KATHLEEN SEBELIUS STEPS DOWN AFTER FIVE ROCKY YEARS …

U.S. President Barack Obama’s top health care official resigned her post this week. Kathleen Sebelius – who oversaw the disastrous rollout of Obama’s socialized medicine law – is leaving the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) after five tumultuous years.

“Hold me accountable for the debacle,” Sebelius said last fall in response to questions about Obamacare’s botched rollout. “I’m responsible.”

Guess she got her wish …

Sylvia Mathews Burwell – one of Obama’s top budget officials – will be nominated to take Sebelius’ place.

The former governor of Kansas, Sebelius was a rising star in the Democratic Party in 2008 and was frequently touted as a possible running mate for Obama.

Now? She’s Obamacare’s latest victim …

Sebelius’ resignation comes as health care costs continue to rise. According to a recent Morgan Stanley survey of insurance brokers, the average premium hike for customers who are renewing their plans is 12 percent in the individual group and 11 percent in the small market group.

These hikes come on top of fourth quarter 2013 increases of nine percent in the individual group and six percent in the small market group.

According to Morgan Stanley analysts, the “increases are largely due to changes under the ACA.”

All of this is precisely the opposite of what Obama promised.

“In an Obama administration, we’ll lower premiums by up to $2,500 for a typical family per year,” then-U.S. Senator Obama said during a June 2008 campaign swing through Virginia. “We won’t do all this twenty years from now, or ten years from now. We’ll do it by the end of my first term as President of the United States.”

Really?

At the end of Obama’s first term premiums for the average family with an employer-provided plan had actually increased by $2,400, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Suck on it, Folks. Obamacare is a success with over 10,000,000 now insured. Your frothing at the mouth is now covered even as a pre-existing condition.

“No one will miss the worthless junker plans that pay out jack.”

Is it not obvious that many people do miss their plans that you deem “worthless”? It wasn’t worthless to them, they like having choices even though you don’t.

rebellozit April 11, 2014 at 8:48 am

Lets see. 6.5 million had their plans cancelled. The Chavez Jr.regime is telling us 7.5 million have signed up on the exchanges.20-50% have NOT paid or will stop paying after 3 months. In some states 80% of the sign ups are on Medicaid (FREE).Deductibales are so high now you have to take a loan out before you can even use your insurance.
Only reason anybody signed up was threats of fines and JAIL in the future-kinda like the threats Vladinir Obama Putin is making to Ukraine about natural gas.

The people in the middle of cancer treatment that now have to pay more for their drugs, deductibles, and premiums, people with AIDS got screwed as well, when they could afford their previous insurance and it covered their medical needs, and you call them junk? Junk is the high premiums and unaffordable deductibles of obamacare. Do you not care about those people? Or are you willing to throw them under the bus to defend obama?

I think you are making that up. Please provide examples that are not debunked GOP ads.

Scooter April 14, 2014 at 9:22 pm

They don’t care about deductibles. They would not pay them anyway. This will only drive premiums higher and higher and, probably, higher deductibles.

Sandy Burglar April 11, 2014 at 12:53 pm

How wonderful of you to make that assumption on behalf of millions of people who saw their plans get flushed down the toilet. How the fuck do you know their former plans didn’t meet their needs? Did you talk to them?

Reply
Tom April 11, 2014 at 4:01 pm

How the fuck do you know their former plans did meet their needs? Did you talk to them? All of the people the GOP put up in ads and the Faux News examples have been debunked.

Its sort of like voter id laws. We need them because of fraud, but we can’t find any fraud. So we just assume its out there.

Sandy Burglar April 11, 2014 at 5:35 pm

And that’s the rub, you fucking idiot. The people who had those plans apparently liked those plans or were plans they could afford for themselves and/or their families. They suited their needs and/or income. So who the fuck are you to tell them their plans were “junk”? Who are you? It wasn’t your place nor was it the government’s place to tell people that, at least not in a “free” society. I’m sure all those who had their plans cancelled, premiums skyrocket, coverage limited, lost their doctors, etc., sure do appreciate your fucking concern over their lives.

Scooter April 14, 2014 at 9:24 pm

You can’t argue with a moron.

Mike at the Beach April 10, 2014 at 9:38 pm

Zackly- and even that heavily inflated number doesn’t address the NET difference in overall insureds due to policy losses (it also absolutely disregards the large premium increases already showing up). It’s all good, though. I was reading through some polling a little while ago- the average American doesn’t even know that the ACA and “Obamacare” are the same thing. I don’t think we’re doomed because of Obamacare, I think we’re doomed because we’ve gone stupid.

Mike at the Beach April 10, 2014 at 10:37 pm

Easy, killa. I never said I bought Will’s numbers (not that I necessarily don’t either)…I was just talking about how fucked up ALL of the numbers are because this beast is so ridiculously complex and screwed up (and that Sebelius got shitcanned versus resigning). My position on the numbers is that *nobody* knows them. Team BHO even said that at the presser the other day – they can’t even tell us how many applicants have actually paid, but they did say that they would know within a few months, maybe. Now that’s a well-run program…

SCBlues April 11, 2014 at 8:32 am

What does “Zackly” mean? Of course you said you bought his numbers – it is right there in black and white for everyone to read. And then when confronted with the fact that you bought his numbers based on nothing more than someone slinging some slop out on an internet blog and using ALL CAPS you try to throw up smokescreens. That WAS too easy, killa.

SCBlues April 12, 2014 at 9:14 am

Okay – I’ll play one more time. Brigid is the one who made up a second, unregistered posting name (Sad) to come in to attack me – she is the most hate-filled and vicious poster on this site – go review some of her posts – and she is definitely that pathetic to do something like that. Do you recall “Sad” posting on here previously and why is “Sad” not a registered poster? I see Brigid has thumbed up you on this little spiel – don’t look for one from “Sad” as “Sad” does not exist – but I’m glad you’ve allowed Brigid the satisfaction of knowing her little pathetic charade succeeded – at least with you. I will say that in terms of “silly, angry invective” I’ve certainly been guilty of it – and you might want to even review some of your own posts in that regard. I’m not an angry person at all – many of the things I say in my posts are more tongue-in-cheek than anything else.

I’m sure- it’s always easy to ramble along when you don’t require yourself to make real points. My “Zackly” (which is how all the “cool kids” in my college classes say exactly- that was my homage to Will’s under-30 readers) was to Will’s point that no one (including the White House) can tell us how many of these signups have actually paid. That is just a fact. They admitted themselves that it could be months before *anyone* knows how many actually pay. I simply find that a little odd, that’s all. Either the system is so wacky that there’s no way to tell who’s paid (can you imagine a business operating at that level?) or, they are lying. Either one is a little weird. Deep breaths…

Oh Lord – please help me – I went to my doctor yesterday and he said he could not treat me till I passed muster with the DEATH PANEL – EEEEK!

Tom April 11, 2014 at 1:13 pm

There are no death panels and Obama did not raise taxes on anyone making less than $250,000.00. He was wrong about the plans, although I would guess that is because he did not think anyone would really want to keep the total crap plans that are not permissible under the ACA when they could probably get a plan in the exchange that was better. In fact, no one who had such a plan has really stepped forward and described what plan they had and how much they were paying for it and what they could buy a bronze plan under the ACA for. All of the people the GOP put up in ads turned out to be bogus.

As for keeping doctors, that is no different from any other insurance policy. If doctors are not in contract with your insurer, you have to pay out of network prices. Two years ago, BCBS could not reach an agreement with my doctor and I had to get another doctor or pay out of network prices.

BrigidBernadette April 11, 2014 at 9:33 am

I am really tired of the number of pages issue. There are many many laws with this many pages, and acts with many more regulations. Intelligent people can in fact read and understand laws that must by their nature be complicated. The tea party maybe not so much. But then they don’t really try. They are just against it because Obama is for it, and they love short sound bites.

idcydm April 11, 2014 at 8:24 pm

I don’t care what you are really tired of, they didn’t read the
2,700 pages before they passed it. Got pass it to know what’s in it,
so said Nancy Pelosi, apparently they weren’t “intelligent” or it was
too “complicated” for them. That’s a hell of a way to run a railroad,
unless you are trying to railroad someone.

Smirks April 11, 2014 at 6:43 am

“Policy losses” do not necessarily have to go through the exchanges. For instance, you can “lose” your policy and be offered the same policy but added to for ACA compliance.

Since no official numbers have been released, we can only go on studies for previously uninsured now covered. RAND says 36%, UIHPC says 77%. Another says 53%.

Not sure how I feel about this one. I’m not a fan of Obamacare as I’ve always stated I prefer a single payer system, but it’s better than the GOP plan of hoping the poor and sick die off as quickly and cheaply as possible.
The roll out was a true clusterf**k and it allowed an opening for the GOP and Fox and Limbaugh and all the other windbags to pummel the president and the dems for months and months instead of focusing on its successes and benefits. I suppose it’s good she waited until the enrollment period ended so as not give up her scalp too soon, but why not finish the job and stay on board?

I get where you’re coming from. The pressure on her would have been immense but I doubt it was the administration that literally forced her to step down and by this point she’d weathered the GOP storm pretty well.

Perhaps what happened is that somebody in the white house explained to her how it might be better for everyone at this point if she resigned but that nobody was going to force her hand. From there she made a personal decision to step down.

Reply
Mike at the Beach April 10, 2014 at 9:34 pm

I think you’re closer to it now. I certainly have no personal insight here (BHO doesn’t call me much for advice- OK, never), but that’s not how it works up in that level of the stratosphere. They didn’t want to shitcan her in the middle of the fray, because that smells like defeat. Most folks in the know said all along that as soon as the optics improved juuuuuust enough to dump her, they would do so posthaste. The optics improved a little this week (albeit only because the public is so amazingly ill-informed about this whole issue); when they hit their self-identified, totally arbitrary number that’s not, of course, at all related to the net number of paying insureds OR the net increase/decrease in number of insureds overall, so they dumped her ass. This was no consensus decision or retirement. She got fired, but took one for the team (naturally) to save face on both sides). That’s just how it works. Neither you nor I will ever know for sure, of course, unless you know Sebelius. I do not, so I doubt she’ll be calling me either.

Reply
Limbaughsaphatkhunt April 10, 2014 at 9:44 pm

Couple of things. You seem to have a pulse beat on who and who isn’t informed about the ACA. I suggest you look here: http://www.factcheck.org/2013/09/obamacare-myths/ to see what’s what before continuing that line of attack.

Secondly, I think we’re sort of agreeing…although I don’t think she was fired per se. I think they probably said something akin to…”You know, it might not be a bad idea if you stepped down but you can stay if you’d like”. Sort of like giving the prisoner a loaded gun and walking out of the room for a few seconds.

Mike at the Beach April 10, 2014 at 10:26 pm

OK. Call it what you like, but without the “you can stay if you like” part and we’re tracking! If she had a choice one would think that she would want to see this thing through, no? Why do the shittiest part, then “quit” and let your successor ride in the parade? That’s just not human nature, and you don’t need BHO’s BlackBerry number to be fairly certain of that. Not gonna argue about it with you, though. We’re close enough for gubmint work…

In other words, you do NOT know – yet you’re on here making all sorts of assumptions because Will Folks puts a few things in ALL CAPS and calls her “Obamacare’s latest victim”. Get back to me when you have some factual data to back anything up. I’d rather have a “progressive little heart” than shit for brains.

Mike at the Beach April 11, 2014 at 6:44 pm

Uh, I’m pretty certain that I not only didn’t assert that I had factual data, but even explicitly admitted (in some other posts) that ol’ Barry O. doesn’t call me for advice- ever. I ceratinly didn’t come to my opinion because of Will (not that I disagree with him). It’s just my common sense and working knowledge of the political world. This is just how it’s done. I used to be in the politically-appointed world, and I knew that my elected boss would have to hang me out if the situation warranted; nothing personal, that’s just how that world operates. I knew that going in, so no hard feelings (luckily enough for me I didn’t have to get kicked to the curb, but it certainly could have happened). Only a few peeps will have your “factual data,” and they won’t be calling us or making any honest announcements either, because they are Sebelius, Obama, and maybe a handful of senior advisers. She got shitcanned. Relax, it’s no big deal.

Mike at the Beach April 11, 2014 at 7:23 pm

By the way…U mad bro? You get really riled up and personally insulting over little stuff. I do have a brain, and feelings, too. How do you know that I am not sitting in a bubble bath, drinking white zin, listening to Yanni, and crying my eyes out? OK, I made the part about having feelings up, but you are an excitable thing.

The real damage has yet to come…taxing people who can’t afford insurance is inhuman. I just learned from a vendor of mine, a one women business that does delivery, that the Obamacare subsidies you don’t get until AFTER you have paid upfront for a year.

If that’s the case, this is going to destroy a lot more people as it goes on…not to mention what it’s going to do to what’s left of the healthcare infrastructure….

The fun is just starting.

Btw, if you believe “10 million” have signed up, you are a total rube that deserves to suffer from every government lie that is told.

I have a friend that has tried to enroll in Medicaid in his state.Filled out application months ago on federal website.Didn’t hear anything as the federal government did not have a way to transfer the application. He finally got a call that he needed to go to the STATE benefis site in his state and fill out application and open an account. He did that and still has not been contacted about his eligibility and insurance information. They do say he is covered from the time of the application however he can’t go to doctor as he has no proof he has Medicaid.
My guess is millions are in the same boat and the federal government is counting these people as insured when in reality they have NO access to the insurance.

Da Plane! Da Plane! April 11, 2014 at 10:09 am

That link only compares us to OECD countries, not “all” as Smirks put it.

Regardless, there is a fundamental problem with its base rate of % of GDP calcuation:

http://www.cms.gov/Research-Statistics-Data-and-Systems/Statistics-Trends-and-Reports/NationalHealthExpendData/NationalHealthAccountsHistorical.html

“NHEA measures annual U.S. expenditures for health care goods and services, public health activities, government administration, the net cost of health insurance, and investment related to health care.”

You can’t compare apples to oranges, which is what the above figure of 17.2% does. It does this several ways:

First, it does so comparing “mixed” economies to ones run solely by government-specifically when the US private sector makes an “investment related to health care” it’s treated as a factored cost per person, which is total nonsense. That cost is not carried by the person directly using said services, it’s a ridiculous data point. It’s a sunk cost by the corporation itself and may or may not have an impact on the cost per patient. The US has more infrastructure than all those OECD contries, WAY MORE. That factor alone is a major problem.

Let’s not ignore though the general dysfunction of our government with the factors surrounding “public health activities” and “government administration”. We’ve a 330 million person country, which is being compared to the tiny governments of the OECD countires, it’s absurd. If anything, what you linked suggests that we should push more private, not less.

As I said above I am really tired of the number of pages issue. There are many many laws with this many pages, and acts with many more regulations. Intelligent people can in fact read and understand laws that must by their nature be complicated. The tea party maybe not so much. But then they don’t really try. They are just against it because Obama is for it, and they love short sound bites.

I don’t care what you are really tired of Tom, they didn’t even read the 2,700 pages before they passed it. This old, tired canard is the truth for most legislation. You have to take the marked-up draft to each person.. they are supposed to have read the original draft, and decided on what they like and don’t like… and they “make deals” on each thing they like and dislike… it disappears, and everyone else marks it up.. and bring it back, you look at the changes.. just the changes… and decide if it’s now something you can live with… if so, and everyone else has agreed with the changes they want, it goes up for a vote – to see if there’s anyone left who still disagrees with the final draft – the whole group looks at the final changes.. and if most agree… they vote yes.

Only when most vote yes does the marking up stop.

It’s not some kind of silly process.

idcydm April 12, 2014 at 2:46 pm

Pelosi’s words not mine.

“This old, tired canard is the truth for most legislation.”

There in lies the problem.

Originally I was responding to Smirik’ “No preexisting conditions, no lifetime maximums, millions more insured,”, 23,700 pages is overkill. What about the millions becoming uninsured because of Obamacare, the net gain…ain’t that great.

euwe max April 12, 2014 at 2:58 pm

they didn’t even read the 2,700 pages

23,700 pages is overkill.

——
I don’t know what it takes to spell out national health care. I would imagine there are hundreds of pages of boiler plate to describe conflict of interest, indemnity, limitations of lawsuits, oversight, penalties…etc… not to mention the exact language concerning current policies, conversions… the detail to satisfy doubters…

have you seen the Texas “constitution?”

idcydm April 12, 2014 at 3:18 pm

I don’t know either and neither do the Feds. It wouldn’t have taken much of a law or regulation to tell insurance companies they can not refuse insurance because of preexisting conditions and they must eliminate lifetime maximums. The Feds have been telling the auto industry what they must do for a long time but it’s been piece meal, the same thing should have been done to the health insurance industry.
