S.C. Sen. Katrina Shealy (R-Lexington) was the recipient of several awards from the S.C. Federation of Republican Women (SCFRW) last weekend – including an award the group often presents to male elected officials.

Shealy – who ousted incumbent RINO Jakie Knotts running as a petition candidate last year – received the SCFRW’s “Woman of the Year” award at a conference on Folly Beach, S.C.. But she also received the group’s “Strom Thurmond Award for Excellence in Government and Public Service,” which regularly goes to male recipients.

Not bad …

The freshman lawmaker has impressed us during her first few months in Columbia – and she impressed us in her response to winning these awards.

“I’m grateful for the recognition and I look forward to working with my friends in this organization to make our state more competitive,” Shealy said in a statement. “I hope we’ll work hard this coming session to get an income tax relief bill passed – one that keeps us from losing any more ground to North Carolina on that front. I also hope we’ll work hard together on universal choice for parents as well as overdue structural and ethical reforms. And of course we’ve got to toughen CDV penalties as well because our national ranking on that front is totally unacceptable.”

“There’s a lot of work to be done in this state, and we don’t have the luxury of sitting back and waiting any longer,” Shealy added.

Very nice … most Palmetto politicians dispense meaningless platitudes upon being presented with a meaningless plaque (or in Shealy’s case, two meaningless plaques). Props to Shealy for keeping it substantive – and getting the substance right. Let’s hope she is successful in pushing her agenda at the S.C. State House this year.

She is following the Nikki Haley model which is to have your associates beg, borrow, and if needed, steal these awards.

The hope is that no one will notice that they don’t actually do anything.

Cher – The first sign of jealousy is an insult! I don’t think she has to beg, borrow or steal a thing.

Ms Shealy would have been an improvement just by not being Jake Knotts. I had some fears that she was going to be a Haley ally and hanger-on, based on criticisms and comments by her opponents. Thus far, Ms Shealy has not been a disappointment to me at all. She has worked sincerely for pro-gun legislation.

She appears to be for the working man or woman and for maintaining and renewing our rights which have been taken from us by “the system” over many decades.

If she keeps up as she has been doing, she will definitely get my vote again on the next go-round.
