The Midlands STEM Institute Board of Directors has chosen the site upon which it will build a new public charter school in Fairfield County.

The board voted on Sept. 17 to renovate a former residential care facility on Greenbrier Mossydale Road outside Winnsboro. The 18.2-acre site features a brick building with courtyards, a playground area, and ample room for expansion.

Board chairman Kevin Thomas said the Board of Directors considered several sites that offered a variety of advantages, but none as well suited for MSI’s purposes as the site on Greenbrier Mossydale Road.

“This location is perfect for the institute,” he said. “It is centrally located to the students we are hoping to serve and grants a lot of flexibility for developing a first-class learning environment that teachers will want to teach in and where parents will want to send their children.”

Plans call for MSI to offer a wireless environment featuring the latest technology as students pursue an education enriched by a curriculum heavy in science, engineering, and mathematics. Non-traditional classrooms will allow students to learn in a collaborate environment that will encourage experiments and hands-on experiences.

The board also announced that it will launch a $3,500,000 capital campaign this fall to offset the costs of construction. Several donors already have pledged support for the institute and there are numerous naming opportunities available for interested groups, businesses, or individuals.

The new charter school, which was approved this summer by the S.C. Charter School Advisory Committee and the SC Public Charter School District Board of Trustees, will open in Fall 2014.

Public charter schools are a fair way for public education to innovate. Unlike private schools, everyone has an opportunity to attend based on their ability. Charleston County’s Academic Magnet High School was ranked the 10th best high school in the nation this year by US News and World Reports.

CCSD’s Academic Magnet High School is not a charter school–there are charter schools within CCSD, but AMHS is not one of them. It’s an amazing facility and the turnaround there within the public school district is truly remarkable, however.
