SON OF ICONIC GOVERNOR STILL MULLING BID
Mike Campbell – son of former S.C. Gov. Carroll Campbell – would be the favorite to win a hypothetical “Republican” primary for lieutenant governor of South Carolina, a poll commissioned by his political consultant Richard Quinn reveals.
According to Quinn’s poll, Campbell – who ran unsuccessfully for this office in 2006 against Andre Bauer – is supported by 28.3 percent of likely primary voters. S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley’s hand-picked candidate, Pat McKinney, received the support of 9 percent of respondents.
Most voters – 60.8 percent – were undecided.
“Mike has a lot of residual name ID from the last time he ran for lieutenant governor, and of course, his last name is iconic in South Carolina, so he’d be a good candidate,” Quinn told Real Clear Politics.
According to Quinn – who would likely run Campbell’s race (if he jumps in) – Campbell is known to more than half of the state’s GOP primary voters (52.5 percent) and is viewed favorably by a six-to-one margin.
Campbell has yet to formally announce his candidacy, but he’s been open about his interest in the race.
Also, it’s clear his candidacy would benefit from the establishment support of outgoing S.C. Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell – who has repeatedly sparred with Haley. McConnell announced earlier this year that he would not be seeking reelection – ostensibly forced out of the race by Haley’s aggressive recruitment of McKinney, a wealthy Lowcountry real estate developer.
McConnell is currently the odds-on favorite to become the next president of the College of Charleston – thanks to a flood of improper legislative pressure.
Whoever wins the GOP nomination for this seat will face S.C. Rep. Bakari Sellers – a fiscal moderate who has actually staked out some positions to the right of the “Republican” establishment.

Yeah right. Haley forced McConnell out. Laugh of the day.
Is Mike Campbell the one who is also known as “Tumpy”? If so, thanks but no fucking thanks. I don’t believe I could constrain myself from puking every time I hear the name “Tumpy” in a news broadcast. Also, the one called “Tumpy” was at one time talking about starting a “reality” TV show. No, that just doesn’t cut it. Also, sick to death of the Goddamn political dynasties already.
I believe thats his brother who is known as
Nope, Mike is his brother and is actually a very nice and personable human being… just a good guy.
Vote for a name. I thought a lot of Mike’s dad Carroll when he was governor. But if my memory serves me Carroll gave Insurance companies a fit and then went to work for them. You can’t trust politicians they talk from both sides of the mouth at once. We need new faces and families running South Carolina and DC.
As I recall, Carroll said something to the general effect of, “make me your Governor and I’ll guarantee you lower insurance rates”. We did and he almost immediately did something (exactly what I don’t recall) which caused our already high auto insurance rates to go even higher. He was just another crooked politician.
Unfortunately most of them(politicians) are. You can go into politics with the best of intentions and they will change you or bridle you where you can not do anything. Term limits are the only answer. I tried it once on a small level and left after one term.
God bless you, Elfego! You sound like exactly the kind of people we need running for office. Unfortunately, like most other honest folk, I’d bet you don’t have near enough money to successfully clash with your opponents. If the world were populated with a majority of thinking people, the amount of money wouldn’t matter. The voters would look at who you are and what you really stand for, rather than bullshit ads which paint the picture the politician wants to portray of themselves, such as the ones Lindsey is currently running.
Thank you but I am to old and did not have the stomach for it 10 years ago. I honestly feel term limits are the only answer. With power goes corruption and I have seen it many times. God Bless!
That’s not true. What he did was require that the BILL reflect the amount that was included to cover ‘at risk’ drivers. You had always been paying it, but now it was shown separately on your bill. Recoupment fee I believe it was called. It took time but we no longer have the highest rates in the SE.
Campbell was the last good Governor we’ve had.
No, Corruption was correct.
Campbell said several times that he would lower our car insurance rates, then signed the recoupment fee into law, which in effect doubled our car insurance through loopholes of where the money was spent. As soon as he retired, he went to work as an insurance lobbyist. Contradiction? You be the judge.
Then there are his wasteful education reforms known as “the governors package (lol)”. They went into affect when I was in middle school..and 30 plus years later we still have the lowest SAT scores in the nation. His fault? Hardly, but he was ineffective at improving them, or our schools.
Many people credit him for pulling SC out of the doomed textile business and “modernizing” SC’s workforce. By giving away the state with tax incentives (BMW, Western Star), he certainly increased the manufacturing base…but at what cost?
He fought against AUTO insurance companies, and went to work for the LIFE insurance lobby. He never had a beef with the Insurance industry outside of the Auto branch as Gov.
Good ol’ South Carolina, where you can gain political office just because of having a certain last name. So what is “Tumpy’s” political experience? I bet “Tumpy” is about as ignorant as his old man was the day before he bought the farm..
Carroll Campbell was the best “gubernor” this state has ever had by far. Trumpy on the other hand can’t be too bright, he owed the state elections commission $380,000 in fees and fines for failing to report his campaign finances in a timely fashion. I think the total owed was more than he actually spent on the campaign.
“Carroll Campbell was the best “gubernor” this state has ever had by far.”
Not to difficult considering how low the bar is set.
Tumpy is Mike’s brothers.
Thanks for the clarification!
Ukraine Situation Further Confused After Appearance by John Travolta
KIEV (The Borowitz Report) — A surprise appearance by the actor John Travolta today in Kiev’s Independence Square has further confused the situation in Ukraine, witnesses on the ground report.
According to several accounts, Mr. Travolta flew to Ukraine in his self-piloted private jet in the hopes of raising morale in the embattled country, but only served to perplex Ukrainians with a brief but indecipherable speech.
In his remarks, Mr. Travolta referred to Ukraine as “Cranium” and Crimea as “IKEA” before hopping back into his cockpit and flying away.
The speech rattled the nerves of the Ukrainians who heard it, according to reports. In the words of one witness: “We are no longer sure what country we are living in.”
Once again, if his name was Mike Mitchell, he wouldn’t even be in the conversation.
Yeah, nothing to the guy, just riding on his old mans name.As to this”poll?”60% undecided makes it meaningless.
Bauer beats both of them if he would run.
Campbell or McKinney? No thanks. Campbell is an idiot and McKinney is a Haley.
Truth is a hard thing to dispute!
I’m sick of dynasty wannabes.
Can’t he go directly to work as an insurance industry lobbyist and leave us alone?
Mike Campbell may be a nice guy–but what qualifications does he have to be Lt. Governor? No way would I vote for this hanger-on. I don’t blame him for what his Dad didn’t/did do. The question is what has Mike done. NOTHING! Most of all I don’t believe a damn thing those fat Quinns have to say.
