… BUT THEN URGES LOCAL GOVERNMENTS NOT TO RAISE TAXES

S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley has signed legislation permitting more than a dozen counties to raise taxes by more than $1.7 billion.

Haley signed the bill into law this week after the S.C. Senate was able to shut down a filibuster mounted by fiscally conservative Upstate Sen. Kevin Bryant (R-Anderson).

In signing the bill, Haley said she hoped local governments would not raise taxes.

“I hope that those affected by this bill will decide not to impose this additional tax,” Haley said in a statement. “A more complex tax code with higher rates is an impediment to a growing economy and works at cross-purposes with our successful efforts to reduce taxes at the state level, which have contributed to the steadily growing economy in our state.”

Huh?

Successful efforts to cut taxes ?” That’s a lie.

Growing economy in our state ?” Also, a lie.

More to the point … if Haley doesn’t want these local governments passing anti-competitive tax hikes, why the hell didn’t she just veto the bill?

Haley’s rationale?  The principle of “home rule.”

“Shouldn’t counties be allowed to set their own tax rates?” one of our libertarian friends wrote to us shortly after reading a piece outlining our original opposition to this tax hike.

Our founding editor’s response?  Fiscally conservative elected officials should “fight tax hikes at every level of government with every tool at (their) disposal.”

After all, fiscally liberal elected officials are fighting to raise taxes with every tool at their  disposal …

So taking your theory to its logical conclusion, you saying a federal government you deemed fiscally conservative enough should simply collect all the taxes that will be collected and disseminate the money to the states as it deem appropriate from a fiscal standpoint?

well that’s pretty close to what we have now … what I propose is starting over. deciding what government should do. then deciding who should pay for what. in the meantime, when opportunities present themselves to cut taxes – or block tax increases – I will always support them.

If the increased power of raising local taxes was combined with a cut in state taxes, then this legislation might be justified.

Sure, why not? Worked great for Kansas, and they just lowered their income tax. Imagine what’ll happen if we completely eliminate ours over the next few years, with nothing to replace the revenue!

Janus is the two-faced god of the Romans, faces front and back. Since, like a teacher with eyes in the back of her head, he could face both directions: statues of his head were used to “guard” public buildings. Nikki, like Janus, can talk out of both sides. Her statement would be the envy of Janus. She seeks to be the master of having it both ways. Sheesh. Let us all worship South Carolina’s Chief Janus!

This is bovine sewage Gov Haley. You and Leatherman (POS-Florence) have shifted money around, cut money from counties, road and bridge projects, cut money to Univesities and spent every last dime in the General Fund only now having to resort to mandating counties to raise the sales tax TO PAY FOR THE OBAMACARE HEALTH INSURANCE INCREASES FOR 400,000 PUBLIC SERVANTS AND EMPLOYEES AND THEIR CHILDREN TO AGE 26!

Raise the state minimum wage to 13.00 dollars an hours so we can pay for this tax increase!

Change the salaried employee rules so we get our base plus half for all overtime.

Raise the corporate tax rate to 10-18% if you are giving them tax cuts on property taxes.

Take away home property taxes for private citizens.

Toal, Leatherman, Haley have ruined the budgets for everyone NOT on the state public employee payroll.

SC is screwed up at every level of trust, political office, and tax rates!
