Taxpayer-Funded Looting

You down with EBT? (“Yeah you know me”).

For those of you who work for a living, those three letters probably don’t mean anything. Perhaps you’ve seen “EBT accepted” signs outside your local Qwikie Marts … and wondered what that meant.

EBT stands for “Electronic Benefit Transfer” – and it’s the government’s preferred method of dispensing food stamp payments to dependents. And there are millions of dependents – none of whom are missing a meal during the so-called “government shutdown.”

Anyway, on Saturday night, the government’s vendor for EBT – Xerox – experienced a power outage during a “routine backup,” one that momentarily knocked the entire system offline. When EBT came back online, the purchase limits associated with these cards had been removed in some locations.

What happened next? According to television station KSLA, mass government-subsidized looting …

From 7 to 9 p.m., people were loading up their carts, but when the cards began showing limits again around 9, one woman was detained because she rang up a bill of $700.00 and only had .49 on her card. She was held by police until corporate Walmart said they wouldn’t press charges if she left the food.

Lynd says at 9 p.m., when the cards came back online and it was announced over the loud speaker, people just left their carts full of food in the aisles and left.

Classy, huh?

Here’s an image KSLA obtained from social media of the aftermath …

Sing it with us, people …

“O beautiful for glory-tale  … of liberating strife. When once and twice … for man’s avail … men lavished precious life!  America! America! God shed his grace on thee. Till selfish gain no longer stain … the banner of the free!”

Amen to that …

Glad you enjoyed it Frank. It’s obvious that you don’t pay anything in taxes so the joke is on the rest of us. Some day if you ever grow up and get a real job that pays anything you will find out just how unfunny it is when people such as yourself take advantage of the system that should be “helping” people not allowing thieves to steal with impunity.

Xerox didn’t tell anyone to come get unlimited free food. The store said come and get it no limits. Did you see the article?

http://www.ksla.com/story/23679489/walmart-shelves-in-springhill-mansfield-cleared-in-ebt-glitch

4th Paragraph “…and they called corporate Walmart, whose spokesman said to let the people use the cards anyway. From 7 to 9 p.m., people were loading up their carts,…” Stuffmart screwed up. I thought you hated corporate cronyism Snarks. Crap.

Now I’m even further suspect. Do you read the articles or watch the video’s? I honestly didn’t peg you for a HufPo agent. Hmmm…

Personally, I think that those who used their cards should have the amount taken from their EBT future benefits. They knew what they were doing and took advantage of the situation.

It is a shame, that in a country as rich as ours, that the greedy evil Republicans see fit to LIMIT the amount of FOOD that can be PURCHASED using an EBT card!!!

While not excusing the actions of these unfortunate members of our society, TBG hopes that this opens some eyes to their plight.

Wake up America!

Why not just put a credit on those cards? If they have a balance of .49 and they charge $700, they just go without benefits for the next two or three months until there’s a positive balance on the card.

I never understood why they don’t call it the “Electronic Wealth Transfer” card.

EBT vs. EWT

I guess it’s a marketing thing.

On a happier note, imagine if the dollar collapsed or hyper inflated and people were scrambling to spend them before they were no longer useful. EWT mess x 9 specifically.

Fact is, many who DO work for a living are on this program as well — especially in SC were a decent wage is hard to find. A fact too often ignored.

If poor people would stop having kids, there would be a hell of a lot fewer poor people. Why should those on food stamps be allowed to have more kids while still on the program. Am I being unfair?

C’mon, bro! We know that (although I would argue that “many” is a tad strong; “some,” perhaps). I think you also know that the VAST majority of folks on what the unwashed masses generally refer to as “welfare” are lazy-ass substance abusers gaming the system. Wait! Before the howling starts, note that I said, “most,” not, “all.” By “most” I mean, most. More than 50%. A simple majority. Don’t send me the anecdotal tales of your cousin Bobby who caught a bad break, or your hard-working Mummy who slaved washing clothes for $6/day to put you through Princeton (both saved by their EBT card). In a past life I dealt with the fraud and abuse within these systems on a daily basis, and it would make even the most charitable soul turn purple if the MSM would ever popularize the tales. SSI, WC Disability, EBT, unemployment benefits, you name it. Even veterans are getting in on it now. A “friend” of mine emailed me the other day to brag about his recently-awarded PTSD VA disability rating from the Vietnam War. He wrote, “Didn’t your unit fight somewhere in the 80’s? Call me up and I’ll let you know how to get in on this!” Something is happening to our culture and our people. This story on the vanishing EBT limit looting is just one symptom. Shame is a thing of the past, I think. Don’t ask me how to fix it, or if it can even be fixed at this point. if I knew I’d write a book, but it’s real.

By the way, I have to channel the late, great philosopher Sam Kinison (link below) for a moment in response to your “…especially in SC where a decent wage is hard to find” comment. Live where the decent jobs are!!! I’ve done it a few times, and it’s pretty easy.

You are right and the “fix” is to get rid of the programs. Churches have food banks and there is other help out there for those that “need” it. In the past families would take care of each other but with so damn much government assistance everyone just figures “let the government take care of them”, but there just isn’t enough money. We can’t even print enough money. You can’t spend$100 just to get some needy person $10. We are broke (financially) and getting broker.

Saw a sign at a gas station that they accepted EBT and EBT cash (something or other). Apparently these cards can be used as cash like an ATM card, for gas or stuff other than food (maybe beer?).

LMAO Tonto, controls need to be implemented in every area of government-you shouldn’t blame a political party. The government is fleeced on a regular basis be it Medicare and Medicaid fraud or military spending. Even 2 sisters were charged for fraud in a military supply situation, where $800,000 was charged for a very cheap part and sent to Iraq-the majority of the cost was supposedly air freight. Why not fix the error and not have bookkeeping headaches over 2 or 3 months?

The two WalMart locations in Louisiana made the decision to allow customers to purchase using EBT cards during the time the EBT system was down. Other WalMart locations in other states faced the same situation but did not accept EBT and instead put up signs notifying customers that the system was down. The two Louisiana WalMart locations are going to take it on the chin.
