Nikki Haley Finally Weighs In On Nullification

Nikki Haley hates Obamacare … except that whole “stopping it” part. She’s not for that …

She also hates Medicaid expansion, telling The Wall Street Journal last November that the Palmetto State “will not expand Medicaid. Ever.”

Um, yeah. About that. Haley’s administration is expanding Medicaid by a whopping 16 percent in the coming fiscal year – which will set South Carolina taxpayer back an additional half-a-billion dollars in the coming year alone.

Last time we checked that’s one of the largest growth rates in America – much larger than the 12 percent Medicaid growth rate of states that are taking Obamacare subsidies for Medicaid.

Anyway … sorry to confuse everyone with facts.

Haley has been silent on the nullification of Obamacare, though … which we suppose makes sense because the bill that’s currently being debate in the S.C. General Assembly doesn’t actually nullify anything.

Haley broke her silence this week, though … kinda …

Oh, Nikki …

Democrats were not amused at the governor’s attempt at humor …

“As usual, when Nikki Haley weighs in on what’s going (in) the legislature – it’s absent leadership and full of petty politics,” a release from the S.C. Democratic Party noted.

Oh come on now … that’s not true. Haley often weighs in substantively (on the wrong side).

“Nikki Haley hates Obamacare”….you can stop right there. She’s re-elected just on that…more than likely…

Nikki Haley only cares what her masters the Koch brothers tell her to care about.

I am, and always have been, a supporter of a single payer system. ACA was not anywhere near what I had hoped for Americans. After all, it was an idea developed in GOP think tanks.
However, it’s better than nothing. In fact, the more it rolls out and the more people getting enrolled, the more they are finding out it’s a lot better than nothing. The scare mongering is starting to wear off and the real benefits are being realized.
In S.C.’s case, we have (once again) cut off our nose to spite our face. In our zeal to give the middle finger to a black, muslim, socialist, Kenyan president we are now on the hook to pay for more medicaid recipients without any additional federal help (our own tax dollars).
If only Halely had followed along with the other early GOP ACA haters (Kaisich in Ohio, Scott in Florida and Brewer in Arizona) and finally relented to common sense…and cents. But no, South Carolina seems compelled, neigh destined, to steadfastly act against its own citizenry at the behest of the Koch brothers and Fox News to make some sort of grand statement a la’ 1861 style. Total buffoonery. Now we’re paying for it…literally.

“I am, and always have been, a supporter of a single payer system. ACA was not anywhere near what I had hoped for Americans.”

Look at it this way, the ACA is such a massive failure that the only way the government can salvage anything is by transitioning to single payer.

Personally, I think single payer would fail just as badly-but coming from your perpective I think you should be more optimistic about its chances as the failure of the ACA widens.

“After all, it was an idea developed in GOP think tanks.”

And that is true! Not that much difference between the GOP and Dems really…it’s just a matter of degrees in philosophy, not actual major differences.

Personally, I think single payer would fail just as badly

Medicare runs reasonably well and with low overhead costs (much lower than the average overhead costs for the private insurance market), and could run better if it had a number of reforms that quite honestly are fought tooth and nail by moneyed interests (Big Pharma is probably the worst culprit). Also, Medicare covers one of the highest risk categories, the elderly, so it is bound to be quite expensive. Single payer covering tons of young(er) people would be relatively cheap to run comparatively.

The US has an advantage in that we don’t have to necessarily cobble together our own version of universal health care from scratch, either. We can look at the various systems that different countries employ and choose to base it off one that would work best for us. We can even improve upon them.

I say at the very least, adopt a system that removes private insurance as the only way to achieve affordable access (or in some cases, access at all).

“Medicare runs reasonably well and with low overhead costs (much lower than the average overhead costs for the private insurance market)”

Well, that depends on who you consult..it’s a polictical football, here’s two sources directly contradicting you:

http://www.heritage.org/research/reports/2009/06/medicare-administrative-costs-are-higher-not-lower-than-for-private-insurance

http://www.forbes.com/sites/aroy/2011/06/30/the-myth-of-medicares-low-administrative-costs/

Now granted, I know most Leftists hate Heritage and hold Huffington Post as God’s word, but that’s my exact point.

You don’t have to listen to anybody. Just look at the facts. When Medicare was enacted 60% of people over the age of 65 and an even higher percentage of disabled people had no health insurance. In those days we had real socialized medicine. County hospitals with charity wards, and crappy care. No specialists, no going to Duke or Mayo for your cancer. Unless you are rich or have insurance your cancer will be treated by the local small town doc and you will most likely die.

Now almost every American over the age of 65 has health insurance and can afford excellent care. The free market does not work when it comes to health insurance. The insurance companies have no desire to insure old sick people because they cannot do so profitably.

There is no reason Medicare could not be expanded as an alternative for everyone. The insurance companies are afraid of the competition.

Smirks March 6, 2014 at 8:57 am

After all, it was an idea developed in GOP think tanks.

Really, it’s the sad truth Republicans deny at every turn. This -is- Republican reform. The very mandate they bitch about was touted by Newt Gingrich and, hilariously enough, the Heritage Foundation. Obamacare itself is a copy of Romneycare, which was an alternative reform that kept health insurance companies around. I mean, the last thing they wanted is a state humoring actual reform like single payer, which Vermont has been.

Granted, I knew Republicans who did not like Romneycare and disagreed with the reforms proposed in the ’90s by Republicans, but Obamacare is, in essence, made up of parts of the Republican counter to Hillarycare and almost a clone of Romneycare.

With no single payer, or even a public option, liberals got very little of what they wanted, but at least SOMETHING was done.

I’m not liberal, but a public option would have been much more palatable than the current Byzantine system that also forces us to buy a private product simply for existing. It’s ironic that the ACA was Obama’s huge political coup, yet he wants to distance himself as much as possible by delaying it’s impact until well after upcoming elections. That tells me quite a bit about its effectiveness.

Right. SC gets $2 for every $1 that they invest in their on state. But, SC isn’t a “taker.”

So you’re criticizing the state for doing exactly what you want? Republicans want to cut government programs, which you fight. Then, when the Republicans can’t cut the programs because you fought them, you criticize the state for taking too much.

SCBlueWoman March 6, 2014 at 12:27 pm

I’m criticizing the hypocrisy of the GOP as a whole and our governor in particular. I’m saying don’t say one thing and do another and claim to be against it. Bless your heart.

Jackie Chiles March 6, 2014 at 12:56 pm

How is the GOP being hypocritical if it tries to cut programs and is thwarted by Democrats?

SCBlueWoman March 6, 2014 at 3:24 pm

Funniest post today. Thanks.

Jackie Chiles March 6, 2014 at 3:41 pm

Answer the question.

SCBlueWoman March 6, 2014 at 3:48 pm

The answer is that the GOP could, yes, could turn down all that federal money or balance the budget without it. But they won’t. Hypocritical period.

Jackie Chiles March 6, 2014 at 4:14 pm

So did you criticize haley for turning down the Medicaid expansion?

SCBlueWoman March 6, 2014 at 4:20 pm

Yes, among many other things that I’ve criticized her for.

Jackie Chiles March 6, 2014 at 4:32 pm

So you criticize the GOP because the state receives too much federal money, then simultaneously criticize the GOP because it wants to cut Federal money. Makes a lot of sense.

SCBlueWoman March 6, 2014 at 4:47 pm

I criticize the hypocrisy of it all. If the GOP wants to cut federal funds, they should and not lie about it. Period. Makes a lot of sense to me.

Jackie Chiles March 6, 2014 at 4:16 pm

Also, how can the GOP turn down federal money that goes directly to poor people that, by and large, don’t vote Republican? You think that the SCGOP has ANY say whatsoever over who receives Section 8 housing or Food Stamps? Do you really think it wouldn’t cut Section 8 and Food Stamps if it had complete say in the matter?

SCBlueWoman March 6, 2014 at 4:18 pm

I thought we didn’t need in stinking federal funds. I thought we need smaller government. What the heck is your point.

Jackie Chiles March 6, 2014 at 4:33 pm

How are you this dense? If the Republicans could cut the amount of federal money the state gets, it would. The recipients of federal money in South Carolina, by and large, are democratic voters- poor people and minorities. SC receives more than other states because it has a higher percentage of both poor people and minorities. There’s not a bunch of GOP voters out there receiving food stamps. Sorry to disappoint.

dwb619 March 6, 2014 at 5:12 pm

Which lobby fights cutting the food stamp program .
The agriculture lobby, not exactly a “liberal” group.

Jackie Chiles March 6, 2014 at 10:58 am

Yeah, because South Carolina cares so much about poor people that it’d never eliminate medicaid and food stamps.
