7 Southern States that had seceded not voting. The northern States could pass any bill they wanted to. They did. An amendment to the Constitution to keep slavery a permanent fixture in America.
The worst casualty of the civil war was the making of “secession” a dirty word in the United States.
Gonna go buy a rebel flag today, eat some sticky ribs and wipe my dirty ass with it when those ribs come out…
The Confederate flag flies appropriately at the Confederate monument in front of South Carolina’s State Capitol. Leave the flag where it is and learn a little Southern history. God bless the South!
your stance is typically gutless Fits. like your sunday morning christianity. covering all bases just in case. don’t want to offend your moron flag waving base but no courage to wave it yourself.
Sadly, like Hodges, Sellers and Shaheen both are in positions where they could, if serious about moving the flag, act on it instead of running for positions were hey haven’t even got a vote (unless the state Senate ties).
Full of sound and fury, signifying naught
November 4th: 60-38-2, Haley/Sheheen/Ervin.
He wants to move it to a “museum to honor the soldiers who fought and died for South Carolina.” After that he can start campaigning to remove the museum that holds the confederate flag.
Sheheen’s another political dunce that is quickly becoming a joke, but I get him to do my bidding!!! Rainbow is back!!!! Mistress needs a new pair of shoes. WE know the boycott did not work. Shuck some corn people, we did not know what a boycott took to run. We were not prepared to drive to another state or the Malt Liquor! After researching, we no know what a boycott is, but I don’t think we can get it to work. Unemployment is too good to give up the free money to accomplish the work towards removing the flag, Watch me waste state funds getting by brothers from states it other than SC to take time off from their work to come protest. But the final results will be great!!! Great I tell you! Great! I get to go home with a bucket load of money and the race division will look good..
Sheheen = SCALAWAG!!!

Only Place this fucker is heading is 6 FEET DOWN! CHEROKEE NATION!
Only Place this fucker is heading is 6 FEET DOWN! CHEROKEE NATION!
Well, let’s just shoot SC tourism in the foot!
I would worry more about Ebola, terrorists, illegal invaders bankrupting taxpayers, militarized “police,” the end of Posse Comitatus (allowing the military to be used domestically), a 20% unemployment rate (low figure), a gazillion dollar debt, a Senate that shills for the White House and has passed or even considered NO legislation coming from the House, the IRS being used against political enemies and literally HUNDREDS of other problems before I would concern myself with the Confederate battle flag.
Don’t focus on NIGGER-on White crime, the sagging economy because of all the illegal SPICS allowed to be in the country taking White people’s jobs, healthcare or unemployment. Focus on an issue that was already decided fourteen years ago. That will get you votes from the NIGGER voting bloc.
Let South Carolina determine her fate. She did before and she will again.
Cultural Marxists will never leave our southern symbols, flags, and monuments standing. That’s because they’re no longer afraid of us.
We must change that. Those opposed to the wearing of animal skins as coats don’t attack motorcycle gangs because they’re frightened of them.
The same must become true among those that attack our southern culture and way of life.
Vincent Sheheen is just looking for some votes. I would’nt vote for the scally wag
The Battle Flag is part of the History of South Carolina
Those who say it is an emblem of hatred are either ignorant or they know the facts but want to cause trouble anyway.
Those who say it is a symbol of hatred because the Klan uses it are hypocrites unless they also want the Stars & Stripes and the Christian cross removed for the same reason.
They can’t have it both ways.
Really???? Does this need to be brought up again. Leave it be and let it go!! its not a racist symbol like people think. Study the history behind the flag, Maybe all you haters will learn something!!!! Then you shall se the true meaning behind it.
Move it back to where it was! Fly it high on top of the State House!
When Ebola takes over the US, when global warming turns Charleston into total pluff mud up to your hips, and everyone is fleeing to the Upstate where it is safer to live, when
ISIS sets off dirty bombs in our cities and takes our woman and children as captives, when the government goes bankrupt funding war after war after war, when gun violence kills the best and brightest in our midst while the NRA stands by and idly plays its fiddle, like Nero, then this flag crap won’t matter anymore. We cannot eliminate our history but we can shape our future with courage and conviction.
We will either solve the problems of this century or we will fail miserably and then the lights will go out for everyone.
Why does the NAACP and their minions GET TO DEFINE A HISTORICAL AMERICAN FLAG?
TELL THE SC LEGISLATURE NOT TO NEGOTIATE WITH THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF CERTAIN PEOPLE.
